    Hi everyone,

With the adjustment of the association down to 16 teams, we have 56 players being released into the available player pool. How we handle the take up of those players is still yet to be decided.

One option is to just add them to the player pool like any other player. The other option is to have a dispersal draft, where for the first round, each franchise gets to pick a player from one of those two clubs, and then the rest of the player pool (including new draftees) gets added into the draft from Round 2 onwards.
Please vote here on your preference, unless anyone tells me otherwise, I am going to go a first past the post on this one... so 9 votes gets the option over the line.

Please let me know with a thumbs up when you have voted, saves me having to chase people

Voted for option 2, the release of a small number of highly effective players into the pointy end of the draft is, imo, more than enough of an "equalisation" legup.

Have to agree....my thinking right or wrong is that the lower teams can now draft a stud SC player from the two franchises, as opposed to drafting a high end rookie kid who may or may not become something 'eventually'.

An issue with "releasing a small number of highly effective players into the pointy end of the draft"

Is that it significantly changes the nature of the 2024 PSD draft pool.

Several coaches have already traded ORFFA 2024 PSD picks. It was a fair assumption by coaches when making these trades that the 2024 ORFFA PSD pool would be similar to previous ORFFA PSD pools. If Chooks and Warriors players are released into the 2024 PSD pool and there isn’t a dispersal draft this isn’t the case, due to the greater talent pool a 2024 PSD pick becomes more valuable than an equivalent 2023 PSD pick, especially in Round 1.

A trade posted by @That KI Guy on 22 February 2023 is:

    "Tradeaholics Anonymous
    Chair: me
    Attendees: @Bandit

Lefties send their 2024 psd 1st and 2023 msd 1st into a bottomless pit in Tassie.
The Opening sends back 2023 psd pick 7 and their 2023 msd 1st."

It is post #13 from the thread below:

    http://tooserious.net/forum/threads/orffa-2022-2023-offseason-completed-trades.91268/

If Chooks and Warriors players are released into the 2024 PSD it would advantage the Spelunkers who have traded in a 2024 1st Round PSD pick and disadvantage the Lefties that have traded out a 2024 1st Round PSD pick.

Adding the Chooks and Warriors players to the 2024 PSD pool isn’t a fair outcome in my opinion and a dispersal draft is a much better option.

You are 1000% correct Dean, forgot all about future trading. If I could change my vote I would.

When trading a top 5 pick at MSD time you have no real knowledge of which draftee you will be able to target, you might need a Harley Ried, you might need a different role filled. This is no different, only that there will be a group of players with experience and thus can be targeted with some confidence in output, but the top 6 picks do tend to change throughout each year, anyone trading a pick 1 o 5 knows they are trading out a potential future star, regardless of age.
I get it's a discussion point, but don't see it as a difference of significance, and the bottom teams who held their picks are better placed than most to adviance up the ladder. I can't see that as anything other than a positive.
Could they advance more if their were 2 drafts? Probably, but trading effects list progression far more than drafting.
Personally I'm not fussed wither way, other than seeing two drafts as an artificial construct that will only complicate a process that I prefer to keep elegantly simple and "pure".

I completely agree, DMA. I had been thinking this too.

I can’t see how it’s fair to include them in the player pool. It completely alters the format of the draft and the value of picks for this one year only.

I also think just one round for the dispersal draft isn’t enough. I think the ideal would be 2 rounds snake draft just for players from the two disbanded teams. And then have our actual PSD like normal afterwards.

With both teams starting 15 on-field players and having depth players, there will be 32 players to share around in the dispersal draft.

That way DDB would get picks 1 & 32, and GGH would get 16 & 17, for instance. LLL would get picks 5 & 28.

I think there have been ten (10) 2024 PSD draft picks traded all up, including three first-rounders, and a high second-rounder.

There’s no way I would’ve traded PSD pick 20 for Jamaine Jones if I’d known the Chooks and Warriors players would be available around that pick.

Thanks TTH. There are easily 32 draftable players in that list.

It was @That KI Guy who suggested a 2-round dispersal draft in the other thread, and I agreed with him at the time.
I think it’s much fairer to get these players out of the way before we commence our real draft.

Snake order is the best way for a dispersal draft imo, for obvious reasons.

But you took a punt that Jamaine Jones would turn out to be a stud.... he didn't. If he did, you wouldn't be sitting here regretting trading pick 20.

Hindsight is 20/20, we all have a vote in this, I encourage people to vote how they see fit, this is EXACTLY why I put this to a vote.

The conversation is good, but it would be great if people could make a decision based on what suits them best... in the next few days

Ah, as Banditto points out the beauty of hindsight.

The question that seems to be being ignored is what are we trying to achieve? If it is a form of equilisation among teams (which I think it is) is the objective to speed up this process for some teams? If so, that will be at the expense of other (mid-table) franchises who need to rebuild. The Law of Unintended Consequences.

We have seen this season the fruits of patience in an extended rebuild (vide the Nuffers and the Cavemen). For mine that is what a long term keeper league is all about. In the off-season the cows decided (unwisely) to have one more shot at another premiership before rebuilding. When that was obviously doomed we continued to field our best available team every week - another dumb decision as we ended up ninth. We then fielded our strongest available team in the first of the "who cares cup" and got comprehensively beaten by the side that had finished eighteenth; one of the sides we seem to be giving an assist to help their rebuild. WTF?

In hindsight we should have tanked, but that goes against everything I think the league stands for. We now set out on a rebuild expecting it to take time. I guess I am not the only participant who has a similar story. A vote for two separate drafts will mean extra years of pain for some of us. This vote seems to be about self interest - fair enough. It dictates a lot of decisions in our lives.

To me the vote should be about how we perceive ORRFA - is it a long term keeper league or not? We are in our twelfth year and I would hope we have (at least) another twelve.

    Thanks for reading.

I tend to agree that the vote is about self interest.
Ideally should we perhaps be looking for a solution which fairly distributes the spoils of the two franchises?
    Maybe just a random lottery?

    I wondered the same thing.
I’m personally not voting on self interest. I think a dispersal draft is what’s best and fairest for the competition.
I was thinking to suggest a random lottery based on the way the NBA does it, where the bottom teams have more chance for a high pick, but everyone is a chance.

I disagree about this. It’s not hindsight, it’s because the goal posts have shifted.
JJ is still the same player I traded for. At the time he was injured and unlikely to play again this season. I still have high hopes for him, and I would do the trade again in a usual draft. At the time of the trade i had no reason to believe it wouldn’t be a usual draft pool. But now with 50 or so players added to the pool, some of which are 1st round quality, the pick is soooo much more valuable.

Our good friend @choppers messaged me with an idea for something we can consider instead of adding all players to the pool if we don’t decide on a dispersal draft.

    Here are his words:
The poll is currently leaning the way of the dispersal draft, but if it swings the other way, I think Choppers’ idea is a good one.
