Thanks for hosting @tassiehawk, shame we couldn't bring a closer contest on the field. The bus is headed back home tonight after the team were given an extra day for recovery and sightseeing! Look forward to the return match up later in the year!
Our pleasure @ViQBoZ If we do meet again this season it will be in the ORFFF finals and I would be hoping it would be the Qualifying Finals, Prelim or the Granny rather than in the 2nd week or the Eliminations Finals. In any case we would be hoping to be the hosts rather than the visitors but whatever happens happens. Good luck for the next 3 weeks up to the MSD.
Thanks once again to the Noahs (@That KI Guy) for the game in Round 10. The 29ers smashed out the 3rd best losing score in ORFFF history but as they say a loss is a loss and particularly so when the Noahs who responded with a brutal 1431. The 29ers backline provided the highlight with their combined 387 points that without checking would most likely be their highest combined total by a considerable margin. Unfortunately it wasn’t able to be matched by the mids who tallied up 360 points in a subdued display. The team look to have hit a level where our best is 1350-1390 however fingers crossed we could hit 1400 plus if the team all clicks at once (unfortunately 4-5 of the better teams look to be ahead in scoring potential). For the 29ers best afield was Justin Westhoff with 125 points earning him 16 votes in the B&F (doubled as a forward eligible player). The 32 votes takes the Hoff to the outright lead in the B&F, overtaking Joel Selwood who has had a 3 week quiet patch. Next was Cotchin who scored 122 to take the 12 votes and with 12 votes moves to 3rd overall. Jarrad McVeigh opens hi account by scoring 116 which was good enough for 8 votes (doubled as a defence eleigilbe player) while James Bartel scored 109 to take the 4 votes (also doubled as a defence eleigilbe player). Black Swamp remain 4th in the ORFFF with a 6-4 record (ahead of Mole Creek on pts scored) and head to Mt Thirsty this weekend to take on the 15th placed Boozers who are a better team than their ladder position suggests. @leematty1 will no doubt be keen to win this one. The team caught a mid-morning jetboat ride to Port Lincoln on Monday and arrived at Coorabie (SA) on Monday night (staying at Coorabie Farm accomodation) ahead of a team bonding exercise scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. As I am writing two 12 person teams (Yellow and Green) are braving the elements in a 32km overland compass and map guided trek from 2 drop off points in Wagunyah Conservation Park with the first team to arrive in Yalata SA taking out the challenge. The losers will each be subjected to a 3 minute cage fighting sparring session with Jack "Slapper' Viney and hopefully at least 4 or 5 are fit enough to line up for us at the weekend. After tending to the injured we will be staying at the Nundroo Motel on Wednesday night. On Thursday night we have organised a joint training session at Coolgardie with the mighty Prospectors of the ORFFU (@JPK) and after a post lunchtime departure we will arrive in Mt Thirsty ahead of the match on Friday evening. Black Swamp Football Club B&F Top 10 after Round 10 The Hoff – 80 Joel Selwood - 66 Cotchin – 56 The Bont - 48 James Kelly - 44 Bartel – 40 Jack "Slapper" Viney - 38 Sinclair, Puopolo and Barlow - 32 (Shaun Grigg – 20, McVeigh and Ben Brown – 16 and Jack Newnes - 4 have also polled)
On behalf of the Prospectors, we look forward to welcoming the 29ers to Coolgardie, for some footy, some snags, and the best oranges in the land! We also hope to have the good luck of previous 29ers practice matches rub off on us, because we could really use it!!! Cheers to @TheTassieHawk and everyone from the Black swamp Football Club.
The 29ers "midweek challenge" was a mixed success. As a team bonding exercise it was great, with the players making a blood oath to give their all and take no shortcuts in their pursuit of ORFFF glory. Team selection wise it was a failure. James Kelly managed to develop general soreness and is therefore rested. Next year we will remember to rest the 30 pluses or hold the challenge in the midseason break. Team Yellow lost and in giving a beatdown to Trent Cotchin in his 3 minute sparring session Jack Viney managed to break a knuckle on Trent's recently reconstructed forehead and will be out for an extended period rather than the 1 week he copped from the ORFFF tribunal as a result of repeated white line fever. With his break now extended Jack has vowed to provide plenty of revenue to the Mt Thirsty bar this weekend, 29ers management takes no responsibility whatsoever for anything that may follow. The 29ers combined training session with Coolgardie (@JPK) was much smoother. Justin Westhoff sat out as being a part of both clubs the Hoff didn't want to upset either set of team-mates. Chris Masten and Jack Newnes showed plenty and will slot into the 29ers midfield for the crunch match with Mt Thirsty (@leematty1). Tom Cutler showed plenty of dash and will line up at the expense of Jarryn Geary who is dropped for team balance, as the 29ers plan to use Callum Sinclair as an extra man in defence to spoil the Boozers Twin Towers (Jroo and Charlie Dixon) then run the ball forward. We wish the Prospectors all the best for their ORFFU Derby this weekend. We are about an hour away from hitting the road to Mt Thirsty which appears to be near full strength for what should be a very tough matchup for the boys from Black Swamp.
Thanks once again to the Boozers (@leematty1) for the game in Round 11. The 29ers smashed out the 3rd best score in ORFFF history which saw them dispatch the home side despite Boozers Captain Rocky posting an ORFFF record 204 points. The 29ers managed great scores across the park including the midfield which although depleted pre-match by the loss of Viney and Kelly showed great resolve after their poor showing in Round 10. Coach TTH will have to eat his words about the inability to break 1400 points in the first 10 rounds but the challenge is now there to back it up week after week in the run home. Co-captain Joel Selwood rebounded form an uncharacteristic down patch in recent weeks to score 150 (1 off the club record) and capture 16 votes in the B&F which puts him back in front of the Hoff. Next was the Bont who scored 147 but had to settle for 12 votes in the B&F. Next was Shaun Grigg who scored 120 to take the 8 votes. For the first time this year there were 5 votegetters as the 4 votes was shared 2 apiece by Trent Cotchin and James Bartel, with Bartel’s votes again doubled as a defence eligible player). Black Swamp remain 4th in the ORFFF with a 7-4 record (a game ahead of 4 teams including Cockburn and Jan Juc) and travel back to their home patch for a vital matchup with Maralinga (@DamoH) this weekend. The 9th placed Atoms will be keen to atone for a round 11 smashing by the top ranked Dropbears. Tonight the team stops at Wudinna SA (staying at the Wudinna Motel) and after staying at Coonabarabran NSW (the Country Gardens Motel) on Tuesday night we will be arriving back in Black Swamp on Wednesday lunchtime. Training will be Thursday night only this week due to the heavy training loads and travel schedule over the past fortnight and to allow the players and WAGS to catch up as needed. Black Swamp Football Club B&F Top 10 after Round 11 Joel Selwood – 82 The Hoff – 80 The Bont - 60 Cotchin – 58 James Kelly and James Bartel - 44 Jack "Slapper" Viney - 38 Sinclair, Puopolo and Barlow - 32 (Shaun Grigg – 28, McVeigh and Ben Brown – 16 and Jack Newnes - 4 have also polled)
A tough one for my boys this week against the high-flying 29ers, but one that we really need to win to stay in touch with the 8. Looking forward to experiencing some of the famous Black Swamp hospitality in the coming days.
@DamoH - I am not sure whether the other ORFFF coaches who have been unfortunate enough to be drawn to come here would describe our hospitality as "famous" or "infamous" ! That said our fans have been well behaved of late, we aren't too certain whether that has been due to improved home form or restraining orders now in place for the Black Swamp Cheer Squad. As you were away to Drouin last week let us know when you will be arriving in town. We can recommend some great places to go trout fishing or camping nearby. If coastal R&R is more your thing then there are plenty of healthy swells on the Northern NSW and Southern Queensland beaches this week. Once you hit town you will have the choice of staying at the Tenterfield Tavern or at the Footy Club's clubrooms. Our OHS cadet is on leave this week so there will be no mandatory geigertester screening for your players prior to the game. As I only arrived back in town this arvo I haven't been fully briefed on the post match plans, but if you and the players don't mind drinking Tooheys at 1990 prices and eating fresh trout then you are probably in the right place. As both teams don't need to play the following week there could be a few more beers consumed than an average postmatch so the bar will be ordering in plenty of stock. As always we look forward to a willing onfield contest with hopes both teams will be naming strong teams Thursday or Friday.
@DamoH - I forgot to mention that unlike the 2006 West Coast Eagles the 2016 Black Swamp 29ers (and their coach) are never high, and to date have not been flying, although the latter of course is scheduled to changge with away trips to Useless Loop and Heard Island scheduled after the midseason break.
A belated thanks to @DamoH and the Atoms for the game in Round 12. Following a 2 week road trip over the previous fortnight Round 12 of the ORFFF saw the 29ers record a comprehesive home victory by an ORFFF Record 422 point margin over Maralinga. The 29ers once again managed great scores across the park and combined for 1454 overall. For the 2nd consecutive week the 2 biggest scores were from Joel Selwood and the Bont with 141 and 127 respectively securing the 16 and 12 votes in the B & F. Next best was Trent Cotchin with 114 which secured the 8 votes. Pleasingly the 4 votes (doubled as a defense eligible player) was wrapped up by young Tom Cutler with 110, which made him the 15th player to poll in this years award. Heading into the midseason break Black Swamp has moved ahead of Chinchilla into 3rd spot on the ORFFF ladder. While the first 12 rounds have been promising Black Swamp will need to do well in the draft and trade period to give them a shot at the ultimate glory this season with Drouin, Neptune Island and Cockburn looking likely to be the strongest strong chances for the flag. Black Swamp will be giving the players a short break to hit the beaches of Southern Queensland or attend to chores around the home before some running and skills sessions in Round 14 to prepare for the 3 matches to come after the ORFFF midseason break as securing a top 4 spot will be very important come seasons end. Black Swamp Football Club B&F Top 10 after Round 12 Joel Selwood – 98 The Hoff – 80 The Bont - 72 Cotchin – 66 James Kelly and James Bartel - 44 Jack "Slapper" Viney - 38 Sinclair, Puopolo and Barlow - 32 (Shaun Grigg – 28, McVeigh and Ben Brown – 16, Cutler - 8 and Jack Newnes - 4 have also polled)
Black Swamp Football Club welcomes Adam Cooney and Scott D Thompson to the 29ers as we head into the second half of the 2016 ORFFF Season. Departing the club are talented Troy Menzel and the un-talented Cam Wood. Cooney - acquired with the #13 pick in the ORFFF MSD - will wear the #34 Guernsey, as Jarryn Geary is wearing the #17 Guernsey Adam prefers. Similarly S.D.T - acquired by trade from Heard Island - will pull on the #48 as Jack Newnes is wearing his preferred #32. Both players will debut for the club in Round 13 against the Heard Island Shags (@anthak). Jack Newnes also earns a recall, as Shaun Grigg, Barlow and Cutler make way due to injury. Through the sponsorship arrangement with a mysterious Eastern European "import-export" company as announced pre-season the 29ers will be able to use charted aircraft for 50 players/coaches/staff/fans/WAGS to and from The Island. As a former Shags player Scott D Thompson will be the navigator for the trip to Tri Pot Beach. Departure will be 9am sharp on Thursday so as to arrive a few hours before the early start of the game. The club is comfortable with the sponsors requirement of carrying unspecified cargo in either or both directions (what can possibly go wrong??). Please pack your winter clothes including triple strength long-johns for the trip. The clash with Heard Island promises to be a rugged and very important test as the Shags form was very good leading into the break and they have acquired further talent through the draft and trade period.
A belated thanks to@Anthak and the Shags for the game in Round 13. Heard Island put on a weekend of fine hospitality even though the sub-freezing temperatures took some acclimatising to, even for the mountain men from New England way. The 29ers recorded a 3rd straight win to move to 9-4 and extended their points scored lead over Chinchilla to 192 with 2 roster games to play. The Bont scored 140 points to record his 3rd best player gong for the season, snag 16 B&F Votes and nudge ahead of Westhoff into 2nd overall for 2016 and 10 votes behind Joel Selwood. Next was Ben Brown who scored 122 to take the 12 votes (doubled as a forward eligible player). Jack Viney took the 8 votes with a score of 112 and Trent Cotchin scored 104 to take the 4 votes. Before scores in the Boozers and Ducks game were adjusted both Selwood and the Bont were featuring in the top 10 of the competition Best and Fairest which has been won by Drouin's Paddy Dangerfield. The Bont is now equal 10th and with a tight leaderboard at present both players are in contention to finish in the top 3 or 4 if they can finish the regular season strongly. The private charter flight over had been an overwhelming success and after a big post match feast put on by the Shags the Black Swamp travelling party stuck around until the Tuesday morning so arrived back home late on Tuesday. Black Swamp will train on Wednesday night before welcoming the visiting Port Lincoln (@MrsBear) in Round 14 ORFFF action. Black Swamp Football Club B&F Top 10 after Round 13 Joel Selwood – 98 The Bont - 88 The Hoff – 80 Cotchin – 70 Jack "Slapper" Viney - 46 James Kelly and James Bartel - 44 Ben Brown – 40 Sinclair, Puopolo and Barlow - 32 (Shaun Grigg – 28, McVeigh – 16, Cutler - 8 and Jack Newnes - 4 have also polled)
A belated thanks to @MrsBear and the Power for the game in Round 14. The 29ers recorded a 4th straight win – by a very Richie enau-esque 222 points - to move to 10-4. Despite scoring the 2nd highest round total they saw their points scored lead over Chinchilla tripped to 164 with 2 roster games to play. The loss of Michael Barlow during the game was a dampener, and was compounded with news early in the week he will be out for the reminder of the season. The Hoff scored 136 points to snag the best score and 16 B&F Votes (doubled as a forward eligible player) and with another monster score in the bag he has surged into the lead for the season. Joel Selwood scored 128 and took the 12 votes, and is only 2 votes behind with a minimum of 2 games left for the 29ers. The Bont scored 121 to take the 8 votes to rank 3rd overall for the season, while Ben Brown continued his fine recent form to score 120 points and snag the 4 votes (again doubled as a forward eligible player) to move to 5th behind Trent Cotchin.. In addition, Selwood is now on 30 and the Bont 26 to feature in equal 4th and equal 7th respectively in the ORFFF Best and Fairest reflecting their standing in the competitions elite midfield bracket. Black Swamp will train on Tuesday and Thursday nights before they again catch a charter flight for a long distance away game, this week they face the 7th placed Useless Loop Virgins (@YAD69) in a match that is vital for both teams finals hopes so another willing contest is on the cards in Round 15. Black Swamp Football Club B&F Top 10 after Round 14 The Hoff – 112 Joel Selwood – 110 The Bont - 96 Cotchin – 70 Ben Brown – 48 Jack "Slapper" Viney - 46 James Kelly and James Bartel - 44 Sinclair, Puopolo and Barlow - 32 (Shaun Grigg – 28, McVeigh – 16, Cutler - 8 and Jack Newnes - 4 have also polled)
A belated thanks to @YAD69 and the Virgins for the game in Round 15. Black Swamp was dealt a defeat by the Virgins from Useless Loop 1333-1282, however the margin was flattering to the visitors. The 29ers finished the roster season on a 10-5 record which saw them finish 3rd due to the losses to the 4th and 5th placed sides in the final round. James Bartel scored 130 points to snag the best score and 16 B&F Votes (doubled as a forward eligible player). Next was Joel Selwood who regained the B&F lead with 128 pints and the 12 votes. Jack Viney scored 118 to take the 8 votes, while the Bont took the 4 votes with a 109 point effort. In addition, Selwood finished on 33 votes in the ORFFF Brownlow to finish 4th while the Bont managed 9th after a very slow start to the season. The 142 votes polled by Black Swamp was the 4th most polled by one club with Drouin leading the way with 146 votes. The votes polled by all 29ers were as follows 4 Joel Selwood 33 9 Marcus Bontempelli 26 45 Justin Westhoff 13 48 Trent Cotchin 12 59 James Kelly 10 Jack Viney 10 77 James Bartel 8 101 Ben Brown 6 111 Michael BARLOW 5 Paul PUOPOLO5 Shaun Grigg 5 129 Callum Sinclair 4 Scott D. Thompson 4 176 Josh Bruce 1 Following the charter flight home on Monday morning the players had a light kick to kick and will train again on Wednesday prior to commencing their travel for the Qualifying Final away to Neptune Island (@That KI Guy). As the 29ers have travelled to both Wedge Island and Neptune Island already this season we will be using the same travel schedule in order to arrive in good time for this week’s big match. As such we will depart on Thursday morning with all fit players required to board the team bus at the Tenterfield Tavern at 7am sharp, free brekkie will be served for players and families from 6:15am. Let your families know there is plenty of room on the bus at this stage if they wish to travel for the game - but access will be first in, first served. We will arrive in Hay NSW around 730pm and as with our Round 1 and Round 10 preparation we will have a light skills session at the local park before heading back to our accommodation at the Riverina Hotel and a team meeting followed by selection of this week’s team. The next morning we will hit the road at 7am sharp, arriving at Port Willunga around 2pm. We are travelling over to Neptune Island by jetboat so be sure to take your ASADA approved travel sickness pills by 1pm as it has been a bumpy ride each previous time. Afterwards we will be departing on the Monday morning and arrive back in Tenterfield next Tuesday, Monday night's accommodation is at the Station Motel in Parkes, unless you don't manage to crack the half ton in which case you get to sleep aboard the team bus. Black Swamp Football Club B&F Top 10 after Round 15 Joel Selwood – 122 The Hoff – 112 The Bont - 100 James Bartel – 76 Cotchin – 70 Jack "Slapper" Viney – 54 Ben Brown – 48 James Kelly - 44 Sinclair, Puopolo and Barlow - 32 (Shaun Grigg – 28, McVeigh – 16, Cutler - 8 and Jack Newnes - 4 have also polled)
A belated thanks to @That KI Guy and the Noahs for the game in last week’s Qualifying Final. Black Swamp was dealt a savage smashing by the Noahs, recording their largest ever loss as well as their lowest ever score. With Black Swamp’s 6 midfielders scoring between 60 and 85 the Noah’s were staring at an easy victory and delivered it in fine style. The match committee were initially undecided as to whether to lodge any B&F votes this week, however after due consideration they decided to which left Adam Cooney who managed 105 points as the player to poll 16 votes (doubled as a forward eligible player), and the 16th 29er to poll in the B&F. Next on 100 points was James Bartel who polled 12 votes (doubled as a defence eligible player), with the veteran moving into equal 3rd for the season, tied with the Bont. Both players have an outside chance of B&F honours but the leading pair appear to be in the box seat. The Hoff managed 8 votes (again doubled as a forward eligible player) to move into 1st position for the year, with a narrow lead over Joel Selwood as the Co-Captain polled 4 votes. The loss was the second in succession for the 29ers, and means the team will be facing a knockout match at home next week against the Virgins from Useless Loop (@YAD69). After arriving home on Tuesday, the 29ers managed a light run followed by a brutal honesty session after which Trent Cotchin’s wife would have lashed out on social media but fortunately she was unable to do so as her phone ran out of charge on the bus trip back from Neptune Island the communications work experience kid had luckily hidden Trent’s I-phone charger and the Tenterfield general store was closed at 5pm. After facing Useless Loop in Round 15 the 29ers are all too aware of the threat they pose, particularly with the Virgins heavy WCE contingent facing a depleted purple haze this weekend. As this week’s match is extremely likely to be the 29ers final home match for 2016 the Black Swamp Football Club have decided to pay tribute to it’s fan base by launching a “pay for yourself and your sister, and your mother gets in for free” promotion. As of Friday afternoon the club has been inundated with hundred’s of abusive phone calls from confused members with what can best be described as “complicated” family histories, the aforementioned communications work experience kid has been deeply traumatised as a result. In any case the Virgin's should be prepared for a hostile home crowd, particularly in the latter stages if the match could go the visitor's way. Black Swamp Football Club B&F Top 10 after Finals Week 1 The Hoff – 128 Joel Selwood – 126 The Bont, James Bartel – 100 Cotchin – 70 Jack "Slapper" Viney – 54 Ben Brown – 48 James Kelly - 44 Sinclair, Puopolo, Barlow and Cooney - 32 (Shaun Grigg – 28, McVeigh – 16, Cutler - 8 and Jack Newnes - 4 have also polled)
Thanks to @That KI Guyand the Virgins for the game in the Semi Final. Black Swamp was dealt a savage smashing by Useless Loop, recording their largest ever loss (for the second week running) despite an improved performance led by the midfield group who for the most part stood up after a disappointing collective effort the previous week. The loss was the third in succession for the 29ers – and 2nd in a fortnight against the Virgins - as they went out in straight sets in what can only be described as a disappointing end to an up and down campaign. The players and match committee have barred the media from their Mad Monday celebrations which will last until Friday the 19th such were the gate and bar takings from the home final. The 16, 12, 8 and 4 B & F votes this week went to the Bont, Viney, Grigg and Cotchin. Without further ado here are the final placings in the Black Swamp Football Club B&F 1 - The Hoff – 128 2 - Joel Selwood – 126 3 - The Bont - 116 4 - James Bartel – 100 5 - Cotchin – 74 6 - Jack "Slapper" Viney – 66 7 - Ben Brown – 48 8 - James Kelly - 44 9 - Shaun Grigg – 36 Equal 10th - Sinclair, Puopolo, Barlow and Cooney - 32 14 - McVeigh – 16 15 - Cutler – 8 16 - Jack Newnes – 4 As the first ever winner of the Justin Westhoff Medal the Hoff was quick to pay tribute to the 29ers for picking him in Round 11 of the ORFFF draft when there was firm interest from the 3 Port Adelaide supporting coaches and also for the club hierarchy for devising a B&F system that allowed a Forward averaging 86 (30th best SC average for Forwards) to edge out an all ORFFF midfielder and 4th placed player in the ORFFF Brownlow who averaged 112 (9th best SC average for Mids). Overall the top 9 in the B&F were all pleasing performers and others such as Puopolo, Cutler and Mayes were also handy late picks, but the 29ers see improvement from the other players on the list as imperative for next season. The 29ers have already farewelled Andrew Walker who retired when he was unable to make the squad at the weekend, Adam Cooney is 95% likely to retire once Mad Monday is finished and we believe that we will know Dane Swan and James Kelly’s intentions sooner rather than later. With plenty of veterans, no shows by players such as Yarran and Sheed and Hooker this season, and dubious depth in the latter stages of the season the 29ers list management in the offseason will be considered very carefully and recruiters have been scouring the Under 18’s and State Leagues for players who can make an impact within the next 1 or 2 seasons.
Commiserations @TheTassieHawk Unlucky week for you last week in our matchup. Midfield just didnt show up. Then bang! Straight into the Loopers Freight train. Don't think any of us have a chance with the Virgins in that sort of mood. btw - the ASADA approved travel sickness pills are the RED ones, not the BLUE ones which somehow seem to be in short supply now.
Further on list management our trade with Heard Island for Scott D Thompson and our 5th placed finish in 2016 leaves us with the following 2017 PSD picks Pick 12 - players taken at this pick in the 2016 ORFFL and ORFFA PSD's were - Tom Sheridan (WAR), Matthew Kennedy (MBM) Pick 28 - Andrejs Everiit (WAR), Brendan Ahchee (VBV) Pick 60 - Callum Ahchee (WOY), Bailey Williams (WKI) Pick 66 (received from Heard Island) - James Kelly (MIL), Matthew Flynn (MBM) Pick 82 (received from Heard Island) - Sam Menegola (MAL), Pass Pick 92 - Jack Trengove (TLP), Pass Given the ORFFL has the most similar structure and draft pool to the ORFFF at some stage in the offseason I will take a look at who has been picked up in previous ORFFL seasons. Please note that I may be up for trading picks for picks whenever the offseason trading period starts, particularly as I would be happy to end up with a double pick at 59/60, 60/61, 65/66 or 66/67 rather than two close together at 60 and 66.
