[span style='color: #ff0000;]Mid Season review: Charlie's Opening Summary: A bit of a roller coaster ride for the Spelunkers so far this year, with teams seeming to turn it on against them. Narrow losses to premiership contenders Waikickamoocow and Foul Bay have hurt badly, and the Spelunkers now find themselves a game out of the 8 despite having the 3rd highest total points score. A reasonable run home before the final round against raging premiership favourites Iron Knob may see the Spelunkers squeak into the 8, but the race is far from won. However with an average age of just over 24, and a great list of developing players coming through, the future is bright for the Spelunkers. Averages Average score : 1269 Average score in winning side: 1253 Average score in losing side: 1286 Average winning margin: 200 points Average losing margin : 51 points
Opposition Average score: 1194 Opposition performance vs their average score when playing the Spelunkers shows that teams tend to lift when playing against us; Even Gundagai turned it on in spite of their horrific injuries. [span style='color: #ff0000;]7 teams out of the 10 we have played have performed above their yearly average… proving that the Spelunkers have been a bit unlucky this year Cradle Mountain -140 Wagga Wagga +106 Gundagai +122 Foul Bay +30 Waikickamoocow +7 Whitsunday - 340 Nunawading -130 Mount Beauty +46 Venus Bay +134 Darraweit +140
Player review Phil Davis Games: 5 Average : 65 Rating : 4/10 Terrible form before going down with a hip injury has meant that Phil Davis' hold on the captaincy and even his future at the club is now under a cloud. Needs to find form in the second half of the year to be playing for the Spelunkers in 2014
Mark LeCras Games: 9 Average : 78 Rating : 6/10 The loyalty of Bandit to the Frenchman by carrying him through all of last season has been rewarded this year, although inconsistent performances have been frustrating. Needs to lift in a Spelunkers forward line that is misfiring (might be a bad distributor cap)
Ben Reid Games: 8 Average : 82 Rating : 7/10 Has more than held his own. Strong average and will only get better… the guy is only 24!
Josh Jenkins Games: 9 Average : 75 Rating : 6/10 Many tipped this to be the breakout year for Jenkins, but he has not quite hit it. Serviceable, but not great. The difference between good and bad games just a bit too far.
Andrew Mackie Games: 10 Average : 86 Rating : 8/10 Recruit of the off season. Not only did he bring some more WAG related eye candy to The Pit, but a cracking average and sensational consistency (only 3 scores below 70) make him a lock in the defensive half.
Sam Reid Games: 3 Average : 65 Rating : 6/10 Has struggled with both form and then when form started to turn, injury. 21 year old who is waiting to take the game apart. When Tippett starts playing this guy won't be the primary focus up forward. If he can sort out the kicking may be a sleeper for a big second half of the year
Cale Hooker Games: 7 Average : 82 Rating : 7/10 Peptides or not, has been another rock down back.
Terry Milera Games: 1 Average : 57 Rating : 4/10 Just not enough consistency in the reserves to be getting a first team spot.
Andrew Swallow Games: 10 Average : 110 Rating : 8/10 Turned 26 three days ago… 6 or so years left in this gun. Widely tipped to take over the captaincy from Davis next year. Just keeps on performing in the guts.
Daniel MENZEL Games: 0 Average : -- Rating : N/A Sadly Menzel, unlike LeCras was a gamble that did not pay off for Bandit… two more knee reconstructions later and he will be traded/delisted at the MSD.
Leigh Montagna Games: 9 Average : 107 Rating : 7/10 Take out the 67 and 82 and it is 117 over 7 games. It is the odd blip that Joey throws up that gives Bandit conniptions. Another gun midfielder who is getting on in years but still keeps churning it out.
Joshua Simpson Games: 0 Average : -- Rating : N/A Hasn't played but is very close to getting a first team call up. Highly rated, and his explosive pace is a big asset
Kieren Jack Games: 10 Average : 111 Rating : 8/10 Lynchpin of the midfield and is an out an out superstar. A player who will go on to play 100+ games for the Spelunkers. Would be in the starting midfield of any other ORFFA side.
Eric MacKenzie Games: 1 Average : 31 Rating : 5/10 MacKenzie has struggled to break into the Spelunkers backline. He is however a model of consistency, having played every game with the reserves team this year. Excellent back up to the Fab 4 of Shaw, Mackie, Hooker and Reid.
Jack Gunston Games: 5 Average :88 Rating : 6/10 Has broken into the team in recent weeks and the 21 year old has more than held his own. 3 game rolling average of 112 has Bandit licking his lips at the potential.
Drew Petrie Games: 10 Average : 102 Rating : 9/10 Has wound back the clock this year, and turned it on in scintillating fashion. Slow start to the season with a 59 against Cradle Mountain and a 59 against Gundagai, but a 178 last week and a 3 week rolling average of 129 has him being the number one forward. Not getting any younger however, so will be resource managed through the off season.
Shane Savage Games: 0 Average : -- Rating : n/a Always going to struggle to break into the Spelunkers midfield. The fact he is struggling to break into the Hawthorn side is an area of concern. Could be trade bait or delistment material.
Marco Paparone Games: 1 Average : 35 Rating : 5/10 Jury still out on Paparone. If he continues to develop his key performance indicators, could be a great pickup. Time will tell.
Daniel Jackson Games: 10 Average : 83 Rating : 7/10 Pinch hitter who has played every game for the team this year. Solid backup average and reliable performance means he will continue to get a game.
Jonathan Giles Games: 10 Average : 71 Rating : 5/10 Too early to call this a trade disaster, but Fitzy may have the laughing rights on this one. Was expected to come on but facing 2nd year slump. Hopefully the mid season break gets him right.
Stephen Hill Games: 6 Average : 85 Rating : 6/10 Clearly playing with an injury at the start of the year, but has come back after a few weeks off and lit it up on the weekend. Watch out for a big run home from the enigma that is Stephen Hill
Josh Hill Games: 7 Average : 78 Rating : 6/10 Never going to achieve greatness, but has been a very handy F4 this year. May struggle to hold down a long term spot when Reid gains full form and fitness, but a very handy backup.
Jarrad Redden Games: 0 Average : -- Rating : n/a The kid is only 22, and is starting to find his feet. Could be a smoky for a few games after the break if Giles continues his current form. At 205cm, he is a giant who has a load of potential.
Heath Shaw Games: 7 Average : 97 Rating : 8/10 Skin folds and pie eating feats aside, Heater has been faultless this year. Averaging almost a ton and just keeps getting it. May run like a duck, but who cares!
Jackson Thurlow Games: 2 Average : 58 Rating : 7/10 Wow, wow, wow. How this guy got through to 4th round has me stuffed. Is going to be a gun and looks right at home already in the Pit. Watch out for more of this lad in the back half of the year.
Liam Picken Games: 7 Average : 63 Rating : 6/10 Was brought in as bench cover and has fulfilled that role admirably. Serviceable player who has an incredible work ethic at the coal face.
Outlook The run home… based on current playing averages, the Spelunkers will win 6 of the final 7… however if we factor in that teams lift on average by 83 points against us, we will only win 3 of them. A top 8 finish is going to require the team to lift in the run home, and they will want to be fully entrenched in the top 8 come the last two rounds of the season. Round 11 - Marble Bar Round 12 - Birdsville Round 13 - Gariwerd Round 14 - Larrikin Lagoon Round 15 - Lovely Banks Round 16 - Iron Knob Round 17 - Powlett Plains
Draft period predictions The Spelunkers will be active during the trading period, but only if the deal suits them. They have their eye on a couple of players in the draft, and will be on the lookout for another playing forward. <div>

Love it! Great work. ...And I never mentioned how happy we were to see the laser beam culprits cooked. It is a shame that that happened in the first place, as the incident ultimately began the undoing of Monfries as a Cockatoo. He has certainly responded well though and has been in excellent form this year for the Lefties.

Charlie's Opening are delighted with their first trade of the Mid Season... picking up Wagga Wagga's Shaun Atley and their 2nd round draft pick in next years pre-season draft for Josh Jenkins.

Taken first round in the 2010 draft, he is a fantastic addition to the club <p style='margin-bottom: 10px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, San-Serif; font-size: 12px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; line-height: 16px; background-color: #ffffff; color: #000000;]Something you don't know about Shaun :Shaun comes from Northern Victoria... a region synonymous with mining and primary industry, so he will slot straight into the working culture at The Pit <p style='margin-bottom: 10px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, San-Serif; font-size: 12px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; line-height: 16px; background-color: #ffffff; color: #000000;]Contracts and List manager Synon Daline says: <p style='margin-bottom: 10px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, San-Serif; font-size: 12px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; line-height: 16px; background-color: #ffffff; color: #000000;]'He adds some real speed to our group. He's a real game-breaker. We are delighted to have him.'

Spelunkers hoping for some luck in the draft
Charlie's Opening enter the ORFFA mid-season draft with picks 10 and 28, and are hoping for a couple of hidden gems to slip through the cracks for the Spelunkers to pick up.
'Uncovering rare commodities is what we do at The Pit, both metaphorically and in reality' said Bandit. The second-in-charge went on to say that there are a couple of 'real players' in the draft, and he was hoping that the other teams had lost focus in the frenzy of the trading period and will drop the ball.
Only time will tell... the crowd is gathering

[span style='color: #ff0000;]Disaster narrowly averted as the selection committee come under fire again!
    Charlie's Opening 1241 defeat Birdsville 1206
Another match committee selection disaster from the Spelunkers, with Hansen and Hooker being left out of the side for Atley and Hill, costing the team 150 points and nearly costing them the match. The clash between the Birdsville forwards (Brown, Cloke, Mayne and Porps for 355) and the Spelunkers backline (Shaw, Mackie, Atley and Reid for 375) being a highlight of the game. Elsewhere Jack (138) did as he pleased, with Joey (102) and Gunston (104) providing good support for the Opening, with Ebert (109) and McEvoy (105) holding their heads high for the Battlers. In a match that went right down to the wire, a spud effort from Moloney (34) cost the Birdsville boys the win.
Next week the team travel to Gariwerd, with the home team threatening to give the Spelunkers a taste of their own medicine after the Angus Monfries laser assault last year. Hopefully Anthak and Bandit can manage to broker a cease fire

I realise its in the spirit of the party atmosphere we're going for, but you really shouldnt have let Lachie Hansen have special K for breaky on the morning of the match. He was clearly stuck in a K hole all game! He seemed to enjoy the music and the lasers, but he had no hope of finding the footy for you!

    It looks like Andrew Mackie may have been a victim of a drink spike... this image captured at the presidents lunch /Portals/0/User%20Images/704177-logan-west-leader-drink-spiking.jpg' style='width: 650px; height: 366px;
but the after party supplies have been taken care of... Lachie Hansen given the job to sort it out after getting dazed and confused on the ground by all the shiny lights... and he replaced the chocolate bars and Gatorade after the game with this:

[span style='color: #ff0000;]Spelunkers selection committee get it mostly right, but Hansen needs a 'Please Explain' after mind numbing bender on coloured pills
Gariwerd Cockatoos 1187 defeated by Charlie's Opening 1237

It was smoke machines, glow sticks, pyrotechnics and lasers everywhere on the weekend. It started off as an act of retribution from the Gariwerd faithful after Angus Monfries was the victim of a laser attack at The Pit last year, but with some fantastic collaboration between Anthak and Bandit, a potential incident was avoided and replaced by a rave party for the ages. Opening up with a cracking set from Dutch trance legend Tiesto including some old school favourites such as 'Smack my bitch up', 'Saltwater' and Goldfrapp's 'Rocket', the team were well and truly on edge when his final track (a smashing re-mix of 'Don't you worry child' by Dutch compatriots Swedish House Mafia) sent the team into a frenzy.

The team ran out onto the ground with flourescent paint on the faces, sort of a combination of Braveheart and Michael Hussey.Dan Jackson (137) revelled in the smoky conditions, with Jack Gunston (110) dealing with the reflections from the mirror ball better than most. Drew Petrie (109), Shane Savage (103) and Andrew Swallow (1010) also enjoyed extended playtime and points scoring. Stephen Hill (111) made it very clear that he preferred the higher BPM of the Carl Cox set in the second half, going berserk in the centre of the ground at every centre bounce. After the game it was evident why... everytime Kurt Tippett made a jump for the ball 'popping candy' would fall out of his pockets, and Hill would be right there to get the lions share. Hill was so feverish with his attack on the ground that he cleaned up Lachie Hansen at the first bounce, leaving Hansen dazed and confused to a point where he started seeing rainbows and other strange hallucinations. He was immediately subbed out of the game much to the annoyance of Josh Hill.

For the home team, Robbie Gray (118) and Chris Masten (116) partied hardest, Gray's haircut being accentuated with some glow in the dark highlights. The absence of a ruckman didn't help the Cockies, with their tall timber absent and last seen in a haze of suspicious smoke. The Cockies and the Spelunkers partied hard well into the following day, with the recovery session finally commencing at sunset, with some laidback tunes from St. Etienne, Lux and Massive Attack providing the perfect ambience for a massage and ice bath. It is hoped that next year when Charlie's Opening host the event that the set list and atmosphere will be even better that this year. A massive thankyou to Gariwerd for the hospitality and 'stimulants'... we hope ASADA don't come visiting any time soon. [span style='color: #ff0000;]Icy conditions make the going tough, but the Spelunkers prevail against the Lefties
Charlie's Opening Spelunkers 1412 defeat Larrikin Lagoon Lefties 1255
    Charlie's Opening put on it's best performance for the year when it mattered most, at the pointy end of the season when finals spots are up for grabs. The victory was assisted when refugee groundman Wai You Hai Ding left the sprinklers on overnight, resulting in a thick layer of ice at the Mine Shaft Road end of the ground: /Portals/0/User%20Images/frank-hurley-antarctica-carved-cave-sea.jpg' style='width: 700px; height: 531px;
The permafrost resulted in both teams being supplied extra long studs for the games, alternatively a selection of second hand ice skates and crampons recovered from Mawson Base after the team was relocated were also made available. Larrikin forwards David Hale (140) and Jordan Lewis (118) looked right at home on the skates, although the equipment fund took a bit of a hit with a few balls being pierced when checkside shots at goal were attempted. A low centre of gravity was always going to be an asset in these conditions, and Joey (145), Jack (126) and the Frenchman (101) reveled in the snow. Stephen Hill (61) was forced to play with a large dressing on his right hand, a result of an ice carving demonstration gone wrong, and his position in the team must come under scrutiny this week. Shaun Atley must be wondering what he needs to do to break into the backline, with Shaw (87, 99 avg over last 3), Mackie (97, 102/3), Reid (73, 86/3) and Hooker (95, 101/3) possessing ice cold blood flowing through their veins at the moment. Up front Petrie (125, 105/3), Gunston (82, 99/3) and LeCras (101, 90/3) are firing, but the 4th forward spot is a real challenge, with Bandit desperately hoping Sam Reid's injury woes are behind him. Hansen's performances of 116 and 78 in the last three weeks are solid, only hampered by the zero he copped at Gariwerd when he raved his back out. Josh Hill (50, 46/3) has to lift his game or else he may well be the subject of trade discussions or even delistment. Speaking of team squads, Bandit is starting to run his eye over the list rationalisation at the end of the year, and the likes of Milera, Davis, MacKenzie and Picken should also be very nervous, and will desperately need a form streak in the next few weeks to retain the place in the squad.

[span style='color: #ff0000;]Charlie's Opening prevail, but injury is a difficult pill for Swallow
    Charlie's Opening 1370 defeat Lovely Banks 1014
Charlie's Opening continued their good run of form on the weekend with a good win against Lovely Banks at The Pit. The colorful lighting in place for the game was obviously appealing to Stephen Hill (124) with a welcome return to form. Andrew Swallow (78) however was confused by the bright lights and, thinking he was at a rave party for the second week in a row, ruptured his achilles as he attempted a handball whilst doing his favourite dance move 'The Sprinkler'. Ben Reid (71) also left the ground after rolling an ankle, but it is hopeful he will be able to get up for next week.
Jack (146) and Joey (122) continued their midfield dominance with Swan (159) trying to hold up the Lovely Banks side with a best on field performance. Shaw (105) played well across the backline, with Mackie (94) putting in a typical workmanlike performance. Up front whilst Petrie (88) was down, Lachie Hansen stepped up with a 124... repaying the faith Bandit had in drafting him midseason.
Next week the Spelunkers take on the Iron Knob juggernaut. Savage (92)will be moved into the midfield to replace Swallow, with Picken (81) likely to get a call up from the reserves for a spot on the bench. Atley (57) is waiting in the wing should Reid not recover in time.

[span style='color: #ff0000;]Charlie's Opening get the job done against the Iron Knobs - Minson left wondering what really happened
Iron Knob Codpieces 1340 def by Charlie's Opening Spelunkers 1397 Jack (141) did the job of two mids for the Spelunkers with his 30 possessions, 13 tackles and two goals whilst Griffen (126) amassed 41 possessions for the opposition. Ablett did decide to show up, but his lack of influence early was telling and Joey (128) continued his great run of form.

Giles out-muscled the tag team Ruck combo of Goldy/Minson to take the points in the duel of the big men.

Yet another late in the game cliff-hanger saw Reid (109) turn on the magic with 3 goals when it mattered and Petrie (102) loving the quality supply from the midfield.. Shaun Atley (102) relished his chance in the first team

Keiren Jack has taken out the Pit Boss award for the best and fairest player for the Charlie's Opening Spelunkers for a second year running, with Leigh Montagna and Andrew Swallow coming second and third.
