I would be getting on the phone to Hawthorn right now if I was the others clubs. They are over a barrel trying to get JOM and looks like will do anything to get him.

Losing Mitchell for spare change, ffs. As much as their trading is talked up I think it's a lot of hindsight bias (per the recent trades, Silk for Williams was awesome) because of the premierships. Eg McEvoy helped with the 3-peat but Saints walked away with theft in that trade deal. Like the T.Boyd deal. At least the Brad Hill deal was good (thanks arbitrary AFL FA compensation) though.

Not quite a Duck if the other party was a staffer and not a team mate's missus?

I agree that trade looks way overs just to get pick 10 to trade to the Suns for JOM.

Surely if you want to overpay in a trade in that situation it is with the Suns and not a 3rd party ??

The trading for picks by the Hawks is interesting. There are formulae that tell you what the trades are "worth" - a win to the Saints. Simple, except they remind me of the definition of an Accountant. One who know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

If O'Meara were injury free at the start of next year and plays to potential what is he worth? Way more that pick 10 and the add ons. That is value. The cost ("overpaying for a trade pick") is irrelevant if that were to happen. I think there is a real chance that O'Meara, Titich and the remaining top line Hawks - along with some potentially excellent youngsters - will go deep next year. If injuries bite, maybe not even top 8. But a rejuvenated Hawks team could be deep in the mix for mine.

The trade of Sam Mitch is fine in my book. You should have respect for a champion. But when he is ready, having seen another coaching approach, he will replace Clarkson. And I suggest be in a position to do much better than the one club guys like Buckley, Voss and Hird.

Yeah, not quite as juicy. Still, rating highly on the juic-o-scale however.

      I agree.

People complain mercilessly when that exact same formula is used by the academy teams to draft their academy players, claiming that the lower picks are worth too much.

Suddenly a team "overpays" with the lower picks, and they've been barrelled. Can't have it both ways!!

I never mentioned any formulas. You can overpay in a trade and still have it work. See McEvoy, Tom Boyd et all.

If JOM plays like his potential pre-injuries was indicating and helps extend the premiership window that will be a great pay off of Hawks. If he's a shadow of his former self or redoes an injury than losing several high picks for 2 drafts and at least one player will hurt them severely in the long term.

It's a big call to make. Will define Wrighty's legacy imo.

Agree with you completely port. I was suggesting the commentators / fans who say "two bags of x is equal to three bags of y" therefore the trade of picks is unbalanced, miss the bigger picture you so beautifully depicted.

Ah ok, I getcha now, graeme. Yeah, using the ranking points for draft picks that the AFL use to judge academy or f/s picks and applying it to trades is a bit disingenuous.

Sounds like the Dees are making moves this period.

Hibberd, Lewis, Rocky, Tippett. Dunno how they get it all done though!

yesterday was a yawn, hope there are some moves today and tomorrow rather than just the late flurry on Thursday prior to the deadline

      Ask and thee shall receive.

      GC - Hanley 67
      Bris - Ports Future 1st, Pick 22
      Port - Pick 19 30

The hell are Port thinking? They gotta finish top 4 to come close to breaking even in that trade. Got a chance to turn a bad year into an absolute shocker with this one!

Jordan Lewis to Dees for free essentially, wow, salary cap pressure must be huge

I suspect that is quite likely, although I hold out hope the Hawks are freeing up space for player/s at the end of 2017 and as remaining veterans retire.

Although I have bias, I don't think this is a bad move from Port. Getting 2 second rounders in a deep pool and still retaining pick 9 this year, feels good. Re trading next years' 1st rounder, I'd think that making finals would be more than enough to break even here.
