TooSerious
For those who take it way too seriously
As mentioned in the forward on the main page, this will be the 4th season of our TS fantasy NBA leagues in a row. The first season saw us have one league of 20 teams, before we moved to a promotion and relegation system across 3 leagues of 12 for the past 2 seasons.
In the top flight over the three seasons, Dabombers won season 1, Jasmine won season 2, & Ruddy won season 3.
There's still a bit of time to go before the season, but we have a few things to sort out between now and then, so we thought it best to get stuck into it now. Steve will be doing the most of the organising/admin/writeups etc through the season, but he's got a fair bit on his plate at the moment, so I'm helping out for the rest of this month.
The main things I see that we need to sort out and agree on, in order, are:
1. Participants;
2. Scoring system adjustments;
3. Length of season;
4. Draft dates;
5.Promotion/Relegation system changes;
6. There must be something else that I cant think of right now.
The season starts on October 29th US time, which is the morning of the 30th for us, so we have about 10 weeks to get sorted, which is good.
Last year, we had the drafts very close to opening night, whereas in the previous 2 seasons, we had them before daylight savings kicked in in Victoria. I'm not sure how we will go this year, but either way, it would be good to get points 1, 2 and 3 out of the way so that we can start researching in preparation for the draft.
The promotion/relegation system we had in place last year was as follows:
<blockquote style='margin: 0px 0px 0px 40px; border: medium none; padding: 0px;]
Promotion:
The 4 going up from Div 2 to Div 1 will be the two grand final teams, and (excluding the two GF teams) the team with the best 'points for' and (excluding said Points For winner) the best ranked team at end of our regular season.
The 2 teams going up from Div 1 to Premier will be the GF winning team, and the team with the best Reg season...

We've dropped the waiting list section, as there isn't much use looking at the players who will be cheap/good in a few weeks, but included some lesser selected players in good form right now.

A massive 3-game average and a cheap price with small selection numbers make Ward the perfect finals smoky, and for many coaches out there that ticks all the boxes. With Brisbane, Richmond and then the Suns rounding out the season for the Giants Ward should have every opportunity to go large, and could well be the difference come the grand final. On a side note we were going to go with 'Onward and Upward' for the title this week, but there are some connotations there that just didn't quite work.

Rockliff v. Greater Western Sydney
Rd 8 2012: 146 SC points, 36 disposals
Note: Only one game against the Giants. He also kicked three goals and 4 behinds in the game. He is coming off scores of 126, 166, 111, 128 and 147 (average of 136 from five games) after only averaging 96 in the first thirteen games of the season. (Daniel Merrett kicked 7 goals in the matchup last year and finished with a game high 177 SC points whilst Jonathan Brown kicked 5 goals and scored 154).

<div>Well the ORFFA FIXture leader Ant has received the submissions from the Top 4 teams, and the first round of finals matchups has been decided. There was a raft of bidding for the television rights form a lot of networks, however in a small surprise, the free-to-air rights were won by Imparja Television, a national, indigenous television service produced in Sydney and broadcast via Imparja Television's existing satellite capacity. For the PayTV component of the deal, Imparja partnered with SelecTV. SelecTV is available throughout Australia via satellite and focuses on providing content in comparatively low priced packages to a number of specialised market segments; including Spanish, Greek, and Italian. It is anticipated that being able to stream AFL in other languages may yield some exciting European style commentary. One hopes that a player can begin a scintillating run from the half back line, take 4-5 bounces and slot one from 50 with the commentator going off his nut and finishing with a long drawn out guttural GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL to bring the house down for those armchair surfers not getting out to the matches.

<div>Iron Knob v Powlett Plains : Friday 16 August 8:00pm AEST ...
It's the middle of August and so ends another ORFFL regular season. It got a bit heated in the last week as we began to have that difficult conversation that every professional fantasy keeper league must have at some point in time. The talk of tanking.
The season is over for the majority of teams in the ORFFL, so now seems as good a time as any to have that discussion about what if any is to be done about this spectre. And I'll try and use far more moderate language and temperament than I have in the past couple of weeks.
The facts are that the drafts we have are an equalisation method; the worse your team is, the better picks you get. In theory if your team is poor, you'll have the opportunity to draft better players so your team isn't so bad in the future (relative to every other team).
This system of course is open to teams deliberately trying to lose in order to get better picks. See any sport with such a last to first draft, fantasy is no different. The issue with this is that if half the teams are trying to lose to finish further down the ladder and half the teams trying to do the opposite it can be argued that it's not a true competition as not everyone's trying to win (although theoretically if you kept drafting good players your team would get better, making it harder to keep losing, perhaps somewhat besides the point).
As to how best to stop it, I'm all for ideas. My 3 main ones are:
a) shame. Calling out teams that tank and punishing them with ego-deflating peer pressure and a loss of draft picks if caught.
Although this is pretty much what we have now and no one likes fingering other coaches, err, so to speak.
b) Some kind of lottery system so teams are not guaranteed P1 if they finish last and etc.
You can obviously still tank under this system, the result is less certain.
c) Accept that it's a part of any competition with a last to first draft and agree to not be really blatant about...

<p style='margin: 0cm 0cm 13.5pt;]- perhaps get it kicked off from Round 2 or 3 with 3 weeks off for the Rd8-10 Mb's, and the Grand Final in around round 13/14, whichmeans a maxmium number of entrants of perhaps 256/512 teams up from 128 this year but would mean no seeding would apply
