Round 14 Date Friday 12.07.2019 – AFL Round 17 THEME: Late Withdrawal-Doughnut Round If Allan Jeans thought footballers were sausages, then it is pretty clear what missing players are. Doughnuts. Lovely, round, doughy doughnuts. And no matter what sort of doughnut that missing player or late withdrawal may be – iced, jam, cinnamon or one of those fancy-schmancy custard filled treats that block important arteries – one thing’s for sure … chomping down on a doughnut in fantasy football carries with it a very bitter taste indeed. May this round bring with it no player doughnuts, but many iced doughnuts - preferably with sprinkles. The Nuffers will be depending on a strong home ground advantage as they look to spring an upset on a Lefties @That KI Guy team that appears to be superior by 20-50 ppg (depending on whether Archie Smith gets a run) based on 2019 averages. The coaching committee was debating the merits of getting the groundstaff to over-water the pitch into a literal bog then parking the bus and playing for a nil all draw. Then we realised that result could put the Spelunkers into 18th position so we may have to revisit that idea and come up with a better one.

The Round 14 game between the Cradle Mountain Devils and the Iron Knob Codpieces looks set to go down to the wire with the progress score being: Hosts, the Iron Knob Codpieces 1127/13 @ 86.7 vs Cradle Mountain Devils 1,052/12 @ 87.7 It is effectively IKC 75 + Jack Macrae + Robbie Gray vs CMD Tim English + Daniel Rich + Dayne Zorko @jimbowan is wishing that the round lived up to its name, the first half of it anyway, not the second half as the round name is Late Out-Doughnout Round. Amazingly the four IKC emergencies have combined for 488 points comprised of AMT (135) who played for the Devils last season, Brody Mihocek (122), Hunter Clark (120) and Shaun Burgoyne (111), however IKC didn’t have any late outs so none of the four scores have counted to the club’s tally. Only one IKC player in the 15 scored more than 110 - midfielder Ricky Henderson with 126. As JC noted in the Round 13 review “Things are ticking along nicely for the Devils who have arrived at 12-1 with minimal fuss.” However the tide might be starting to turn for the Devils who suffered two important in-game injuries to CMD best and fairest winners, the captain Scott Pendlebury who suffered a finger injury but played out the game to score 119 and at this stage be in the Les W medal votes. Key defender Michael Hurly suffered a shoulder injury in the third quarter and took no further part in the game, scoring 32. In the first 13 rounds of the season the Devils closest game is 80 points, with a loss by this margin to the Venus Bay Vultures in Round 2 and a win by this margin in Round 5 against the Lovely Bank Lilacs. Whatever the result of this weekends game it looks highly likely that the Devils are going to have their closest game of the season to date against the Iron Knob Codpieces
