Hi all,
Gotta say last few nights have been sleepless as I have been struggling to come to terms with the ramifications of the loss of Sandilands from the Supercoach scene.
On the one hand, I can see the justification of getting in a relatively like-for-like replacement in a player such as the Swans Mumford (I hold Dean Cox already), however I possess not just Smith on the bench, but also the Petrie-Tippett combination (a better one than last years debacle).
This depth of Petrie-Smith allows me to have a player who should on average score in the 70-90 region. Â Sure, its not Sandilands, but its very much in line with the recent scores of Mumford.
And that brings me to the next thought, and really a Supercoach maxim thats been hard to apply this year, but never truer: Bench money is wasted money - the only dollars that count are on the field.
Rommels Legion (my team) was created with the thought in mind of "more premiums on field more often". Â But old habits died hard, and I kept players like Selwood through their trials (wise move) and also Rioli (unwise). Â Through it all, Ive lost ground on the leaders, so I cant really afford to think Sandilands will be back in 3, or that I can do a quick Smith cover, keep Sandi on the bench, then work it all out. Â Because Sandi sits on the bench, giving no return for his 550k. Â I need to use this money, and the fortuitous Petrie combination to drive improvement in my squad.
And thats where the Bailey Vardy thinking comes in. Â I wasnt a fan of it at first, but now Im thinking theres not too many other options. Â More musing, some Best Value Buys, the All-Australian Teams - its all after...

So, it was decided last week that because the current system had Heppell languishing on just a single vote, that it wasnt representative of the best in the rising star, so what we did was expand the 5-4-3-2-1 up to start at a 10. Weve also given the name a little tweak, named after our all time favourite rookie, Michael Barlow.
So, under this new value system, lets take a look at who won the last two weeks.
<!--more-->
Round 8 saw the nomination of Matthew Wright with his 116SC against the Gold Coast, off 24 touches being enough for him to rise a solid $63,000. This is Wrights second price move after moving a modest $37k in round 7. Wright was picked up by Adelaide in the rookie draft of 2009 and after a stand out performance in the 2010 SANFL, finishing 3rd in North Adelaides best and fairest, debuted in round 4 of this year.
Round 8
10: Wright
9: Minson
8: Wood
7: Nicoski
6: Watts
5: Buckley
4: Nahas
3: Wells
2: Goldstein
1: Reid
Round 9 finally saw Essendons Michael Hibberd break his bubble witha 75SC off 15 touches against the Tigers. It was his highest SuperCoach score for the year, off his lowest possession count, but his efficency of 80% was enough to see his salary rise by $51,200 and take this weeks nomination. Hibberd was drafted by Essendon this year after playing last season for Frankston in the VFL. While there, he managed to take out the Fothergill-Round Medal, awarded to the most promising young player, and award shared by this competitions namesake, Michael Barlow and fellow round 7 nominee, Robin Nahas. Hibberd debuted for the Bombers in round 6 and has been averaging 66SC off 17 disposals.
Round 9
10: Hibberd
9: Puopolo
8: Wright
7: Kennedy
6: Naitanui
5: S. Martin
4: Maric
3: Buckley
2: Watts
1: Shiels
And we see a new leader, round 8 nominee Matthew Wright has moved into the lead, polling in all three of his movement games this year.

It was fantastic to see so many new donors last week!!! A huge thank you goes out to everyone that has signed up recently!!
We had some interesting discussions last week, and our trade plans were thrown out of whack, by team selections, for the 3rd week in a row. But this time it wasnt a biggy, but it did cause us to trade out our 3rd option, Lower, instead of Matera, who was our 2nd preference to trade. And we all know how Lower played on the weekend! But Puopolo looks a better option than any of the forward line downgrades we were discussing, so its not all bad.
Our two trades last week were:
Lower --> Puopolo; and, Swallow --> Judd
We had our first tied vote in one of our polls! Usually, if we were tied near lockout, I have been able to drum up an extra vote from someone... but not this time. The tie was between Judd and Mundy for our upgrade, so I went with the cheaper option, which looks like it may pay off: Despite Judds minor injury, he outscored Mundy this week; and many around here are predicting Mundys numbers to go down during Sandis absence.
We didnt have such a fantastic week... A score of 2,333, which isnt too bad normally, but it wasnt enough to hold our overall ranking, as we slipped 524 places, out to 4,405th. And we only won one league game as well.
Over the break are our players individual scores for round 9::::

Joel Selwood surges to the top of my brownlow count this week, after 3 weeks in a row unanimously being declared BOG. Â Selwood was my initial pick for the medal this year, but after being concussed in the first quarter of the season, followed by missing the second game, that prediction was initially put to rest.
Since returning however, Joel has been in ripping form - averaging 124 SuperCoach points in his last 7 games, which have all been wins.
His favouritism early wasnt the Geelong bias coming through (well, maybe a little) - there was some science behind it:
- through 2008-2010 GAJ was the leading vote getter at the Cats, taking up 78 of the 314 votes collected (25%)
- in that time, Selwood was comfortably second with 56, an average of 19 per year (18% of overall & 24% of the non-Ablett vote)
- Bartel was well back on 32, followed by Chappy and Stevie J with 26 & 24 respectively
Even without natural improvement in his game, which youd expect from a 22 year old, his expected return increases to 24-25 just from Gaz travelling north. Â We are seeing the results now, with him leading my count on 15 after 9 rounds, and equal second with Franklin and Boyd in the public count behind Watson.
Franklin looks to be in ripping form - almost 2008 form, where he picked up 20 votes to win the Hawthorn count. Â His main competition usually comes from Mitchell & Sewell (Hodge is a very poor poller), with only Mitchell looking to challenge him at this point.
Watson has become the smoky again, with a few more weeks away from being able to add to his total.

So, round 9 has come and gone, with two major things happening- firstly, we had some HUGE scores this round- seriously huge scores; secondly, it looks like the king is dead! Captains choice is now officially a major point for us all to deal with!
So, lets get into it and see whats transpired.

Carlton v Geelong
Result: Geelong by 2 points, 15.12.102 to 14.16.100
Started off on Friday night with Carlton showing us all that they are definitely top 4 material this year, going head to head with the cats for 4 whole quarters, and were it not for an errant 20 meter kick at the dead, would have won. However, the Cats managed to keep their lossless record alive, walking away 2 point victors. Marc Murphy top scored for the game, his 32 touches at an 84% DE were enough for him to make 145SC points. Hot on his heels was Heath Scotland who racked up 34 touches for a 140SC. The Cats top scorer for the round was Joel Selwood- with 29 touches and a very nice 121SC. Waite put on 2 goals for a 120SC and the Chapster had a decent return to form with a 112SC. We saw a decent performance by Duigan, whos 92SC and a fantastic run of games to come will see his salary move up nicely. plenty of disappointing scores in this game though, Carrazzos 77SC, Bartels 61 was a real stinger, Duncans 55SC and Vardys 31SC were all pretty bad.
Heros: Murphy, Scotland, Selwood.
Villians: Bartel, Yarran, Taylor.
St Kilda v Melbourne
Result: St Kilda by 20 points, 16.10.106 to 13.8.86
Saturday rocked up, and the Saints managed to stick it to the Dees, walking out with a 20 point victory. If you tuned into the Captains Choice this week, you would have noticed that Joey Montagna was our 31 choice holding a 150 average against the Dees in recent matchups- and boy, he didnt disappoint, running rampant with a 38 touch performance and a 151SC. Riewoldt collected a massive 31 touches and a 141SC while Goddard also returned to form...

What with so many of the ppopular premiums performing, I think this might be a round to watch in terms of someone breaking through and getting that highest round score for the year thus far.
So how are we all tracking?
Hurting from playing Tappy on the field or elated that you picked Montaga or Marc Murphy to captain your squad?
Anyone regretting trading out Roo or Goddard?

Alright, round 9 is just about to fire up! I gotta say, Im enjoying the trading game this year, these byes are making it very interesting when deciding who should stay and who should go.
Happily this week, Im looking at bringing in two premiums and Higgo off the bench- so the charge up the ladder starts today! Bring it on!!
And as always, join us in the <a href="http://tooserious.net/live_scores.php?page=gameday&id=10250377&process=live">chat tonight[/url], or just check out the stats, it should be a ripper of a game!

Round 9 and it looks like the cavalry has arrived! Plenty of new rookies debuting this week, including pre-season favorite Tendai Mzungu!
Guess this means we wont have much to worry about over the next few weeks with downgrades.
A couple of INS that will make a few coaches smile- Rioli and Higgins are back- heres hoping they can reward the coaches who held onto them.

Gibbs vs Geelong
Round 21, 2010: 130SC, 26 disposals
Round 5, 2010: 122SC, 28 disposals
Round 19, 2009: 106SC, 32 disposals
Round 10, 2008: 72, 21 disposals
AA Geelong: 119

Chapman vs Carlton
Round 21, 2010: 133SC, 33 disposals
Round 5, 2010: 110SC, 28 disposals
AA Carlton: 111

Round 5, 2010: 98SC, 19 disposals

Round 10, 2008: 80, 21 disposals
Form: 131, AA Carlton: 110
Notes: Not a great history against the Blues, but not bad either. His latest saw him go head to head with Murphy while Ablett got the Tag. Still, his current formline is excellent.
Montagna vs Melbourne

Notes: Wow, what a formline against the Dees! Were they the same St. Kilda as last year, Id have no hesitation to say lock him in. With that though, I have a...
