Welcome to SuperCoach SuperSubs round 4 review. For you new readers this article shows you who got the green/red vests, when and why. So you can decide better who to put on your field and who to put on the bench! Anyway this week was full of injuries that hurt the fantasy world. Hope your team wasn’t hurt to bad. We are starting to learn what coaches like to do with their vests. More is becoming apparent as the weeks move on. So head over the break to see what we learnt this week!

    <!--more-->

    Fremantle vs St.Kilda
    Fremantle
    Green Vest: Lachie Neale
    Red Vest: Nick Suban

When? Mid way through the third term
Why? Lyon was really having trouble on choosing who to sub off, this was the time to do it though with Neale being a short speedy player and he came on to great effect. Suban was eventually chosen to be given the red vest. He was having an off night with just the 3 disposals and 16 SC points.

    St.Kilda
    Green Vest: Jamie Cripps
    Red Vest: Jack Newmes

When? Late in the third quater
Why? Cripps was chosen as sub for the second week in a row, and my guess is he will be the sub again next week after his performance. He was the SuperSub, coming on and doing his job, in creating goals and kicking 1.1 himself. Newmes was subbed off as it his his first year, first year players get tired more easy and his effect on the game was going away.

    Carlton vs Essendon
    Carlton
    Green Vest: Brock McLean
    Red Vest: Andrew Carrazzo

When? Early in the first quater
Why? Andrew Carrazzo went down with a serious shoulder early in the first quarter, which was a serious loss for the blues. This gave McLean his chance to keep his spot in the team for another week, and I reckon he did that, grabbing 17 possessions and a goal.

    Essendon
    Green Vest: Cory Dell’Olio
    Red Vest: Michael Hurley

    When? Half time
Why? Hurley strained his hamstring and will miss the Anzac day clash according to the medics. That will be a huge loss for the bombers. This gave Dell’Olio his chance to shine on the big stage, and he probably did so grabbing 9 disposals, 5 tackles and 3 goal assists.

    Collingwood vs Port Adelaide
    Collingwood
    Green Vest: Paul Seedsman
    Red Vest: Ben Johnson

When? Mid way through the third
Why? Paul Seedman was given the green vest for the third time this year, (rounds 1,2,4) He has a much lighter frame then the rest of the team, being just 72kg. This is also his first year, and Bucks must see him being the perfect sub candidate. Or just will keep giving him the vest until he gains some weight. But he killed it when he came on mid way through the third, grabbing 12 disposals a goal and 41 SC. Johnson is an old fella and it was his first game for the season so they didn’t want to run him into the ground.

    Port Adelaide
    Green Vest: Chad Wingard
    Red Vest: Brent Renouf

When? Early in the 4th quarter
Why? Chad Wingard was given the green vest after coming back from a concussion and eye injury last week. He is also a good sub candidate, being a ball magnet and efficient user of the ball when he gets it. Renouf was subbed off as Port just wanted some extra run and speed and being a ruckman he doesn’t have that… It was also his first game for the year.

    Crows vs GWS
    Crows
    Green Vest: Ricky Henderson
    Red Vest: Jared Petrenko

When? Mid way in the 1st quarter
Why? Petrenko was collected by his own teammate and then hit his head on the ground. He then came back on 10 minutes later, but was subbed off a few minutes later. Ricky Henderson was a late in and was given his chance to keep his spot in the side and there isn’t a doubt about it, he did that getting 13 possesions and a goal at 85% efficiency. Also got the 67 SC points.

    GWS
    Green Vest: Jacob Townsend
    Red Vest: Adam Tomlinson

When? Mid way through the third quarter
Why? Jacob Townsend is a developing utility. He has been there from the start for the giants, being the sixth player to sign with them. He was probably given the vest as he is a utility and has the flexibility to play in numerous positions. But he hasn’t been performing greatly so his name is on the chopping block, he came on mid-way through the third quarter for 7 possesions and 25 SC points. Tomlinson was subbed out as he is one of the Giants key defenders, and not a huge ball winner, this game was being played on the ground a lot so he wasn’t needed as much as normal.

    Lions vs Gold Coast
    Lions
    Green Vest: Ryan Harwood
    Red Vest: Sam Sheldon

    When? Early in the last
Why? Harwood is a “in-and-under” midfielder, who will put his body on the line for his team. Many people thought this game would be closer then what it turned out to be, so late in the game. Someone who can dive on the ball and get a clearance is vital in that match. It turned into a blow-out but Harwood still managed 8 possessions and 20SC in his quarter of footy. Sheldon was subbed out as he was a late in and not playing very effectively.

    Gold Coast
    Green Vest: Luke Russell
    Red Vest: Jarred Harbrow

When? Late in the second quarter.
Why? Harbrow was subbed off with an injured elbow. He damaged it while attempting to tackle a Lion in the 2nd quarter. Russell was given the green vest as lightly built midfielder/half-forward who boasts good speed and a good leap and this could have been extremely valuable late in a tight game.

    West Coast vs Hawks
    West Coast
    Green Vest: Pat Mcginnity
    Red Vest: Quinten Lynch

    When? Early in the 4th
Why? This seems to be a very popular substitution, out with the big, in with the small. Il speak more on that later. Lynch was subbed off for that reason. Mcginnity is a 183cm midfielder/utility who has played 45 games now. He has zippy speed and usually a dead eye kick. He didn’t get much of the ball though finishing with 3 possesions and 19 SC points.

    Hawks
    Green Vest: Brad Hill
    Red Vest: David Hale

When? Early in the 4th term.
Why? It was Hill’s first game and in such a close game it was always going to be hard for a youngster to have an impact. Hill has phenomenal speed and Clarkson’s reasoning behind giving him the vest must have been to use this speed late in the game to an advantage. He finished with 3 touches and 7 SC points. Hale was subbed off due to a concussion and also being a big man wasnt much use late in the game where speed was the key to victory.

    Geelong vs Richmond
    Geelong
    Green Vest: Jesse Stringer
    Red Vest: George Horlin-Smith

    When? Early in quarter 4.
Why? It was Stringer’s debut and it has been made obvious to me that it is a huge step up to the AFL from their previous clubs. So to ease him into his carrear while still giving him a taste of the big time was giving him the vest, once coming on he killed it with 7 possessions and 39 SC. Horlin-Smith was subbed off as he wasn’t playing great and Stringer could fit into the role he was playing.

    Richmond
    Green Vest: Matt White
    Red Vest: Adam Maric

    When? Mid-way through third.
Why? White has amazing speed and in my opinion, should have been subbed on earlier. He came on and got 20SC. Maric was subbed off with the 7 possiesions and 17 SC next to his name.

    Sydney vs North
    Sydney
    Green Vest: Tony Armstrong
    Red Vest: Gary Rohan

When? Half way through the first.
Why? Armstrong was traded over from Adelaide, and was given his shot this week at the swans, and with Rohan breaking his leg he had an opportunity to show the crows why they should have kept him. He didn’t fully take advantage of this opportunity with just the 8 possesions. Rohan broke his foot/leg very horrifically. Wish him the best of luck in his recovery as that looked extremely painful.

    North
    Green Vest: Kieran Harper
    Red Vest: Todd Goldstien

When? Late in the third quarter
Why? Harper was chosen as the sub for the second week in a row, due to his speed and his light 79kg frame. Goldstien was subbed off due to his poor game. 18 hitouts up to his gift of the red vest is very poor considering last year’s form from the big man!

    Melbourne vs Bulldogs
    Melbourne
    Green Vest: Luke Tapscott
    Red Vest: Mitch Clark

When? Mid way through the third
Why? This was Tapscott’s first game back from injury so giving him the green vest to ease him into the season and get his match fitness up. Mitch Clark was subbed off in a horrific fall from a huge specky attempt. He has been cleared of any structural damage which is good.

    Bulldogs
    Green Vest: Shaun Higgins
    Red Vest: Ayce Cordy

    When? Late in the third
Why? Higgins was probably the biggest surprise of the round in the subs category getting the vest. Maybe there is a question mark over his fitness that we don’t know about. Or maybe the coaching staff saw an opportunity in sticking an experienced player in late in the game fresh, to dominate. He came on and got 7 possesions and 29SC points. Cordy was subbed off, in another tall to small/speedy player.

WHAT WE LEARNT: Paul Seedsman may be a perma-sub being given the green vest in rounds 1,2,4.
That the most popular substitution is a tall key positon player, or ruckman getting subbed off for a smaller speedier player.

May not be much that we learnt this week, but its only early and the information can only grow as the weeks go on. Hope this helped in some way. Cheers
