Round 10 - Geek Pride Round

Birdsville (1101) defeated Gundagai (1051)
The talent at the Grasshoppers is finally starting to show, however they weren’t able to overcome Birdsville in a scrappy affair. The Battlers were unlucky to have Marc Murphy go down early, but Treloar (103) and Hunter (102) continued their sublime form. A lack of backline depth hurt the Hoppers, despite great outings from Curnow (128) and Neale (118).

Charlies Opening (1040) defeated by Cradle Mountain (1114)
This was an evenly matched contest between two teams hovering around the top 8, with Cradle Mountain comfortably getting the job done. The Spelunkers were hurt by a backline donut which was perhaps the difference in the match, with Kieran Jack (120) easily their best performer. For the Devils, it was usual suspects Pendles (118), Zaharakis (122) and Zorko (114) that ensured the win.

Wineglass Bay (1028) defeated by Iron Knob (1223)
Iron Knob will be a little disappointed with their start to the season, with a win over the Packers steadying the ship. Ablett (143) might be back to his best, while Roberton (102) finally proved his worth for Coach Jim. The Packers midfield failed to fire, with Lachie Henderson (105) the only player to crack the ton.

Darraweit Guim (1277) defeated by Larrikin Lagoon (1405)
The clear second-best team of the competition, the Lefties were again very impressive in their win over Darraweit. Jordan Lewis (141) fired in his 250th, while Goddard (130) had plenty of it. The Dirigibles put up a decent fight, with Armitage (149) returning to form, but Boomer Harvey (46) and Tyson (47) were unusually quiet.

Whitsunday (1108) defeated by Venus Bay (1231)
The Vultures are quietly slipping under the radar, easily accounting for the Warriors....

Wowzer, how about those Blues? Could be 7/5 in two weeks time.

Well Merrett ended up playing and knocking out 100, which was 1 better than the guy I changed to when I heard he was injured (Monty with 99) – For those playing at home, these are the Buys of the Week and how they went last week:

Merrett/Monty – 100/99 (I changed this one, half-way through but Merrett ended up playing – both did okay)

So near on 700 points from 5 players – let’s hope they continue to perform and that this week’s BoTW does just as well.

Jimcumbilly Jackrabbits 1182 lost to Humpty Doo Hammerheads 1245

Agadoo was pumping on the stereo on the return trip to Humpty Doo after a battling win by the Hammerheads. With a real glut of teams on 5/4 and 4/5 this was a must win. Led from the midfield by Neale 148 and Gray 120, and up forward by Gunston 119, the support cast did enough. Pretty Boy Joe was thrown into defence and managed a 29*. For the losers Matt Dea 128 took the 4 brownlow votes, however with Gibson 59 Martin 48 and Petrie 39 all well below average the ‘rabbits went down at home.

Mallacoota Magicians 1286 lost to Mt Buggery Disappointments 1327

The big question going in to this game, which still remains unanswered, is do we still have a coach of the Magicians. A stretched black limo with full security glass arrived at the usual time and place however a haze of disco smoke surrounded the Magicians bench for the whole game. When it cleared after the siren there was nobody to be seen. Was it all just an illusion or was it…..magic??

Certainly on the ground the Magicians put in a fighting performance scoring a solid 1286 which would have won most other games, however in this case it wasn’t enough to top the MIGHTY MIGHTY Disappointments.

After a strong start to the season the Magicians are being drawn back to the pack, however a strong points for is keeping them at the head of the cluttered middle rungs of the table.

Woy Woy Wizards 1070 lost to Purnululu Bungle Rangers 1219

Woy Woy slip to second bottom after going down to the PBR by 149. Heath Shaws 203 certainly helped and Walker 119 finally scored some decent points but Nathan Vardy in the ruck, FFS Tino he won’t be a late call up every week man, give Cooney a run, at least on the bench. Seriously, if Jack Watts can do it, anyone can. PBR stay in touch but it goes without saying that they will need to keep winning. Round 9 – Once in a Blue Moon Round

Round 9 of ORFFA action has come and gone, with a number of players (and teams) taking the round’s theme to heart.

And while one undefeated team continues to roll along atop the ladder, the race for positions in the lower part of the top eight heats up. And at the tail-end of the ladder, the game is most certainly afoot (to paraphrase a certain deerstalker clad detective).

Gundgai 1241 d Cradle Mountain 1183

Clearly not satisfied with an ascent into mediocrity, Gundagai has pulled out all stops to aim 1.35 steps higher, winning its second in a row 1241-1183 over the Devils.

Lead by the little big man Lachie Neale (148), as well as the match’s “Blue Moon score winner” Heath Grundy (118) and Charlie Cameron (114), the Hoppers have reached the dizzying heights of 10th on the ladder and sit half a game outside the top eight.

For the Devils, Pendles’ 140 led the way, with the magical Zorko (120) and hardworking Grigg (116) doing their best. But despite good late scoring from Hopper, Zaha and Johnson, the Hoppers’ lead proved too big to bridge.

Birdsville 1192 d Iron Knob 1091

In a true eight-point game, Birdsville scored an important win over fellow finals’ aspirants Iron Knob 1192-1091.

The low-scoring saw perhaps the ultimate Blue Moon performance from the Battlers’ basketballer-turned-Tiger-turned-Bomber Matty Dea, who somehow managed to score 126 and gain five votes in the Les W.

Treloar’s 115 was next best, with Birdsville enjoying consistent efforts from defenders Enright, McDonalds x 2 and midfielders Hunter, Murphy and Ebert.

For the Codpieces, the long-hoped for appearance of a genuine ruckman turned back into an apparition, with Will Minson again sitting out. He was last seen swearing under his breath in German and plotting an inadvertent injury to Tom Campbell. In his absence, Jack Darling’s OOP 22 was not enough.

Robbie Gray’s return (120) was welcome, and a consistent...

So, Gawn. Playing sore or something right? Talk about up and down!

Reckon we're gunna see some big scores this week though, particularly with Capt. Goldie knocking out a big 176.
