TooSerious

For those who take it way too seriously

We continue our trek through our reviews of every clubs supercoach season, today taking a look at that club we all love to hate, Carlton.  Todays review is thanks to Hornsy. I was going to do my own little review of their overall season but have decided to leave this one as it was delivered to me. Im not sure if i agree with Hornsy with his opening paragraph, but hell they can dream cant they. Anyway have a read over the break.

<!--more-->Ah, Carlton. To us supporters theyre known as the Navy Blues, to all others theyre no doubt regarded as their second team. And an improving second team at that.  14 and a half wins in the home and away season in an era of equalisation and salary caps is a pretty good return. Pre-tty good.

But enough baiting, lets head on to some dry statistical analysis. As my rat-headed carnival working cousins say "Hop on the trolley"!

Carlton monopolise possession; both on the inside and outside so to speak. Ranking 1st in least Opponent Disposals and 2nd in both Short Kicks and Marks taken, as well as 1st in least Opponent Clearances, 2nd in Clearances and 2nd in Contested Possessions Differential vs Opponent. They also rank 4th for KE% @ 67.7% and 7th for DE% @ 72.8%.

Thats all well and good I hear you moan, but how exactly is it fantasy relevant?

Along with scoring goals,  getting the ball and keeping the ball is a pretty good way to score points in SC. So Id look at players from Carlton who are pretty good at doing those things; explosive ball-winners and defensive midfield sweepers.

Premiums (The Good)

Marc Murphy, at the age of 24, has had what could be termed a "breakout breakout" season.  Playing all 22 games and averaging 118 over the year, Murphy jumped from ordinary premium to the 5th best scoring midfielder in the competition. The improvement came on the back of improving his number of contested possessions (9th Overall) and score assists (7th), and he got close to magical 30...
Gday guys, over the next few weeks we will have a season review for each club from a supercoach perspective. They will include The Good, The Bad &amp; The Ugly and will also include a small watchlist of players to keep a eye out for heading into season 2012. Each review will have a big part of them written by fans of each particular club, which will hopefully give you better insight into the year, cos lets be honest who knows the clubs better then the fans. We kick things off with the Saints Season Review.
<!--more-->
The Saints season is a tale of two halves. It started off with off field drama after off field drama. That’s all on top of the heartbreak of losing a Grand Final for second successive year. Every Saints player seemed to have the weight of the world on their shoulders at start of the year. At Round 8 the Saints were sitting on 1 win, a draw &amp; 5 losses and finals looked like just a dream. All the experts were saying it was time to do a full rebuild and just play youth for rest of the year.

At half way mark of season the Saints had managed to get to 4 wins, a draw &amp; 6 losses. They had been playing some terrible football and looked far from the team that had played in the Grand Final the 2 previous seasons. This showed in their players supercoach scores, with most of the gun players all well below par. Only a handful of players had either improved on previous year or played at a consistent level. All of a sudden the Saints found their mojo in second half of the season, winning 8 games and only losing 3 times. This was on the back of some the lesser known players (McEvoy, Steven, Peake) all stepping upto the plate, but also their core group of players started playing like we have grown to know.  As a result all the premium players finally became premium players again.

What are you actually trying to say you may ask? Well basically it means going into next year a lot of the Saints players will be a little bit...
With no EPL due to the international break and for those who didnt make their Supercoach GF, it must have made for a frustrating weekend. Especially if you spent it trying to pronounce the Thai goalies name: Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool.

Dont fear though, EPL will resume again this weekend and well get a chance to see how the new signings get on at their new clubs. Over the next few weeks well get a better idea of how the teams are looking for the season, but Im going to jump in head-first now and give you my thoughts.

<!--more-->Man Utd and Man City are looking certainties to battle it out for the title, with possibly Chelsea and, at a push, Liverpool looking to join them. Arsenal have brought in some good signings but havent been able to replace the quality of Fabregas and Nasri, and having already dropped 8pts, I think pushing for a top four place is a realistic aim.

What about relegation though? One TS contributor suggested that this could be a year when one of the established clubs like Everton could go down, especially with promoted club QPR making some quality signings. This is a valid point. Theyve brought in SWP and Luke Young, as well as serial nut-job Joey Barton and if he can stay out of jail for the season he will add some extra quality to the midfield.

Of the other promoted teams, Norwich I think are in for a tough year, theyve done an incredible job by getting promoted in consecutive years, but when the injuries and suspensions start to bite I just dont think that theyll have the strength in depth to cope. Swansea I think will fare better than Norwich, but enough to stay up? Possibly! Theyve looked quite solid (four second-half goals at Man City apart) with two clean sheets to their name already. If they learn to start scoring then theyre in with a chance.

Everton to get relegated? My wife can spend more money in one trip to Baby Bunting than what Davie Moyes has spent at Everton. Theyre a big club but due to financial...
Nervously twitching away whilst awaiting the outcome of the TAB decision?  Consider this:

Hey guys - will have round and season review up in the next 2 days, in the meantime, if you hear any news on multi betting options within any agency throw it up here.
Well let me start out by saying that due to Fathers day commitments- good luck in getting a review out of me today! Too busy living it up in the lap of luxury! ;)

But what I can say is this- Well done ImpromptuSCE mate, unless Boomer and Petrie had a little punt against themselves and start kicking goals for the opposition- its all yours mate!

Youve put in a fantastic season mate- its been great seeing how you do it. Same as all you other boys who managed a personal best this season.

Myself, I reckon this year will be a top100 finish- which should be a personal best- however, since I tend to run these crazy TooSerious leagues, its another season where the competition was simply too strong and I failed to win a granny. Ah well, maybe next year!

Let us know in the comments how youve gone! Cracked a personal best? Won that league you wanted? Put in a poor one but youre committing to doing extra laps this pre-season? What ever the deal, Id love to hear about it!
<a href="http://tooserious.net/a-2011-retrospective-part-ii-shags-nags">Part II and <a href="http://tooserious.net/a-2011-retrospective-part-i">Part I

Alright, weve got ourselves the big finale, the story of the current #1 supercoach in the land. I gotta say, if at the start of the year, someone had told me that Impromptu would be heading up the entire comp leading into the final round- I reckon I would have called them nuts! Seriously, he is one out of left field who just breaks every rule, heck, hes traded out Sandi twice already! (and I bet had Pav not gone down, Kreuzer -> Sandi would have been a shoein! :p).

But seriously, Impromptu didnt have a great starting team- it was good, but with names like KHunt, OBrien, Montagna, Pittard, Atley, Bewick, LolRicho and Astbury- it certainly wasnt great, heck, even looking at his team now, its not perfect- I reckon hes the only team in the top100 that is fielding a position with a rookie (D7).

But through some excellent trading and impecible captain/bench work, Impromptu has managed to rally together his ragtag bag of misfits and push them into the position of being favorite heading into the final round, and for that- you gotta dip your hat. Well done mate, good luck.

I hope youre back again next year, from an 8man rookie midfield last year, to (maybe) taking it out this year- I cant wait to hear your thoughts on next year!

But enough from me, lets hear from Impromptu.

I first came across TooSerious about 4-6 years ago, basically before Walesy became famous and I became [in]famous. If I recall correctly, the site was just a few articles and provided the breakeven calculator which was the reason why I visited this site [edit: and it was an awesome shade of blue! - walesy]. Walesy seemed to be a nice guy so I gave him a donation. I think it was $10 or $20. I was quite difficult and I said to Walesy I don’t know what this Paypal stuff is, just give me your bank account and...
Alright guys, here it is- the Live Ladder!

It will update whenever the live stats fully update with completed SuperCoach scores. Enjoy and Good luck guys! :D

Friday Night Notes: Impromptu still holding the lead but a poor performance from Cloke has seen YaMum gain some ground. Big Guns overtook Shags, but has had 2 extra players. Meanwhile Sack the coach FFC and Grantus both took hits with Jolly.

GC vs Hawthorn- So, Gaz rolled his dice as manys captain with a big 170, springboarding Lings bandits to 3rd, LethalDons up to 6th and Riewoldts XXII to 7th. Shagga has dropped to 14th, but has only had 5 play, as opposed to the 9 that the top few have.

Dogs vs Freo - Wow, Lethaldons up to 4th, sucks that you were the single most decimated of all by the general mate, youre squad is showing some real fire. Lings Bandits is also charging up the ranks, still a fair bit off the pace though. Meanwhile, Impromptu has had one more player than YaMum, but is holding a 168 point lead. Gunna need something pretty extrodinary from the Murphy + McEvoy vs Judd + 180 difference to lose it from here, particularly if Cox does miss.
Alright guys, Ive just given the live ladder code a bit of a shake down and its looking alright.

Now, Ive taken a few liberties in taking an educated guess at what the top16 teams will be entering this weekend- along with Ablett as captain just to give us a bench mark.

Ive then used each players average as their "live score". The results are pretty interesting.

Not long now til the final lockout of the year, and just let me say- this has been an absolute ripper of a year guys, Ive loved every minute of it.

I just want to take the time to thank all the fellow writers, guys, you make this place tick and Im really impressed with how well youve done this year.

But enough sentimentality, we still have Grand Finals to win- and late breaking news to keep an eye on.

(That said, Im still waiting for someone to tweet that <a href="http://www.sportsnewsfirst.com.au/articles/2011/09/02/cox-follows-other-ashes-selectors-out/">Cox is out.)
