ORFFL Round 2 Review:

Milikapati Snakes 1184 defeated Queenstown Quolls 1092

The Snakes did enough in a low scoring affair to take the 4 points and get their season on track. Another 0 in the ruck (and defence) for the Quolls is a problem that isn’t going away when your 3 rucks are Wood, Currie and Giles. The recently unretired James Kelly proved he still has what it takes leading the way for the Snakes with 113. Assistance from Jack and Lambert both with 101 and Pavlich 102 was enough to defeat the undermanned Quolls. Getting big individual scores doesn’t seem to be a problem for them with Mitchell 144, Thompson 140 and Laird 127, getting 15 on the field and finding a playing ruck is proving more difficult. It appears it might be a frustrating season for the Quolls – anyone up for a game of Frisbee? Jeremy Howe is keen.

Popanyinning Pyrite 1208 defeated Tarwin Lower Pigs 1051

THUD! That was the sound of the TLP coming back down to earth after the heady heights of a R1 win. ¾’s of the midfield responded after last weeks sub par performance with Smith 115 Pendlebury 110 and Hanley 93 returning to form. Which ground Polec turned up to we are not quite sure but apparently he scored 8 wherever the hell he was. For the rest of the young Pigs it was a bit of a down week proving that they still have a way to go before becoming a consistently good team.

For the Pyrite it was another win which sees them sitting comfortably in 4th. Johannisen 123 continued his elite start to the year as he continues to reward the faith shown in him by management. Jenkins 118 and Sinclair 116 the next best in what was otherwise a fairly solid team effort.

Purnululu Bungle Ranges 1060 lost to Humpty Doo Hammerheads 1354

Jarrad Waite led all comers for the Hammerheads smashing out 174 and perhaps starting to live up to that potential that we all knew he had, even though Carlton did their best to beat it out of him. With the support cast of...
Some big scores coming through this week.

I got a 2299 with Captain Danger dragging me down so in pretty happy there.

Not too sure what I'm doing with Barlow, but something Ross said makes me feel that holding him might be the way to go.

Dunno though, think I need to get in JJ this week.

Bah, lots to think about, looking forward to reading the discussions.

Will get the stats up when I can.

Well Round 1 didn’t go exactly to plan with Melbourne upsetting GWS and Dangerfield upsetting Hawthorn. From a purely tipping point of view, 7 tips and a good margin on Thursday night wasn’t a devastating result, but we are hoping for a bit of an improvement. Thankfully this week (for SC and tipping purposes) all the teams have been named in one go, and TipBetPro has come up with the following tips for Round 2 of the AFL season.

This week we are tipping:
Collingwood to beat Richmond
Port Adelaide to beat Adelaide
Melbourne to beat Essendon
North to beat Brisbane
Fremantle to beat Gold Coast
Bulldogs to beat St Kilda
Geelong to beat GWS
West Coast to beat Hawthorn
Sydney to beat Carlton

ORFFL Round 1 Review:

Poowing Potoroos 1241 defeated Bonnie Doon Bandits 878

After the year from hell and a bottom placed finish in 2015 the Potoroos got off to a strong start with a solid win over the Bandits. The big news from down Poowong way was the return of Gaz who pulled out a lazy 139 after a limited pre season. After the great one it was a pretty even performance with only Bob Murphy tonning up.

With more holes than Blackburn Lancashire it was always going to be a struggle for the Bandits. Playing 2 short in the midfield and a donut in the ruck after Nafan’s bizarre decision not to play Grundy spelt doom right from the start. Josh Caddy raised the bat providing some relief but it could be a long season for the Bonnie Doon boys.

Tarwin Lower Pigs 1099 defeated Bundalong Bullfrogs 1021

Standout performances in defence and attack were enough for the Pigs to fall over the line against the Bullfrogs. Docherty, Hogan and Stringer all tonning up with strong support from Rory Lobb (100) in the ruck made up for a sub par midfield performance and a 0 up forward with Josh Green and The General not fronting up. With Rising Star nominee and ORFFL no 2 pick Clayton Oliver in the wings Pendles and co will need to keep on their toes if they want to keep their spots in the starting 4.

For the Bullfrogs it was a case of all fit hands on deck as they fronted without a ruckman and no-one available to even fill the breach. It ultimately proved terminal as they went down by 78 points. Somebody obviously found Trent although it was a quiet night for the Tiger captain. Maybe he thought it was still September. Although the Tigers got up, Bundalongs 4 prong Tiger forward line couldn’t get them over the line. More injuries, this time to Talia do not bode well for 2016 down at the Pond.

Mallacoota Magicians 1174 defeated by Sarah Island Savages 1536

The Savages proved to any doubters that they will be a force again in 2016 going...
What a terrible start to the season for the donors, not in the least bit helped by the Easter weekend and my complete lack of availability to actually look at team sheets. Seriously Mr AFL, why organise the first round of the season for the Easter break – its nearly as stupid as having an opening round over two weekends.

I think its best to start from the beginning, it seems like a logical place. Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there lived an ogre…. Wait a minute….

Season 2016 for the donors started with a couple of polls as to who we want in our team, and a few random suggestions from some of the donors themselves. Thanks to all who contributed to the initial make-up of the team. We were torn on a pure GnR strategy, or a mid-pricer per line strategy, but that became clearer when we found out that after the first couple of passes at team selection, we have around 12 positions remaining to select, and only $1M available – an impossible scenario. The lack of obvious rookies didn’t help either way.

After a few days of messing around before I went AWOL, the donor team for round 1 2016 came to look like the below, which wasn’t changed during the round…

Defence:

H Shaw, B Houli, R Laird, J Weitering, M Brown (Ess), M Hartley – M Adams, A McDonald-Tipungwuti

Midfield:

N Fyfe, P Dangerfield, G Ablett, D Wells, C Mills, C Oliver, S Kerridge, C Petracca – C Menadue, J Clayton, A Davis

Rucks:

T Goldstein, M Gawn – D Wyatt

Forwards:

D Martin, L Dahlhaus, M Barlow, A Hall, J Stringer, D Rioli – J Schache, B Kennedy

This team, and the way we selected the lineup, gave us a measly 2,002 points for round 1, with a ranking of 84,809. Is there anyone out there who didn’t beat that??? We’ve given away a lot of ground already, so it’ll be catch-up from here on out!

The team was selected as listed above, with AMT the defence emergency covering Hartley, and Menadue the mid emergency covering Petracca. Clearly there’s a few holes and donuts that may...
(with special guest performance by Graeme)

Gundagai Grasshoppers 1127 def by Foul Bay Chickens 1364

With snoz’s round 1 line up light on for Pies players and sporting an unhealthy smear of Blues, one might expect a foul aroma exuding from the tucker box. However a (relatively) respectable 1127 was enough to keep the heat on the Chooks for most of the game. Sporting an injury list longer than Schindler’s, the Hoppers 2nd and 3rd tier kids were left to lead the show. Solid efforts from Martin, Stringer, Cripps and Neale were well supported by debutants in Mills and Weitering. A standout performance from Danger and his feathered midfield cohort flattered a patchy effort elsewhere. Coach CR will be grateful that Pav’s beheading skills are still a little rusty.

Mount Beauty Uglies 1138 def by Wagga Wagga Wombats 1344

With “match of the round” being spruiked from the highest peaks to the deepest burrows, all eyes were on this heavyweight match-up. Unfortunately, the Uglies were hit with a smattering of late outs with Bennell, KK and Reid all struggling due to missing the pre-season Arizona trip. Most telling was the low number of centuries among the Mt Beauty camp, one is pretty low right? On the flip-side, the visitors racked up 5 tons and a few 90’s for good measure to ice this one early. Nice showings from Gibbs, Shiel, Prestia and Bob Murphy were backed up by new-comers Oliver and Picken off the bench. The woes continue for the Uglies with Sidey off for a two week hair-sampling holiday.

Nunawading Nuffers 1161 def by Gariwerd Cockatoos 1325

With a number of team mates still partying hard from the night before, the Nuffers stumbled onto the field with their interchange nowhere to be seen. Despite the mismatch, the Cockies were unable to take the ascendancy early with Miller and Walker stifled by a no-nonsense Nunawading backline lead by Simpson and Wood. Nic Nat and Hickey battled out an epic ruck war around the ground...
