For those who take it way too seriously

Its a little known fact that Im an avid fantasy baseball fan. Not fantasy in the same way we here play fantasy football, but computer simulated, fantasy baseball.

Been playing in an online league for more years that I would admit so when given the opportunity to write a review of <a href="http://www.premiership-coach.com/index.html">Premiership coach, the worlds first AFL management game, I jumped at the chance.

Not only that, but Ive been give the oppotunity to give three copys away. More on that at the bottom.

For those of you completely new to this sort of fantasy game, Premiership Coach gives you the chance to pick and coach your own squad using the real players from the league. Each player is given a statistical profile which closely mirrors their actual skill set and talents on the field. You pick a team from the pool of players in a draft and then coach them through a season (or many) in the hopes of taking the flag.

For the most part, I see this as being a game of two halfs. Theres the gameday action and then there is everything else.

<!--more-->

Im going to start with the everything else. And I say everything else because it offers an extremely comprehensive overview of what you would expect from a game like this. It measures a player over 31 different categories, from evasion to goalkicking on the run, from play reading to x-factor as well as their general ability to play in various positions around the ground. It offers the ability to take over your clubs training routines, instructing your forward line to work on their Goal kicking abilities, while getting your defenders to improve their contested marking abilities. Whats beautiful about it is that there are 24 different training schedules on offer, ranging from conditioning, to skills and to structure, that you can use, so if you want to train your midfielders to be better at a contested grab, or want your forwards to improve their in and under work, you can do that....
(You might want to read <a href="http://tooserious.net/?p=1031">This article before coming to this one...

Installation of <a href="http://www.premiership-coach.com/index.html">Premiership coach was easy enough, though you do need to follow a number of instructions to get all the pre-requisites set up right.

Once in though, I started a new game and figured I would try my hand at a fantasy draft. No point in coming this far and just grabbing a current team. Though the idea of grabbing Geelong and then dominating sure is tempting.

The first step is to select a team. I had a wry smile to myself when given the default team names to select from, and of course, had to go with the Jets.

And then it was the draft, two minutes to pick your player and then its the next teams turn. The first thing I did was to check out the stats of Gaz. And while yes, hes awesome, the thing I noticed most was the sheer amount of stats and ability measured. This game has got a fantastic amount of detail.

So, I tossed up whether to build my club around Gaz (if its a plan fit enough for the goldcoast, its fit enough for me!), or to go for Cox (The leagues premier Ruck, and as we generally know when drafting a team, Rucks are the hardest to fill later), Maybe go young with Kruezer, whos talent is measured as elite but he hasnt gotten there yet.

I quickly found out that we didnt have the first pick at all, Hawthorn did, they went with the Coondog. Our inaugrial #1 draft pick.

Funnily, West Coast used their first option to pick up Judd. Heres hoping they pick up Cuz later on in the draw as well.

In no time it got to us, we were 7th down and not expecting the timer, so panicked.

Lukily Cox was still an option, so we grabbed him. For a laugh, we got Fev with our seond pick. Next we focused on a engine room getting Pendles, Higgins, Ryan OKeefe and Jobe Watson (Cause of the man-crush - Love you Jobe!).

This went on for a while, in fact, about...
Gary Ablett Jnr is on track to become the first player to win back to back brownlow medals since Robert Harvey achieved the feat in 97 and 98, after polling three votes in a best on ground performance against the Power.  With his first best on ground performance of the year, the games premier player moves into outright first on a total of 7 votes.

Jared Brennan joins Brown, Riewoldt and Barlow in equal second place, in his second BOG for the year.

A little more unexpected, is James McDonald and Michael Rischitelli joining Ben McGlynn in equal sixth place, with each player earning 2 votes to back up their best on ground performances from the previous week.

This weeks guaranteed three was a little harder to choose - however have given it to GAJ with his 37 possession 3 goal performance against the power.  Dal Santo, Moloney and Judd should be other safe 3 vote winners for this week.

So, theres a lot of nicknames for players being bandied around these days.

Its been suggested that we open a thread so that we can consolidate them all.

Ill start it off with some of the more popular nicknames:

Tom Rockliff: The rock lobster, the lobster
Cyril Rioli: Delicious.
Robert Relton: The commentators dream
Alwyn Davey: Jack Rabbit
Alan Didak: Bang bang, Diddles
David Mundy: Crab
Brett Peake: Brett Potato
Mark Seaby: Captain Ahab
Alex Silvagni: SNOS, SCOSOS
Nick Malcesci: Eski, Malsexi

So, its started off- now its your turn! If we come up with enough, Ill see if I cant hook up some kind of directory.
Rucks are BACK! The Ruck-vival has begun.

It started off on Friday night with Cox (119), Naitanui (117) and Hille (76) all doing everything asked of them. I smell a tasty Cox upgrade in 2 weeks time! Sounds like Shuey might be gone for a while, so keep an eye on the midfield cows this week.

Not too many big suprises in that game.

The next game however, Daniel Hannebery smashed out a massive 146 and looks set to go up a massive $70k. Mumford and McIntosh continued the ruck-vival, while Seaby did enough. Malceski however, came back to earth- punishing those who chased last weeks points.

Carlton V Adelaide saw the return of one C. Judd, who top scored with a massive 148. Welcome back son! Andrew walker knocked up a massive 36 touches while K. Lucas and P. Davis put on a decent 83 and 79 respectively. Kreuzer continued the ruck trend with an 86, but sadly- not even the ruck-vival could save Tippett with a 47 - and another $53k coming off.

Collingwood got back in the winners column absolutely decimating the injured Hawks. Hodgey however, still top scored the game, while Jolly put up a decent 88. Poster Lucas, got home from the game and made a huge call on Daisys 132. Breakout year! It would be huge if he did! Tragic as well, cause Ive had him in my squad the last two years... Ball, Lockyer and Roughead all spudded it up.

The other game on Saturday night saw the Lions lock themselves in as solid GF contenders. When Brown cant deliver, Fev stood up and kicked 4. Brennan top scored with a 122 while Rockliff, The Rock Lobster, scored a mighty 96 to take his breakeven for next week to -108.

J. Riewoldt pulled out a mighty 147 in a Tigers unit, going down by 50 to the Demons. Sylvia had an impressive return with a solid 116. Scully finally repaided the faith with a 94, while Bail put up an impressive 87. Jamar continued his dominance in the ruck with an 85.

Captain Gaz scored a delicious 145 as the cats destroyed the Power. 11 ats broke the ton in...
Sorry about last week everyone (particularly Spud), but I didnt do too well anyway so no real harm done. We now have more of  a form line for this year than a form dot, so the real tipping can begin! Tips in bold as usual.

Friday April 16
West Coast v Essendon at Subiaco Oval, 6.40pm Top Scorer: Daniel Kerr, 143

The Weagles may not have won a game, but at Subiaco against an opponent they usually easily defeat at this ground, should win easily. Essendon was fired up last week, but theyre skills were still terrible and will be sliced apart on Subiaco.

Saturday April 17
North Melbourne v Sydney Swans at Etihad Stadium, 2.10pm

Im a bit behind, so this seems like a good match to catch up. Swans are 2-1, nearly beat the Saints, and should beat the struggling North. Seems to be stop Harvey, stop North, and the Swans are still the best in the business at shutting down players.
Adelaide v Carlton at AAMI Stadium, 2.40pm

Firstly, welcome back Juddy! Carlton will need his foot skills after last weeks display. Adelaide have been simply terrible, have added a few new injuries to the list and may be playing others sore. Despite their good record at AAMI against the Blues, Ive got to tip Carlton.

Collingwood v Hawthorn at the MCG, 7.10pm

Collingwood will want to do better after last weeks game, which was widely insulted in the media. They will rejoice at the suspension of Buddy Franklin (23 goals in last 4 games against the Pies) and Jolly/Fraser will have a field day against Renouf. Hawthorn normally play well against the Pies, but all the signs point to a Magpies win.
Brisbane Lions v Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, 7.10pm

The undefeated Lions have a chance to show how much of a premiership chance they are against the Bulldogs. The question will be who goes to Brown, with Lake likely to be used deeper on Fev. The Bulldogs have won 4 of their last 5 Gabba games, so dont be put off by that, but I...
So, its half time.

The Eagles have gotten off to a great start and NitNat is tearing it up!

Its not all roses just yet though, Kerr has done a hammy.

Lets see if theyve do enough to not fade out as they have so far this year. Carn you bombers!!
So, the teams are out.

The big outs and ins are:

IN: Davis, Shaw, Judd, Brennan, Farmer, Lobbe

OUT: Shuey, Stanton, Bock, Waite, McLean, Franklin, McGrath, Clark, Newman, Connors, Roberts, Riewoldt

With the following to watch on the extended bench.

Macdonald, Scully, Bartel, Duncan and Gray. Though I reckon Duncan is the only one we need to keep a close eye on.

Teams are over the break

Jonathan Brown joins Nick Riewoldt and Michael Barlow at the top of the leaderboard after another 5 goal haul in Round 3 - which was enough to give him 1 vote and join the leaders on 6.  Who would have though 2 key position forwards and a rookie would be leading the brownlow count after the first three rounds?

Ben McGlynn now finds himself in fourth position with a best on ground performance against the tigers to go with his 5 goal haul the week prior.  8 goals in two weeks - and we cant even get him in as a forward! (would have been a nice unique replacement for Roo...).

Two matches of the round were on Sunday in my opinion, where the Hawks v Dogs game brought about some fantastic individual games (couldnt squeeze BBBBBBH in to my top 6, let alone the top 3), and Freos upset win over the Cats saw the return to form for the little master.

Each week Ill be nominating a guaranteed three - one you can bet the house on.  This week it belongs to Brent Harvey, who was simply monumental in the win over West Coast.  Kane Cornes and Jonathan Brown are my guaranteed threes for the opening two rounds.

Hi all,

Just was doing some future planning and was thinking well it would be nice to know that there are some juicy downgrade targets across the board.  But with so many good prospects getting games regularly and early, we might not be able to get good cash cow $ plus handy bench coverage as we have done in the past.

What we are looking for are players who will remain under 150k, preferably in the 80-100 zone in the important Round 8-12 trade zone.  Assuming for all the noobs that this is when the midfield rookies reach their peak, and you can trade them out as they struggle to hit breakevens.

The question is who are the likely targets?  I will look at each position (over the break).

Defence:
Chris Schmidt from the Crows started late, may have average job security (Bock, Stevens, Rutten) but scored well on the weekend.  One to keep an eye on.
Andrew Moore, early draft pick from Port.  Got a taste, has the DEF/FWD ability (only really activatible with Waite though..) seems a slow burner but could be good coverage later in the season.
Jarrad Blight.  Big wraps on this Pie junior, but job security is hard in a strong Pies team.  Has the talent and will score if he gets games.  10 games max youd reckon.
Jeremy Webberley from Richmond.  That should be enough to have neon signs saying Buyer Beware, but might get games soon.  3 by round 10, and regular after that would perfectly suit Waters/Maguire upgrades.
Marcus Davies from Carlton.  Apparently the Blues are impressed and might get a run if they want to blood a few kids mid to late season.  (Finals aspirations gone if they lose this week?)
Talia and Davis from the Crows - got Preseason Time, but not much else.  If the Crows bomb further this year, these two with MPP F/D will have to come into consideration.
Injury Watch - for mine its Howard and Sheppard.  One with great ability to come in, one with a great team who can lift his scores.  Ill leave you to work out...
