For those who take it way too seriously
<p class='western' style='margin-bottom: 0cm;]Last week I presented some graphs looking at how winning margin and SuperCoach points were related at the team level. Because you TSers are a cluey bunch there were some great comments, which I really enjoyed reading. One of the interesting points raised was whether more points for a team meant anything for the SuperCoach relevant players in that team. Essentially this is a question of how the extra points get distributed with in the team. Do they get evenly shared across all players? Or do the gun players only alone get this extra boost?
<p class='western' style='margin-bottom: 0cm;]
<p class='western' style='margin-bottom: 0cm;]But before we look into that lets look at some extra data that we didn't see last week. Here's how the total SC points were distributed across the 2013 season
<p class='western' style='margin-bottom: 0cm;]The first thing you'll notice is that the top teams are not separated by a wide margin. North leads the way, but is only 53 points (0.01%) ahead of Hawthorn. This equates to an average of 2.4 extra points per game (or 0.1 points per player per match).
<p class='western' style='margin-bottom: 0cm;]Not exactly an impressive difference.
<p class='western' style='margin-bottom: 0cm;]
<p class='western' style='margin-bottom: 0cm;]But as we move down the list the gap does get bigger. At the half way point we find that Carlton are 1,506 points behind (3.1 points / player / match). And at the bottom, Melbourne are 5,976 points off the pace, averaging out to a sizable 12.3 points / player / match.

<p class='western' style='margin-bottom: 0cm;]
<p class='western' style='margin-bottom: 0cm;]This may not seem like much, and the main take-home-message is clearly that very shit teams get a lot less points. But this shouldn't...

Byes out of the way ... details below, but 10 rounds into the season it is becoming interesting to see how the team composition has developed:

On the plus side, the byes are finished!
I'll be honest. I love my PODs. It's a risky strategy, but one all serious SuperCoaches must adopt at some stage throughout their season. Whether it be one POD, or a handful, they can make or break your season.
So, what's a POD? Sure, you can measure it purely through percentage of ownership. Of course, you are then labelling Zac Dawson a POD; something so ludicrous that it's taken me almost half an hour to write this sentence. Of course, how many people have the player plays a part in who is classified as a POD. Especially at the start of the season where we take risks. As we progress through the season though, a POD has much more meaning than that. It's a left field choice that has the ability to rank highly in their given position. Someone that can deliver similarly to other, more popular players.
Each Friday, I'll be listing anywhere between 5 and 10 PODs for the week that should be considered as trade-in targets. These will be players that can finish within the top 15 or 20 players in their positions and are left-field choices. Some people are going for overall glory while most are trying to win their league. Either way, having a vanilla” team can only get you so far. You need good scorers that others won't have. It's what can make or break your season.
I won't be picking players based completely on their prices. It's mainly based on their output so far or their potential output from here on in. Value is important in SC, but the best place for that is reading BB's weekly article, Best Buys”. Here, it's all about getting those points from your PODs!
Let's get stuck in.
Rory Sloane (Adel) - Mid - $574,000 -112.2 - 2.72%
Sloane's consistency has been incredible in 2014. He hasn't scored below 102 this season; something only the top SC players have been able to achieve. One of the best things about Rory is that he doesn't need to have 30 touches to score well. Twice this season, he has picked up 18 disposals, 7...

Finally, we're seeing the last of the byes this week. I want a show of hands- who's got a fully upgraded team yet?
I know in DT, where I'm going well I do- but SC is still a week or two away.
Also- Port vs Hawthorn. I am *so* looking forward to this game. Can I get a quick straw pole in the comments on who's gunna win?

From a hindsight perspective the 3 bye-round have to be treated as a block, as running it before the completion of all 3 rounds will be meaningless. As such there was no Hindsight SC round 8 last week and there will be no Hindsight SC round 9 this week, but next week will be a big one covering all 3 bye rounds.
Some of you have envisioned ginormous matrices, some have even tried brute force calculations in the past and some have just expressed an interest in how 'the math' actually works. I'll lift the veil a bit ...
Statistics
First of all, the statistics. Without them the math is just a theoretical excercise and initially this looked liked the biggest roadblock. Luckily walesy came through with the goods and now I collect them on a weekly basis from the TooSerious website. I'm only collecting the weekly salaries and scores of the players (having already done the once-off setup of the full list of players and their positions including dual position players); all other stats are interesting but of no use for Hindsight SC.
Knapsack
As mentioned in my round 2 post, in essence of the whole game of SuperCoach is a traditional knapsack problem, i.e. 'given a set of items, each with a mass and a value, determine the items to include in a collection so that the total weight is less than or equal to a given limit and the total value is as large as possible':
<ul style='margin-left: 40px;]

Items = Players

Mass = Salary

Value = Score

Limit = Salary Cap

This gives the following basic model:
<p style='margin-left: 40px;]MAX SUM over [Players] of [Selected Player] * [Player Score]
<p style='margin-left: 40px;]SUBJECT TO
<ul style='margin-left: 80px;]

SUM over [Players] of [Selected Player] * [Player Salary] <= [Salary Cap]

[Selected Player] in {0,1}

The byes are almost over now, thankfully, and after a mass of high scores last week saw many teams with a 400+ point differential between the opening two bye rounds for me it can't come soon enough. SuperCoach is always a game of chance, but these bye rounds really seem to magnify that dramatically. This week we look at some of the better options going around the traps in an effort to give tooserious teams a leg-up on the competition, and unfortunately have to look at some 1 game rookies to fill it out. Hartung is the only rookie option on the bubble this week, prior to team announcements anyway, so this week could be the one many coaches take a risk.
Ducky is this week's Best Buy, after avoiding Crowley on the weekend and pumping out a 140 in his first game back after the bye. Looking at his numbers from last season, it was around this time that he really started to hit his stride and average 130+ for the remaining games. On top of that, he's as cheap as you'll likely find him, except for maybe last week, and offers excellent value all round.

ROOKIES

<p style='margin-bottom: 0pt;]Jed Bews (GEE) DEF 123.9k 60
<p style='margin-bottom: 0pt;]Bews hasn't made it onto the bubble just yet, having played just the one game last round for 60 points. As always caution is advised when looking at players who haven't played their first 2 games yet, but with no real rookie options to pick from a fair few coaches will be looking to take a punt with a second gamer this week and Bews is the man in defense. Has the potential to be a good player but will struggle to keep a spot in the 22.
MID-PRICERS

<p style='margin-bottom: 0pt;]Brodie Smith (ADE) DEF 461.5k 96
Smith continues his rise to fame, now averaging 96 for the season with a healthy price of around 460 grand. With only 4,000 selections for the season so far and a price rise of around 25 grand on the way...
