Welcome to Round 1 of the 2023 Premier League. Another fun year of unexpected wins and expected losses, some brilliant individual and team performances and overall lots of fun and banter!

Round 1 sees some fantastic matchups after the recent draft, coupled with the move this year to positions being set by AWFL Fantasy resulting in some significant changes to the look of some of the teams.

Korean Kickers @Chloe (8th last year) vs Lima Llamas @hoschke118 (runners up last year)
The Kickers will once again be heavily reliant on AFLW Fantasy scoring machine Kiara Bowers who reguarly racks up big numbers, supported this year by improvement from young guns Ella Roberts and Mikayla Bowen, while last years runners up improve their squad with some handy additions in defence (Alex Ballard & Sarah Goodwin) to run with their strong midfield including Emily Bates and Jasmine Garner.

Vancouver Vultures @Athos123 (7th last year) vs Stuttgart Storm @Jono Steven (5th last year)
Two sides that finished out of the 4 last year will be looking to move up the ladder this year. The Vultures bulked up their midfield at the draft to couple guns Hayley Miller, Jaimee Lambert and Chelsea Randall and Kate Hore in attack, while the Storm will be hoping for a bit more luck than last year, with their strong midfield including Ash Riddell and Alyce Parker to be helped by a miserly defence that includes Lucy McEvoy and Breanna Koenen

Kyoto Kruisers @FreoDockers (4th last year) vs Lagos Royal @Peter W (6th last year)
The Kruisers get to start the season at home which they hope will springboard a strong campaign, lead by a newly put together Bri Davey & Maddy Prespakis in the middle with Alice Edmonds controlling the air. The Royals were unlucky last year to lose some they could well have won, and the coaching staff is once again expecting big things from Ebony Marinoff and young guns Ellie McKenzie, Hannah Ewings and Charlie Rowbottom

Majorca Islanders @TheTassieHawk (Premiers!) vs Darmstadt Dynamos @WillH_VI (3rd last year)
The Islanders get to unfurl their premiership flag in front of their adoring home crowd in what could be the match of the round with 2 consistently high scoring teams from last year. The same is expected again of the Islanders once again lead by their formidable midfield including Ellie Blackburn, Ally Anderson and Anne Hatchard while the Dynamos hopes of an away win rest with Mon Conti, Georgie Prespakis and Chloe Molloy, but it will be returning trio of Bec Beeson, Tyanna Smith and Britt Bonnici that could be the difference this year

    ---

last time these teams met was Round 7 of the 2022B season

Hi all, had to do my team on my phone due to being in transit, looks like my emergencies didn't save and I haven't been able to update them due to lockout.

Sorry to not put up a full team, I think it might cost me round 1 unfortunately as Hampson hasn't been named. Was hoping to have Phillips as Forward emergency and Charlton as Interchange emergency.

cheers @Athos123 we have reassigned the 5 emergencies you had named as at round lockout across 3 lines across the 5 lines

this may or may not provide cover, but fingers crossed it does if required, good luck !

As at Saturday night Majorca 8/588 leads Darmstadt 6/439 @WillH_VI

The Sunday 105pm timeslot sees 2 players apiece at a game which will be attended by the Majorca coach and his Dad, then Darmstadt will attempt to wrestle back the lead via a 4 to 2 advantage at 305pm.

Isabella Lewis and Aisling McCarthy will complete proceedings for the hosts and visitors respectively and will know what is required to secure the 4 points for their side in what is shaping as a tight finish to this opening round match.

Half time in the Kruisers v Royals @Peter W game sees the Kruisers 9/738 (ave 82) slightly ahead of the Royal 8/561 (ave 70.1). Both teams midfields have already been played so it will be to the fwds and defenders to bring their respective teams home

Unofficial scores have Stuttgart Storm 868 defeating the Vancouver Vultures 705 @Athos123

The Vultures played a strong defensive game with Tarni Evans (88) and Emma Kearney (75) leading the way, and some powerhouse forwards Chelsea Randall (64) and Kate Hore (76) delivering. But they were unfortunately let down through the middle with Dalton (16), Miller (54) and Lambert (44) failing to fire in Rd 1 (Dowrick's 87 notwithstanding).

Stuttgart's consistent midfield troop of Ash Riddell (105), Mikala Cann (95 - INT), Abbie McKay (86) and Alyce Parker (81) helped deliver the win, along with an impressive Storm debut from Laura Gardiner (100) up forward. But a few passengers around the ground will need to step up as the season progresses!

Unofficial results put the Lima Llamas as winners over the Korean Kickers in round 1 with a score of 925 to 808.

Garner (120), Strom (112), Bates (106) and Swanson (104) starred for the llamas. The Kickers were hurt by injuries, including the late out of superstar Bowers. Svarc (90) and Mia King (88) scored best in a very even team performance (lowest score 44)

I'm happy to do the Round 4 thread
