As always with the new guys, constructive criticism is a good thing, but dont be too harsh - were all blundering through this together for the betterment of us all.
Sydney vs GWS
[span style="font-weight:bold">Sydney
Green Vest: Harry Cunningham
Red Vest: Luke Parker
When did Parker get the Vest? Mid-way through the 3rd qtr
Why? Cunningham is an elevated rookie from the Swans, I think he was chosen as the sub because he can play in the midfield or up forward and sneak a few in! Parker received a hard hip and shoulder from James McDonald in the first quarter has a hair line fracture in his Jaw but played on. He was subbed out in the third quarter because of the pain.
[span style="font-weight:bold">
GWS
Green Vest: Dom Tyson
Red Vest: Dylan Shiel
When did Shiel get the vest? Mid-way through the 3rd qtr
Why? Tyson is, like most other Giants a first gamer. And probably was very unlucky to get the vest. I guess Sheedy just saw him as someone who could come on and influence the game late. Shiel was taken off because he wasn’t playing as effectively as most of the other Giants, due to his limited preseason, also Tyson and Shiel both being midfielder’s made it a suitable substitution.
Carlton VS Richmond
[span style="font-weight:bold">Carlton:
Green Vest: Kane Lucas
Red Vest: Jordan Russell
When did Russell get the vest? Early in the 4th
quarter
Why? Kane Lucas was chosen as the starting sub, I’m assuming because of his zippy speed and also being the youngest player that played for them on Friday night. Jordan Russell was subbed off as he wasn’t getting much of the ball and was statiscally playing the least effective for the Blues.
[span style="font-weight:bold">Richmond:
Green Vest: Reece Conca
Red Vest: Shane Tuck
When did Tuck get the vest? Mid-way through the 3rd
quarter
Why? I believe Conca was given the green vest because he is a utility, who can play off half back, in the midfield or I’m sure even up forward. This is a fantastic asset for a sub. Tuck was given the red vest as he is the oldest for the tigers and is injury prone, so they were easing him into the season.
Collingwood vs Hawthorn
[span style="font-weight:bold">Collingwood:
Green Vest: Paul Seedsman
Red Vest: Peter Yagmoor
When? Yagmoor was taken off late in the 3rd.
Why? Seedsman was chosen as the starting sub being his first game and having a much lighter frame then the rest of the team. Yagmoor was subbed off because he was playing quite poor with his only stat being 2 tackles.
[span style="font-weight:bold">Hawthorn:
Green Vest: Jack Gunston
Red Vest: Jarryd Boumon
When? Late in the third quarter
Why? Gunston was chosen as sub because he is one of those players who can come on and bag a few goals quick, and that’s what the hawks needed. At the time the Hawks thought that to win, they needed to outscore, not out defend, so the first game defender Jarryd Boumon was off later in 3rd.
Melbourne VS Brisbane
[span style="font-weight:bold">Melbourne
Green Vest: Matt Bate
Red Vest: Sam Blease
When? 3 qtr time
Why? Matt Bate is another good utility, Neeld seems to want to give him midfield time, and he can play forward as well. But with everyone hyping him up saying he is in for a breakout year, he shouldn’t have been the sub, I guess he mustn’t be as fit as he needs to be Sam Blease was subbed off because he just wasn’t playing very well, with 5 possessions at 20% efficiency at 3 qtr time.
[span style="font-weight:bold">Brisbane
Green Vest: Sam Sheldon
Red Vest: Rohan Bewick
When? 3 qtr time
Why? It was time to make a change, get some fresh legs in and run the game out. Sam Sheldon was the sub for this exact reason, to be able to come in late and use his speed to run over the top of his opponents. Bewick was subbed off because he was just running out of legs, he is young and first game back is always going to be tough.
Geelong vs Fremantle
[span style="font-weight:bold">Fremantle
Green Vest: Michael Barlow
Red Vest: Clancee Pearce
When? Mid-way through the third term
Why? Barlow was given the green vest as he has had an extremely limited preseason and they want to ease him into the season. Pearce was having a poor game for his own standards and the teams. He also plays the same position as Barlow so it was a suitable substitution.
[span style="font-weight:bold">Geelong
Green Vest: Allen Christensen
Red Vest: Orren Stephenson
When? Late in the third qtr
Why? Geelong substituted Orren Stephenson after a disappointing debut, where he was monstered by man-mountain Aaron Sandilands. Christensen was put as the sub because of his zippy speed, in a close game when everyone is starting to tire, he could have won the game for the cats.
Essendon vs North Melbourne
[span style="font-weight:bold">Essendon
Green Vest: Nathan Lovett-Murray
Red Vest: Heath Hocking
When? Late in the 1st quarter although he was off the field within the first 30 seconds.
Why? Heath Hocking was concussed in the first 30 seconds. The medical staff did some tests and deemed him unable to play. Essendon, unlike most other teams chose an experienced player as their sub, Lovett-Murray. I think he was chosen as he has good run through his legs and they were hoping to use that to effect late in the game.
[span style="font-weight:bold">North Melbourne
Green Vest: Matthew Cambell
Red Vest: Robbie Tarrent
When? Early in the third term
Why? Tarrant limped off the ground early in the third quarter, and was subbed off a minute later, Cambell was selected as sub as he is a goal sneak who can win the game off his own boot, but was unable to this time.
West Coast vs Bulldogs
[span style="font-weight:bold">West Coast
Green Vest: Andrew Embley
Red Vest: Daniel Kerr
When? 3 qtr time
Why? Kerr was being very effectively tagged out of the game by Liam Picken and it was time for a change. Embley was chosen as the sub, one of the eagles star players, surely they wouldn’t do this without a good reason, he must have had a limited pre-season or maybe he just isn’t fit enough. But he came on and got 12 disposals in the final term in an extremely effective substitution.
[span style="font-weight:bold">Bulldogs
Green Vest: Jarrad Grant
Red Vest: Clay Smith
When? Mid-way through the third
hy? Like most other subs, the Bulldogs went for a speedy player, Jarrad Grant. If the game was tight he could have come on and won it on his own boot. Clay Smith was killing the eagles with 4 goals straight and a might 102 supercoach points! Imagine if he was on for the full game… He mustn’t, like most other first year players, be fit enough to run a full game out.
Port Adelaide vs St Kilda
[span style="font-weight:bold">Saints
Green Vest: Farren Ray
Red Vest: Jamie Cripps
When? Late in the third quarter
Why? Farren Ray was a late change for the saints replacing Tom Ledger who has general soreness before round 1… not a good sign. I think ray was chosen as the sub because he has the ability to be a ball magnet but was unable to do so finishing the game off with just 2 disposals and 1 Supercoach point… Cripps was subbed off because he was the youngest on the field for the saints and wanted to ease him in to the year.
[span style="font-weight:bold">Port Adelaide
Green Vest: David Rodan
Red Vest: Jarrad Redden
When? Late in the third quarter
Why? When it gets later in the game you can still do well with one ruckman. So Redden was the unlucky one being subbed off in his first game. Now to Rodan, in my opinion, if you could pick the ideal sub it would be him. His speed and agility is amazing and so is his disposal. He came on to great effect picking up 11 possessions.
So hope you enjoyed the read and think this will be a help as the season moves forward.
