Just to get some good old fashioned inter-island (and shark) rivalry happening with my fellow South Oz islander Grav/That KI Guy, I proudly announce the launch of the Wedge Island White Pointers. Wedge Island is a partly privately owned island, with an area of about 10km situated between the southern tips of Eyre and Yorke Peninsulas at the entrance to Spencer Gulf in South Australia. It is the largest of the small Gambier Islands Group. Although not permanently inhabited, Wedge Island has a variety of buildings which are used for holiday accommodation and as a base for recreational fishers and diving groups. Access to the island is via light aircraft or boat only - there is an airstrip on the island as well as a jetty. There is a lighthouse at the south-eastern end of the island, which is also the highest point on the island. Wedge Island was named in 1802 by Matthew Flinders. It was originally settled in the mid-19th century as a farm for breeding horses for the British Indian Army, with various agricultural activities such sheep and cattle grazing and wheat cropping continuing for the next 130 years. During World War II, Wedge Island was used as a radar station by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). A bunker was constructed near the lighthouse and was occupied by about 40 RAAF personnel for several years. As with most of the off-shore islands in this region, there is an abundance of marine life, including the ever present danger of the oceans most feared predator, our club mascot, the White Pointer (often called the Great White Shark). Visiting teams will find the newly developed sports complex to be a challenge predominately due to the strong winds common during winter months, however the hospitality of the Wedge Island White Pointers Football Club is warm and hearty.
With the inaugural ORFFF draft in it's closing stages, management of Wedge Island White Pointers welcome the first 26 selections to the club. Having a primary focus of assembling a squad of predominately young players about to hit their prime, the Pointers squad is shaping up. Captain and leadership group selections will follow after the conclusion of the draft (and/or post draft trade period). Our squad so far (overall selection # in brackets): Defence: Rory Laird (46); Taylor Duryea (115); Jake Kolodjashnij (206); Harris Andrews (270); Jack Grimes (302); Kamdyn McIntosh (339); Lachlan Hansen (371); Tom Barrass (398); Midfield: Ollie Wines (14); Taylor Adams (78); Cameron Guthrie (110); Jordan Lewis (147); Levi Greenwood (179); Brendan AhChee (238); Jimmy Toumpas (334); Forward: Toby Greene (51); Jesse Hogan (83); Jamie Elliott (142); Lewis Taylor (174); Callum AhChee (243); Darcy Moore (275); Brent Harvey (307); Riley Knight (366); Tom Lamb (403); Ruck: Mark Blicavs (19); Nathan Vardy (211);
The 29ers look forward to travelling to your home patch for our debut match this week @Bearfly, particularly as your club has 3 players who wear #29 in the AFL (Boomer, Guthrie and Laird). FYI we will be chartering some jet boats across from Port Willunga around 2pm ish on Thursday so expect us to rock up a few hours before the match is due to commence. Also let us know if we need to bring anything for the Rd1 after party !
Better make sure everyone is strapped safely in those jet boats @TheTassieHawk - wouldn't want anyone falling overboard close to the island considering the welcoming committee swimming around As for the after party, all the 29ers need to bring is a good appetite for quality for quality seafood, and a solid thirst for cold froffies
