Western Bulldogs SuperCoach Season Review by bkw77
2012 was a pretty ordinary year for the Doggies – only 5 wins and 11 straight losses to finish of the season says it all.
Below you’ll find a quick summary of the good (but not great) players of 2012 and the ones to watch out for next year.
The Good
Matthew Boyd

,
2012: finishing price $ 550,100, Average 113

,
2013 likely starting price = $601K

,
2013 estimated SC average = 100-115

,
Likely position / role: Midfield

The Doggies ever reliable captain had a good year (easily the best player in a poor team) and fantasy wise was just below last season’s output of 116 points per game. Boyd played every game and finished the year strongly averaging 120 over the last five games ensuring he was pretty valuable during the SuperCoach finals. As always Boyd was solid as a rock with only one score under 80 and 16 scores over 100, with a high score of 141 against the Hawks in round 16. Plays every week and gives his all.
Ryan Griffen

,
2012: finishing price $ 553,700, Average 106

,
2013 likely starting price = $563K

,
2013 estimated SC average = 100-115

,
Likely position / role: Midfield

Griff’s year was on par with last year, averaging 106 with a high score of 170 vs. the Swans in round 21 – not a bad effort considering he was tagged almost every week. Griffen has the potential to improve further however I can’t see it happening until he has better outside players around him that can share the tag. Griff is one of my favourite players although he is still too inconsistent for fantasy in my opinion. His numbers were almost identical to 2011 - In 2012 he scored under 80 six times and over 120 five times, compared with 2011 where he scored under 80 four times and over 120 five times. Good, but not quite elite.
Best Cash Cow
Tory Dickson

,
2012: finishing price $349,800, Average 70 points

,
2013 likely starting price = $371K

,
2013 estimated SC average = 70-80

,
Likely position / role: Half Forward or Forward Pocket

A solid first year for Tory – he started slow then played some solid football from round 7 through to 21 averaging 80 points per game over that period. Tory bombed badly in the final two rounds though and proved he should have been cashed in prior to the finals. I can’t see him improving his scores much further.
Fantasy relevant players to watch in 2013
Luke Dahlhaus

,
2012: finishing price $377,900, Average 83.88 points

,
2013 likely starting price = $445K

,
2013 estimated SC average = 90-100

,
Likely position / role: Half Forward rotating into Mid

The dreadlocked one played 17 quality games before being struck down by injury late in the year. Dahlhaus uses the ball well, wins his own ball, kicks goals and is a tackling machine – all aspects that point to him as a future gun in Supercoach. Luke has been handed Brad Johnson’s #6 for next season and is expected to push into the midfield, where he should average in the 90’s and looks a good option at F6 or F7. I have a sneaking suspicion 2014 will be his true breakout year, however I will still consider him for my opening squad!
Mitch Wallis

,
2012: finishing price $ 414,500, Average 87

,
2013 likely starting price = $463K

,
2013 estimated SC average = 95-105

,
Likely position / role: Midfield

Mitch played 19 games in 2012 averaging 22 disposals and 87 SuperCoach points per game, well up on his efforts of 6 games and 54 point average in his debut season. Wallis was an absolute ball magnet as a junior and this started to show in 2012. Wallis scored over 80 in 14 of his games in 2013, and cracked the tonne on 7 occasions – other than two dud games he was very consistent. He should push towards and possibly over a 100 point average in 2013 with ample opportunities in the Doggies midfield.
Jason Tutt

,
2012: finishing price $252,400, Average 36

,
2013 likely starting price = $174K

,
2013 estimated SC average = 60-80

,
Likely position / role: Back Flank or Wing

Tutt started the year late due to injury and only played the 5 games for the year from round 15-19.
Tutt was drafted (along with Christian Howard) with the long term view of replacing Lindsay Gilbee, so with Gilbee and Hargrave retiring there should be plenty of opportunity for him to cement a spot of the half back flank. Kicked 3 goals with his first 3 kicks in the AFL against Port Adelaide and has a bit of run and carry about his game, something the dogs desperately need. He averaged 85 in his first 3 AFL games so don’t let his 36 average from this year scare you away.
2013 will be his third year in the league so I expect solid improvement. Track his pre-season form.
Dale Morris

,
2012: Did not play, broken leg

,
2013 likely starting price = $241K

,
2013 estimated SC average = 60-70

,
Likely position / role: Back Pocket

The Doggies most reliable defender, Morris missed the entire 2012 season with a leg injury and looms as a half decent cash cow option for 2013. His estimated starting price seems a bit on the high scale – normally I wouldn’t go near him for fantasy however if he is under $150K and fit at the start of the year I’d consider him as a cash cow option. Morris averaged 70 SuperCoach points in 2010 and 74 in 2011 so he presents a solid, but risky, option. If fit he’ll play every week.
