Welcome to the round 2 review of SuperCoach SuperSubs. As I mentioned last week this article is here to not just provide a review of the week’s sub’s, why they were the sub. But to provide you with information on what type of player a particular coach subs on/off. This will be useful later on throughout the season. The advantage of all this for your team is when selecting who to put on the field, you may have an idea which has a higher chance of being the sub. So head over the break for the week’s review!

Brisbane vs Carlton
Brisbane
Green Vest: Jesse O’Brien
Red Vest: Ben Hudson
When? Late in the third quarter
Why? A popular substitution at the moment seems to be subbing out a ruckman and in a runner, coming off a 5 day break late in the game it was going to be super hard for them to run out the game and that is why the sub was made. O’Brien was chosen as sub as it was his first game of the year and to be able to come in late and hopefully dominate but he was unable to do so wish just 2 possessions and 9 SC points.
Carlton
Green Vest: Jordan Russell
Red Vest: Jeremy Laidler
When? Early in the 4th.
Why? The game was well won by now. Laidler has had previous injury’s so they rather be safe than sorry! Russell was chosen as the sub, as he can play back, mid of fwd. A typical utility. He came on to very little effect though having just the 4 disposals.
Essendon vs Port Adelaide
Essendon
Green Vest: Sam Lonergan
Red Vest: David Hille
When? Mid-way through the first term
Why? Hille strained his calf and was subbed off very soon after, Essendon really do have terrible luck with the sub. This was Lonergan’s chance to take his spot in the team and Hille’s injury gave him a chance to get some of the ball, but he was unable to take it grabbing 8 possessions, 4 tackles and 48 SC points.
Port Adelaide
Green Vest: Cameron O’Shea
Red Vest: Chad Wingard
When? Half Time
Why? Wingard had numerous hits to his head but the last one did the job, splitting just below his eye open and they stuck an eye patch looking thing on it! He was subbed off for Cameron O’Shea, it was O’Shea’s 20th game so he has enough experience to do some damage with his 197cm frame. It’s not often that you see a big man put as the sub.
Fremantle vs Sydney
Fremantle
Green Vest: Michael Barlow
Red Vest: Josh Mellington
When? Late in the second quarter
Why? Sydney has a 40 point buffer, and were dominating Fremantle in the middle, Barlow was chosen as the sub because he still is recovering from his pre-season injuries and also like last week, he could come on late and potentially win the game for the team. But this week he was needed to keep the team in range. Lyon took a risk in using the sub so early, which could have backfired but worked exceptionally. Mellington was given the vest probably unluckily, but it needed to be done as he wasn’t having a great effect on the game.
Sydney
Green Vest: Dan Hannenberry
Red Vest: Ryan O’Keefe
When? Mid-way through third quarter
Why? ROK was having a disgraceful game by his standards, with just 2 possessions and 21 SC points. So he was subbed off for Hannenberry, who was put as sub because he has raw talent, he has played 54 games now, at 21 he is ready to make a step up and he did coming on and grabbing 12 quick possessions and 54 SC points.
West Coast vs Melbourne
West Coast
Green Vest: Ashton Hams
Red Vest: Andrew Embley
When? Late in 1st quarter
Why? Embley came from the ground early in the 1st, with a shoulder injury and was unable to play on, so Hams came on. I think they put Hams as the sub as he is a zippy player, at 175cm he can crumb a goal in the forward line or rove the ruckman to perfection. He finished up with 10 disposals and 60 SC points.
Melbourne
Green Vest: Matt Bate
Red Vest: Jamie Bennell
When? Late in the third qtr
Why? Well you certainly wouldn’t want to have Bate in your team, for the second week in a row he was given the green vest. As I mentioned last week, Bate is a good utility for the Dees, as he usually plays up forward, but Neeld looks to want to play him in the middle. Jamie Bennell was subbed out with just the 3 possessions and 18 SC points.
Collingwood vs Richmond
Collingwood
Green Vest: Paul Seedsman
Red Vest: Chris Tarrant
When? Quarter time
Why? Tarrant who went off with a strained calf mid-way through the first term donned the red vest at quarter time. Seedsman was chosen as the sub for the second week in a row, I guess Bucks was happy with how he did last week. Seedsman is also just 72 kilos and the lightest on the Collingwood list. So until he puts some weight on maybe he won’t get much game time.
Richmond
Green Vest: Robin Nahas
Red Vest: Jake King
When? Mid-way through the 3rd quarter
Why? Jake King coming back from his suspension, came off with a knee injury. He was subbed out not long after. Nahas was chosen as the sub as last year he proved himself as a speedy ball magnet. He could use his pace and run through the pies when they got tired but was unable to do so as the pies were too strong.
Adelaide vs Bulldogs
Adelaide
Green Vest: Tom Lynch
Red Vest: Richard Douglas
When? Late in the 1st quarter
Why? Adelaide was forced to sub out Richard Douglas with a hamstring injury early in the game. Tom Lynch was the man to replace him and he did so to great effect racking up 2 goals 11 marks and 17 possessions but just the 75 SC! Unusual Kermit as he is usually, correct me if I’m wrong, a key forward.
Bulldogs
Green Vest: Tory Dickson
Red Vest: Clay Smith
When? Early in the 4th quarter
Why? Smith disappointed thousands of Fantasy coaches as he went from hero to zero, 102 SC points at 3 quarter time last week, to 27 this week. Unlucky if you had him on the field! Dickson is a 182cm forward who loves a goal. Dogs put him sub so he could sneak a few late goals to win them the match but was unable to do so.
North Melbourne vs GWS
North Melbourne
Green Vest: Aaron Mullett
Red Vest: Lindsay Thomas
When? Half time
Why? Lindsay Thomas was subbed out at half time because of a sore AC joint which is not good news for north fans and if your one of the 5,789 supercoachers who have selected him it’s not good news for you either. Mullett was selected as the sub as he is just 73 kilos. Interesting fact is last week’s sub was Matt Cambell, he weighs 72kg. They are the two lightest on the list.
GWS
Green Vest: Dom Tyson
Red Vest: Nathan Wilson
When? Late in the third
Why? Wilson was just playing like a sack or patatoes. 4 possesions at 50% effeciency. Tyson was chosen as sub for the second week in a row which is intresting, because he is fully fit I beleive. So maybe we have a Perma sub.. ? For the moment at least. Will be watching closely this week coming.
Saints vs Suns
Saints
Green Vest: Tom Ledger
Red Vest: Stephen Milne
When? Late in the third term
Why? Well Tom Ledger you buggered me big time. Coming back from ‘general soreness’ Scotty Waters thought it would be good to ease ledger back in. Putting him on late in the third quarter he picked up 8 possessions and 17 SC points. Milne was subbed off much to his disgust, he had 2 goals 2 from 10 disposals so not a bad performance. The game had been won and Waters wanted to blood some young and Milne was the unlucky one.
Gold Coast
Green Vest: Trent Mckenzie
Red Vest: Aaron Hall
When? Late in third quarter
Why? Hall disappointed a lot of supercoachers as well this week. He started off very slow with just one touch in the first quarter. But fired up and then died down again. Showing inconsistency. He was subbed off when his performance dropped. Cannon was the sub, as he had a limited pre-season from a knee injury. It was his first game back for the season and the suns want to ease him into the side.
Hawthorn vs Geelong
Hawthorn
Green Vest: Jack Gunston
Red Vest: Broc McCauley
When? Early in the 4th.
Why? This is a common sub strategy from coaches, a ruckman comes off and bring on a faster player. Gunston was chosen as Kermit for the second week in a row, he came on to great effect last week and Clarkson was obviously hoping for some more magic. But was unable to fire with just the 4 possessions, but somehow 49 SC.
Geelong
Green Vest: Mitch Brown
Red Vest: Billy Smedts
When? Mid way in the 4th term.
Why? Smedts effect in the game wasn’t really fading away, but I guess Scott just wanted to ease him in. Smedts was fatiguing as the game went on and his effect on the game was being lessened. He played well though with 12 possessions a goal and 42 SC. Brown was given the most unwanted piece of AFL apparel because he is a good utility, playing down back occasionally in his previous years but being able to go forward, take a good mark and kick a goal.
Hope I gave you a good read and something to think about. Appreciate feedback so I can help you as best I can!
