Welcome to this week’s SuperCoach SuperSubs review. We are starting to find a little bit about what coaches are doing with there subs, what type of players that are receiving the vest. This will benefit your team in knowing which players to put on the field, and which to have on the bench. A lot of injuries early in games this week to key players, resulting in early substitutions, and chance for some young guns to shine. Anyway, head over the break for the weeks review!

Carlton vs Collingwood
Carlton
Green Vest: Nick Duigan
Red Vest: Kane Lucas
When? Early in the 4th quarter.
Why? Duigan was put as sub as this was his first game of footy for the year and Carlton want to ease him into the year understandably. Kane Lucas was given the red vest as he was starting to tire and lose his effectiveness.
Collingwood
Green Vest: Ben Sinclair
Red Vest: Ben Reid
When? Quarter time
Why? Ben Reid was subbed off injured at quarter time with a heavily strapped quad/hamstring. Ben Sinclair was put as sub because he is a short burst player, can come on and pick up the possisions in quick succession but he didn’t do that on Friday night finishing off with 4 possies.
Richmond vs Melbourne
Richmond
Green Vest: Adam Maric
Red Vest: Tyrone Vickery
When? Mid-way through the last.
Why? Vickery was subbed off because he wasn’t getting much of the ball, not taking the marks and kicking the goals which isn’t good when your playing Melbourne and winning by 10 goals… Maric was subbed on and racked a huge 2 SC points!
Melbourne
Green Vest: Lyndyn Dunn
Red Vest: Stefan Martin
When? Mid way through the third.
Why? The Dees still had a sniff at the time and to win they had to enforce some more run. Dunn was put as the sub as he can do this and also take a nice grab up forward. But he couldn’t win it for the dees but did well finishing with 23 SC and 2 goals.
Port Adelaide vs Sydney
Port Adelaide
Green Vest: Cam O’Shea
Red Vest: Alipate Carlile
When? Early in the last.
Why? Bearfly Quote: “O’Shea might be considered a big bloke being 197cm, however he is a very athletic lad and covers the ground well and has spent alot of time training with the midfield group with the ultimate view to playing on the wing.” O’Shea was put as sub for those reasons lol. But he spudded it, with 3 clangers resulting in 3 opposition goals and picked up a magnificent point for your Supercoach side... Carlile was subbed off with quad soreness in the last.
Sydney
Green Vest: Andjreis Everitt
Red Vest: Ben Mcglynn
When? Early in the third quater
Why? Mcglynn was subbed off after getting a kick to the shin just before half time, but he was subbed off early in the third. Everitt was given the green vest as he is a player who can come on and take the game by its neck. He kicked the winning goal last year which is an example of how he can dominate late in matches. He came on and played OK grabbing 8 possies and 35 SC.
Fremantle vs Brisbane
Fremantle
Green Vest: David Mundy
Red Vest: Nathen Fyfe
When? Mid way in the second.
Why? Mundy was chosen as sub as this was his first match back from his broken leg last year. Like other coaches Lyon wanted to ease him into the season. But Fyfe had to dislocate his sholdour, shattering many supercoachers score with a measly 37, likely out for the year, but depending on the scans he may be back as early as this week!
Brisbane
Green Vest: Jared Polec
Red Vest: Matt Leunberger
When? Mid Way in the second.
Why? Much like Freo, a key player went down mid way through the second term, with Matt Leunberger going down with an ACL injury. But Jared Polec came on and dominated, playing the best game of his carrer so far, this kid will be a star. He kicked 2 goals, 17 possesions but only 61 supercoach in the lions defeat.
Gold Coast vs Essendon
Gold Coast
Green Vest: Trent Mckenzie
Red Vest: Sam Day
When? Mid way through the third.
Why? T-Mac was the sub for the second week in a row, as I said last week he had a very limited preseason with a knee injury, so the suns are easing him into the year and giving him match fitness. Day is a big boy at 196cm and 96 kilos, haven’t heard much about him but as I remember he was the number 3 pick for them last year, despite his height he is athletic, he was subbed off because he just was playing as well as a sack of potatoes.
Essendon
Green Vest: Ricky Dyson
Red Vest: Courtney “Im gonna get injured when everyone trades me in” Dempsey
When? Mid way in the first quarter
Why? Courtney Dempsey did his left hamstring early in the first quarter, after a quick analysis the doc’s deemed him unfit to play, stuffing up 88,375 supercoachers. Dyson was given the green vest as it was his first game of AFL footy for the year. He came on early and got 14 possies and 50 SC.
Bulldogs vs St.Kilda
Bulldogs
Green Vest: Nathan Djerruka
Red Vest: Tom Liberatore
When? Mid way in the third
Why? Djerruka is a speedy young player who would be a great sub if he had a little more experience, his zippy speed and agility is a great combination for a potential goal sneak. Little Libba was subbed off because he just wasn’t playing great, and a young body = a sore body.
St.Kilda
Green Vest: Jamie Cripps
Red Vest: Sam Gilbert
When? Just after half time
Why? Sam Gilbert had back soreness in the second quarter, after some tests at half time they deems him unable to play so on came Jamie Cripps. Cripps is one of the lightst at the saints at 83 kilos, I’m guessing that Waters was thinking this would be a tight game, and someone who can come on and sneak a couple of goals would be very handy. This wasn’t needed as the saints crushed the dogs.
GWS vs West Coast
GWS
Green Vest: Curtley Hampton
Red Vest: Jeremy Cameron
When? Mid way in the third
Why? After a 4 goal rising star performance last week it would be fair to say most people were disappointed with the 2 possesions and 18 points, Cameron did receive a heavy knock to his head in the second quarter though. I have watched GWS over the last few weeks and saw Hampton as being the sub one week. He just suits the role with his style of play, I can see him kicking freakish goals and being a gun in the future.
West Coast
Green Vest: Pat Mcginnity
Red Vest: Bradd Dalziell
When? Half time
Why? Dalziell and Jeremy Cameron had a heavy clash in the second, and Dalziell came off second best, he was helped off by trainers and the doctors assessed him during the half time break and ruled him unable to play. Mcginnity was activated, he has played 44 games but this being his first for the year. Something we can take out of this is that most coaches are giving the vest to people playing their first game for the year.
Hawks vs Crows
Hawks
Green Vest: Shane Savage
Red Vest: Grant Birchall
When?
Why? Birchall was subbed off after suffering what seems to be a minor soft tissue injury in his leg, he was subbed off as mainly just a precaution. Savage will be a gun, he is just 21 years old and has cemented his spot in the hawks side. He was chosen as sub as he can be there when it counts, and that’s what he can do when he has already played the other 3 quarters, so if he came on when he wasn’t even tired, he could do a lot.
Crows
Green Vest: Sam Kerridge
Red Vest: Tom Lynch
When?
Why? Tom Lynch was being held quiet by Stratton but had done his job and managed 2 goals from his 6 disposals. Kerridge was a late change for Ricky Henderson, playing his first game he was given the green vest. I don’t know much about him as I haven’t seem him play but I do know that he is a just turned last week 19 year old who is 188c, and 86 kegs. He had an impressive preseason, hope to see a lot more of him in the future.
Kangas vs Cats
Kangas
Green Vest: Kieran Harper
Red Vest: Ben Cunnington
When? Early in the 4th
Why? Cunnington was subbed off early in the 4th because he wasn’t playing great, but considering he was head to head with Jimmy Bartel, he did OK. Finishing with 12 possesions and 46 SC. Harper was chosen as sub
Cats
Green Vest: George Horlin-Smith
Red Vest: Andrew Mackie
When? Half time
Why? Mackie had lower back problems late in the second and was subbed off at half time for this reason. Horlin-Smith was given the green vest in his first AFL match. He is 186cm 78kgs, He has been at the club a couple of years now, his body has matured and he is ready for AFL footy! Will be interesting to see how he goes this year.
Well that’s it for this week’s review, I think we are starting to get some info out of what coaches are doing at the moment. Hope I didn’t disappoint and look forward to hearing your feedback!
