The Lake St Clair Devils and Vivonne Bay Valkeries both enter the 2022 ORFFW Grand Final in form,
having each posted 770 plus scores in their last two games. On the road the Valkeries defeated Manildra Mystix 773 to 711 in a preliminary final to continue their fairytale run to the big dance. The Devils at home defeated Katanning Krushers 784 - 677 in their PF to book a Grand Final berth.

In 2022 the Devils won the minor premiership for the third consecutive season. Coached by @That KI Guy the Valkeries on the other hand made one giant leap from wooden spooners in 2021 to become a finalist and post the equal best win loss record of six wins and two losses in 2022.

    Last time they met
    Round 3 2022
Lake St Clair Devils 625 defeated by Vivonne Bay Valkeries 668

Beating 2022 ORFFW Grand Final hosts Lake St Clair Devils on their home ground is one of the most difficult tasks in ORFFW football and only one team achieved that feat during the 2022 home and away season, their Grand Final opponents the Vivonne Bay Valkeries.

The Devils and Valkeries each won their first two games of the 2022 ORFFW home and away season.
When they met in Round 3 Vivonne Bay stamped themselves as a genuine contender in the ORFFW by upsetting Lake St Clair by 43 points in a defensive battle. The Valkeries narrowly won the 50 plus score count seven to six with Vivonne Bay midfielder Tyla Hanks (82) best afield with 16 disposals, eight tackles and two goals.

    Lake St Clair Devils 625
Best players - Monique Conti (78), Jasmine Garner (65), Catherine Phillips (59), Sarah Allen (56), Emma King (53)

    Vivonne Bay Valkeries 668
Best players - Tyla Hanks (82), Rebecca Webster (72), Mikala Cann (61), Nicola Barr (59), Olivia Fuller (59)

Later on a post will be made looking at the composition of the Devils and Valkeries GF teams

Lake St Clair Devils Grand Final team

Out: Rebecca Miller (omitted), Eden Zanker (quad)
    In: Emma King, Kellie Gibson

Def: Meghan McDonald, Sarah Allan, Georgia Garnett (Rebecca Miller)
Mid: Jasmine Garner, Monique Conti, Kirsty Lamb, Emma Swanson (Olivia Vesely)
Ruc: Emma King (Hannah Dunn OOP)
Fwd: Darcy Vescio, Aishling Sheridan, Kellie Gibson (Georgie Rankin OOP)
Int: Lily Mithen, Catherine Phillips (Courtney Jones)

Lake St Clair have made two changes for their Grand Final against the Valkeries including one forced change. Ruck Emma King has passed a fitness test on her ankle and returns to the side, replacing Rebecca Miller who filled in admirably in the ruck during the preliminary final victory. Devils F1 Eden Zanker is out due to a quad injury and has been replaced by Kellie Gibson.

    Great preview @dmandrews

With McEvoy cleared to play, Valks will take an unchanged lineup for the third consecutive week.

Def - Pugh, Stannett, Barr (van Dyk)
Mid - Webster, McNamara, Hanks, Prepaskis (Bullas)
    Ruck - Hickey (Fuller)
Fwd - McEvoy, Harris, Woodland (Ballard)
    IC - Purcell, Cann (Hyde)

Here’s hoping for a brutal and competitive Grand Final.

2022 ORFFW Grand Final Preview (part 2) - Lake St Clair Devils vs Vivonne Bay Valkeries

The Lake St Clair Devils and Vivonne Bay Valkeries have each had seven wins and two losses in 2022 to progress to the ORFFW Grand Final, both clubs suffered these losses back to back. The Devils first loss of the season was inflicted by the Valkeries to the tune of 43 points in Round 3, more detail on this game is provided in Part 1 of the Grand Final preview. The following week Lake St Clair’s nemesis Manildra Mystix defeated the Devils by 85 points in Round 4. Vivonne Bay suffered their first loss for the season in Round 4 with Bangalow Bats defeating the Valkeries by 91 points. In Round 5 the Katanning Krushers defeated Vivonne Bay by 91 points.

It is rare for a side to finish in the bottom two one season and win the premiership the next season, the fairytale that Vivonne Bay Valkeries will complete if they defeat the Devils in the Grand Final however we are not in uncharted territory from a league or coaching perspective. After the Scone Sirens finished 11th out of 12 teams on the 2020 ORFFW ladder they catapulted to finish fourth at the end of the 2021 h & a season and won a thrilling Grand Final against Manildra Mystix to win the 2021 ORFFW premiership. @That KI Guy has been the coach in a similar rags to riches story, guiding the Larrikin Lagoon Lefties from 17th out of 18 ORFFA teams in 2014 up to eighth at the end of the 2015 h & a season and on to winning back to back ORFFA premierships in 2015 and 2016.

Whilst @That KI Guy and @dmandrews have coached against each other in two leagues, the ORFFA and ORFFW this is the first season that both their teams have finished in the top 8 of the ORFFA or top four of the ORFFW. Teams coached by @dmandrews have also won two premierships, Lake St Clair Devils in 2020, followed by Cradle Mountain Devils in 2021. Whilst Lake St Clair Devils have achieved most things in the ORFFW they are yet to win a Grand Final. Due to COVID no finals were played in 2020 and the LSC Devils were awarded the premiership due to finishing the home and away season on top of the ladder.

Both 2022 Grand Final combatants enter the big dance in excellent form with the Valkeries having won four consecutive games whilst the Devils have a five game winning sequence. Vivonne Bay have an unchanged side for the third week in a row. LSC Devils have made two changes with Ruck Emma King recovering from an ankle injury and replacing Rebecca Miller. Forward Eden Zanker is out due to a quad injury and has been replaced by Kellie Gibson.

Lake St Clair won their third consecutive minor premiership in 2022 and have largely stuck to the same formula as previous seasons with only two players from their winning preliminary final side last weekend having been recruited in this season’s pre-season draft – defender Georgia Garnett (pick 34) and forward Darcy Vescio (pick 10). Exceptional drafting by @That KI Guy at this season’s PSD was a major catalyst for the Valkeries rise in 2022 with the club recruiting five members of their winning preliminary final side at this season’s PSD – Georgie Prespakis (pick 1), Nicola Barr (pick 13), Eliza McNamara (pick 25), Laura Pugh (pick 37), Ash Woodland (pick 62).

Vivonne Bay Valkeries have an extremely even side with nine players in their 13 player Grand Final side having a 2022 season average in a 13 point range from 50 points to 63 points, the two players above this range are midfield duo Tyla Hanks (76) and Rebecca Webster (74), with the VBV D2 and D3 each averaging 44. The Valkeries will have the highest averaging defender – Barr (50) and forward – Tayla Harris (54) in the Grand Final.

Lake St Clair Devils have a far greater variation from their best player to their worst player and rely heavily on their midfield. Of the 26 players to take the field in the 2022 ORFFW Grand Final the players ranked one to five for season to date average are all Lake St Clair midfielders – Emma Swanson (89), Monique Conti (89), Jasmine Garner (84), Kirsty Lamb (82) and Lily Mithen (79).

At either end of the ground it is a very different story with Vivonne Bay’s D1 to D3 and F1 to F3 all having a higher season to date average than their Lake St Clair counterpart. This is exacerbated by Devils usual F1 Eden Zanker (average of 48) missing the GF due to a quad injury. The Devils have the only five players in the Grand Final that have averaged less than 44 points per game in 2022 comprised of two defenders and all three forwards.

The Lake St Clair Devils have the advantage of the home crowd behind them and have more big game experience however there will be no shortage of confidence for Vivonne Bay Valkeries, having already recorded an upset victory in the Devils Den earlier in 2022, setting up a high quality closely fought 2022 ORFFW Grand Final.

Some late changes to the Lake St Clair Devils squad, the major change is that Cat Phillips is a late out at Int 2 and has been replaced by Courtney Jones.

Have been at Arden Street watching a quartet of Devils in action performing well.

Will post progress scores of the ORFFW GF tonight.

Progress score of 2022 ORFFW Grand Final

Lake St Clair Devils 738/11 Average of 67.1 with defender Sarah Allan and midfielder Kirsty Lamb still to play
    lead
@That KI Guy 's Vivonne Bay Valkeries 550/9 Average of 61.1 with defenders Laura Pugh and Angelique Stannett along with ruck Tahlia Hickie and forward Ashleigh Woodland to take the field tomorrow

    Lake St Clair Devils
Out: Rebecca Miller (omitted), Eden Zanker (quad) Catherine Phillips (managed)
In: Emma King, Kellie Gibson, Courtney Jones

Def: Meghan McDonald 23, Sarah Allan, Georgia Garnett 67 (Rebecca Miller)
Mid: Jasmine Garner 134, Monique Conti 55, Kirsty Lamb, Emma Swanson 88 (Olivia Vesely)
    Ruc: Emma King 47
Fwd: Darcy Vescio 24, Aishling Sheridan 78, Kellie Gibson 64 (Zoe Prowse OOP)
Int: Lily Mithen 112, Courtney Jones 46 (Georgie Rankin)

    Vivonne Bay Valkeries
    No Change

Def - Pugh, Stannett, Barr 70 (van Dyk)
    Mid – Webster 52, McNamara 42, Hanks 82, Prepaskis 92 (Bullas 53)
    Ruck - Hickie (Fuller)
Fwd – McEvoy 46, Harris 30, Woodland (Ballard)
    IC – Purcell 57, Cann 79 (Hyde)

The season to date form has rung true in the Grand Final resulting in a smaller variance in performance across the Valkeries team than the Devils outfit who have registered two of the three sub 40 scores in the game.

Vivonne Bay have registered six 50’s from nine players led by this season’s ORFFW PSD number one draft pick Georgie Prespakis (92), fellow midfielder Tayla Hanks (82) and int 2 Mikala Cann (79). Seven of Lake St Clair’s 11 players have scored 50’s and the Devils have the only two tons of the game which has given them the ascendancy – midfielder and LSC captain Jasmine Garner (134) along with Int 1 Lily Mithen (112).

The Valkeries trail by 188 points but have two more players to take the field tomorrow.

In the early game defender Sarah Allen plays for the Devils opposed to forward Ashleigh Woodland for the Valkeries

The middle game sees Lake St Clair midfielder Kirsty Lamb in action against Vivonne Bay ruck Tahlia Hickie

In the final game the Devils will watch from the club rooms as Valkeries defenders Laura Pugh and Angelique Stannett will attempt to chase down the target and guide Vivonne Bay to a fairytale victory.

Hats off to Garner and Mithen, that’s some serious game.

In the middle game on Sunday Vivonne Bay ruck Tahlia Hickie scored 45 points and midfielder Kirsty Lamb added 39 points for Lake St Clair. @That KI Guy ’s Valkeries have reduced the Devils lead to 143 points.

LSC Devils are all out for 795. Vivonne Bay are 652/11 with defenders Laura Pugh and Angelique Stannett needing to score 144 points between them to surpass the Devils total.
