There are. They require us to spend $1M on the academy, and then compete on a basis of 80c to the dollar on the assets we grew ourselves against Eddie and his lot.
GWS will only pick thier own academy guys this year. Best bet would be for the AFL to have 18 academies rather than stifle attempts to grow the recruit base..

Talia had zero marketable worth after the shit went down, so we sent him to Sydney to make sure than Adelaide couldn't pick him up in the PSD.

Only meaningful trade was pick 11 for 20 and 21. As long as Dalrymple is correct in his assessment that the difference between the quality available at 11 and 20 is negligible, we end up improving our 3rd pick from the middle of the third round to the start of the second round. However, if there is a jet who slips through to 11 unexpectedly, our trade for 20/21 is a bust.

Glad we didn't sell the farm for a mediocre ruckman. We have those already.

mate I don't have a problem at all with the academies but am less than convinced that all 18 teams need them (particularly the vics)

the bidding/points system is much fairer than when Father sons had a set (3rd round??) value or when you could match a pick with a later pick but there was no draft penalty later on as in recent years (Melbourne picking Viney at 10) so I have no doubt things are improving

my issue is the trading of picks to create points, if you can turn $100 into $105 once and make a $5 profit that in my view is unfair but fair enough if it is only once, then you can potentially do it again half a dozen times and end up with a $30 profit

if it were me and I was Gold Coast I would have been trading Pick 3 for Pick 6 (and lower picks) then Pick 6 for say Pick 8 (and lower picks) then Pick 8 for say Pick 10 (and lower picks) and so on through the trade period.

Teams could end up matching picks and having better trade selections or future year points position than they would have had left without trading. No doubt in a year or 2 the rules will be tweaked or tightened once the AFL sees how it plays out and non academy clubs complain.

The problem is the obvious unbalance in their formula. Under no circumstance should pick 23 and 25 be worth pick 8.

But, if it does help to grease the wheels of trade week, and make more win-win-win situations in the trades, then I'm ok with it. :D

Dogs have a fantastic recruiting division. Reckon they've made the right call on it.

      The thing about Geelong though.

      In: Danger, Henderson, Smith, Selwood.
Out: Gore, Jansen, Walker, Simpson, Johnson (+ dropped/ret), Blease, Kelly, Hartman, McIntosh, Rivers, Stokes, Toohey

So that's 8 spots on their list that they need to fill. And their first draft pick is pick 67. And they don't have their first rounder for next year.

On pure drive for next year, they won- but long term, maybe not?

In your slippery slope scenario where does Gold Coast stop?

Because if they keep going on and on to the third round, they'll need six of them to get past the value of that Pick 3. I don't really see that as feasible or practical.

And this is ignoring that the worth of picks in trade is not equal to the worth of picks in bidding.

Also agree with Len irt Academies. AFL kowtowing to media frenzy whipped up by certain people with vested interests. The only problem I have with them is the zoning of the Riverina which is a bit of a joke really.

Yeah, this whole win/lose business with trading can get in the bin.

      Bulldogs first three are P20, 21, 30.

30 isn't at the start of the second round.

Bit disingenuous to list rookie like Toohey there. Hartman was gone early so not like they could do anything there.

Likely just play with a 38 senior list, 6 rookies and get a couple of Cat B guys too (like Blicavs was).

Don't think they'll take more than 4 picks in ND and if they do then it hardly matters much as they'll picking after themselves as all the other teams will be finished. :D
