Mid-season trading priorities With the mid-season trade period upon us after the coming round of matches, Darraweit Guim's recruiting manager and coaching have been in earnest discussions in regards to the priorities of the forthcoming trade period. Whilst we are generally satisfied with the structure, mix and age range of our squad, and hopeful that players set to return in coming weeks offer a boost to the line-up, we are also very aware of the value of the MSD and trade period. The Blimps' hand has been forced somewhat by injuries, meaning that our priority for the coming trade period is a forward. Our second priority is that we are simply unable to take on any players that are not fit. Whilst normally the Blimps don't mind taking on a project with a long-term upside (Dom Tyson, Brad Hill, Trent McKenzie, Michael Walters, and others) who my be injured, this time around we simply can't. As per the norm, we're happy to discuss player worth at any time, and talk trades throughout the trade period. Mutually beneficial trades are the best ones, and we are pleased to see a number of Guim alumni - Boyd, Dal Santo, Edwards, Thompson, Duffield, Cunnington, etc - doing well at other clubs, whilst at the same time enjoying the efforts of those players we have acquired in trades.
Round 7 update and Hindy votes Darraweit returned to the winners list with a much needed victory on the weekend over Wagga Wagga. The returns of Goddard, Rance and Vickery were greatly appreciated, while Josh Gibson again led the way in scoring. However a number of players struggled for scoring, and the Guim forwardline remains rather diabolical to be honest. The byes and mid-season trade period come at a good time. Darraweit sit at 5-2 and in the Top 8. Hindy Votes - Round 7 Gibson 5 (Wow, just wow. Unexpectedly turning into the Guim's best defender) Goddard 4 (Great return from a classy player) Tyson 3 (Much deserved. Has been very solid as an M4/Interchange player this year) Walker 2 (Has hit some good form in recent weeks. Integral cog in defence) Cornes 1 (Another consistent game from the veteran) Special mention also to Ty Vickery, whose 102 was a great return to form and earns him a coach's discretionary vote in the Hindy. Leaderboard: Cornes 16, Harvey 15. Coniglio 12. Goddard 11. Gibson 10. Hill 9. Westhoff 8. Tyson 7. Walker 6. Frawley 5. Nic Nat 3. Newnes 3 McKenzie 1, Vickery 1.
An update over the ORFFA mid-season break Darraweit Guim is looking forward to the return of a number of players - as well as the arrival of at least a couple of new ones - during the ORFFA mid-season break. The Dirigibles have been carefully monitoring the recovery of club co-captain and fan favourite Ivan Maric, who is yet to play a game in Guim colours this year due to injury. Maric's recovery is on track, with hopes he can return to the field soon after the break. Another of the long term injured - Paul Seedsman - has returned to full training. It is hoped he can come into the side after the break also. And while David Armitage remains 2-3 weeks away, Andy Otten is gaining match fitness in the reserves. With the players out on the track during the break, Darraweit's hierachy have been busily working through the free agents list in a bid to fill at least two places on the Dirigibles' list. The difficult decision was made to trade Trent McKenzie to Gariwerd during the break. We wish to thank Trent for his efforts, especially in the second half of 2013 as the side went on an unlikely late season run which culminated in a grand final appearance. However, given the relative strength of our backline, the return of Alex Rance and the expected return of Otten and Seedsman, the decision was made to trade McKenzie in order to gain a high MSD pick. This was achieved, with the Guim securing the number 2 pick in the MSD from Gariwerd. This leaves us with picks 2 and 14 in the draft, with pick 2 earmarked to fill a specific need on our list. The club are considering a number of possible selections at pick 14, and hope a couple of players we have earmarked slip through to our pick. Again, with the Dirigibles' youthful midfield (four starting midfielders under the age of 22), some depth is being considered there. Bolstering other lines is not out of the question either. At this time, it appears that stalwart Nathan Foley will be delisted as well. Nathan has again been a great player for the Guim but we feel the time is right for a parting of the ways. We wish him all the success in the future. A quick review of the season so far All in all, Darraweit is content with how the season has gone so far. Sitting comfortably inside the top 8, with a 5-2 record, is more than acceptable given the string of injuries to key players. Three key players - Maric, Seedsman and Otten, are yet to play this year, while young gun forward Michael Walters is injured and most likely won't be back until 2015 - a major blow for the team. However others have stepped up to the plate. Our four young midfielders in Coniglio, Hill, Tyson and Newnes have all averaged between 80-95ppg this year and have shown signs that they will be a quartet to be reckoned with in years to come. David Armitage provided able support (75 ppg) before his freak injury. Importantly, the experience of senior recruits Kane Cornes and Brendan Goddard cannot be underestimated. Goddard is our leading scorer, averaging 98+ppg, while Cornes averages 97ppg. More youngsters in the form of Tom Curren and Brandon Jack continue to develop as midfielders. Darraweit looked to recruit an experienced midfielder to lend further support during the trade period, to no avail. Negotiations may continue on that front after the draft. The Dirigibles backline has been superb, a rash of injuries to just about every defender on the list. Josh Gibson has led the way, with Andrew Walker very solid and James Frawley enjoying a much improved 2014. Alex Rance's two games have been superb, while McKenzie and veteran Luke McPharlin have played well. Our forward line is a different story, with injuries and inconsistent form making life tough. Co-captain Brent Harvey has had to carry a heavier than expected load due to the absence of Michael Walters through injury, and at times indifferent form from Eddie Betts and Ty Vickery. Justin Westhoff's workrate has been very good, and Vickery - when in form and playing - has shown signs of improvement. Lachie Hunter continues to develop, while fellow youngsters Jed Lamb and Matty McDonough have shown glimpses of good play. Our ruck is crying out for the return of Ivan Maric, with an underdone Nic Nat filling in admirably thus far. We look forward to the return of Ivan, and perhaps improved fitness from Nic Nat after the break. Strangely, not one of our players has averaged over 100ppg so far this season, despite our 5-2 record. The evenness of the team is a trend we wish to continue when recruiting via the draft.
Or, given that now Josh Gibson will miss pretty much the rest of the year, we could just chuck it all in and aim for next year ... Sigh. Can't take a trick. Freak injury number 4 or 5 for the year.
Darraweit will have two picks in the mid season draft (at picks 2 and 14) following the decision to trade Trent McKenzie and delist Nathan Foley.
Darraweit has welcomed one youngster and one veteran presence to the club with the drafting of Jed Bews and Ben McGlynn in the ORFFA mid-season draft. McGlynn is a proven performer, with his goalsneak abilities set to go on show to help the Guim's stuttering forward line improve, as well as provide the Dirigibles' young forwards with veteran leadership. Meanwhile Jed Bews run and dash off the backline saw him quickly develop into a sought after draft pick, with the former Lilac chosen with Darraweit's second selection (14 overall) in the draft. The Dirigibles have wrapped up their draft picks, and look forward to more ORFFA action post mid season break.
In an unexpected move, Darraweit has acquired another Cockatoo, with midfielder Adam Cooney making his way to The Paddock in exchange for youngster Thomas Curren. Cooney is enjoying a fine season, including and exceeding the ability to bump Gary Ablett to the ground. His experience will be invaluable for the likes of Tyson, Coniglio, Hill, Newnes and Jack. We thank Thomas for his efforts in his short time at the Guim, and hope his career flourishes as Gariwerd. Meanwhile Cooney joins Josh Gibson as Cockatoos turned Blimps. We hope Cooney stays injury free, and Gibson gets fit quickly. Meanwhile, Guim fans are excited ahead of the anticipated return of club co-captain and fan favourite Ivan Maric in the coming week or two.
Darraweit returned to good form after the mid-season break, notching up a comfortable win over Larrikin Lagoon. Draftee Ben McGlynn made an instant impact, scoring 130 points to gain 5 votes in theHindy and inspire the previously sputtering Blimp forwardline to perhaps its best performance of the year. Hindy Votes: 5 - McGlynn 4 - Goddard 3 - Harvey 2- Westhoff 1 - Nic Nat Votes so far: Harvey 18 Cornes 16 Goddard 15 Coniglio 12. Westhoff, Gibson 10. Hill 9. Tyson 7. Walker 6. Frawley, McGlynn 5. Nic Nat 4 Newnes 3 McKenzie 1, Vickery 1. In even better news, Darraweit has welcomed back Ivan Maric, Paul Seedsman and Andy Otten from injury. Maric and Otten both played on the weekend, and they will be better for the hit out. Seedsman did not play, but performed brilliantly in the reserves and may return to the seniors next week. Also in contention for senior berths are Jack Newnes - who continues to perform well in his best season thus far - as well as Adnrew Walker, David Armitage and Stephen Coniglio, all of whom are likely to return from injury. The Guim are now the closest to full strength they have been for nigh on 12 months. Only Michael Walters and Josh Gibson - both long term injured - are absent from our best 15.
Darraweit's midfielders have been put on notice after a poor all round effort during ORFFA Round 9 action on the weekend. Of the Guim's six playing midfielders, only Adam Cooney played well, with Kane Cornes slightly down on his season average. However, for a variety of reasons, Tyson, Goddard, Newnes and Coniglio (who started as sub) were well down. Despite a win over Gariwerd on the back of a good forward line effort, a consistent backline and Nic Nat's ruck work, the midfield will need to improve with the Blimps taking on the unbeaten Iron Knob and Foul Bay in the coming fortnight. Hindy votes for Round 9: 5 Harvey - Just keeps on keeping on 4 Nic Nat - Starting to hit some encouraging form 3 McGlynn - Second game for the Guim, another 100+ score 2 Cooney - Another good game by the Brownlow medallist. 1 - Walker - Enjoying a fine season up back. Votes so far: Harvey 23. Cornes 16. Goddard 15. Coniglio 12. Westhoff, Gibson 10. Hill 9. Nic Nat, McGlynn 8. Tyson, Walker 7. Newnes 3. Cooney 2. McKenzie 1, Vickery 1.
Darraweit Guim coach Chris88 has lauded his side's brave effort - while lamenting missed opportunities - after a narrow weekend defeat at the hands of equal ladder leaders Iron Knob. The 35-point loss saw the Dirigibles score 1316 points despite having one midfielder injured after 20 minutes of the game, and another unexpectedly green vested for all bar 20 minutes of game time. Adam Cooney and Stephen Coniglio's scores of 23 and 18 respectively made all the difference in the end, especially given youngster Brad Hill unexpectedly scored 113 on the emergencies list. However the efforts of Guim players to overcome adversity and push Iron Knob all the way have been praised - with players right across the team elevating their efforts in an attempt to achieve an upset despite misfortune and a slew of injuries. With only 3 fit pure forwards, Andy Otten was swung from D into attack and held his own, while Harvey, Westhoff and Betts all excelled. Betts enjoyed his best game for the year and his first Hindy votes fro 2014 after a sold few weeks. Up back, the Guim's only four fit backmen - Walker, Rance, Seedsman and Frawley - all fired and scored consistently. Rance continued his great form and also gathered a Hindy vote. Brendan Goddard played his best game as a Dirigible, his 157 points almost spearheading a late charge from he, Dom Tyson and Frawley to almost pinch the game at the death. Meanwhile Nic Nat's 145 also marked his best game at Darraweit and caps three straight games of 100+ points. Special mention also to David Armitage, who returned from a freak injury to score 89 in trying circumstances. Next week Darraweit faces competition leaders Foul Bay, fresh off a near 1600 point performance. The task looks very daunting, especially with the team again hit by injury. It is unlikely any forwards or defenders will be returning from injury or suspension, leaving the side very undermanned in both areas. Brad Hill will return, while Ivan Maric might also come back into the side. Hindy votes: 5 - Goddard (wow) 4 - Nic Nat (wow) 3 - Harvey (again) 2 - Betts (great game in an undermanned forwardline) 1 - Rance and Westhoff (Rance's best game for the year, while Westhoff continues to play well) Leaderboard: Harvey 26. Goddard 20. Cornes 16. Nic Nat, Coniglio 12. Westhoff 11. Gibson 10. Hill 9. McGlynn 8. Tyson, Walker 7. Frawley 5. Newnes 3. Cooney 2. Betts 2. McKenzie, Rance, Vickery 1.
A big win over Foul Bay and another victory over Venus Bay has seen the Guim secure strongly a place in the ORFFA Top 8. While there were some big performances in the 200 point win over Foul Bay, things didn't quite go to plan against the Vultures, with a series of low scores providing some selection quandaries in coming weeks. As for The Hindy - Brent Harvey continues to lead: Round 14 Hindy Votes: Westhoff 5 - a stunning performance up forward Harvey 4 - as above Goddard 3 - played very well again Rance 2 - challenging now as the Guim's premier defender Cornes 1 - a solid contribution in the middle Round 15 Hindy Votes: Cornes 5 - lead scorer with 104 points. A solid game Rance 4 - more votes for Alex as he continues his fine form Goddard 3 - Goddard again plays well Maric 2 - first votes for the year - great work from the big fella. Frawley 1 - a handy contribution up back. Betts 1 - coach's discretionary vote for his 98 despite being left out of the side. Eddi'es score would've been better than all four playing forwards this week. Sigh. Leaderboard: Harvey 30. Goddard 26. Cornes 22. Westhoff 16. Gibson 10. Hill 9. McGlynn 8. Tyson, Walker, Rance 7. Frawley 6. Newnes, Betts 3. Cooney, Maric 2. McKenzie, Vickery 1. Goddard closes the gap on Harvey to 4 points after another pair of consistent performances. Cornes has moved clear into third place.
Forward on the Block? List management may see a Guim forward on the outer With Under 18 championships occurring right now, Darraweit Guim's list management personnel are already meeting to decide list changes in the lead-up to the 2015 season. And indications are that proposed list and positional changes could see a Guim forward on the outer and up for trade at season's end. 'With changes possibly seeing both Nic Naitanui and James Frawley gaining the ability to play forward, as well as the return of Michael Walters, it looks like we might have way too many forwards,' coach Chris88 said. 'If this was the case, we'd have Harvey, McGlynn, Westhoff, Walters, Nic Nat, Frawley, Betts and Vickery all vying for spots. And that doesn't include Jed Lamb, Lachie Hunter or Matty McDonough - though Matty is likely to be a defender next year.' It appears as though Darraweit will be receptive to talks which bring another quality defender or mid to the club in exchange for one of these forwards. However with this season still alive and new player positioning not confirmed for a few months, the players will continue to concentrate on the task at hand.
Darraweit Guim has overcome two late withdrawals to defeat Whitsundays in a close match during ORFFA Round 13. Both teams played one player short, with Darraweit enduring an extremely late withdrawal after Brad Hill was injured in warm-ups. Reports that he stubbed his foot on a submerged log in the sodden forward pocket of The Paddock were denied by groundstaff, who have worked hard of late to ensure the Blimps' home ground has improved its drainage. However the fast flowing stream and small lake which has submerged a number of cars parked near the boundary line during recent home games in wet weather suggests otherwise. Groundstaff are expected to be on notice now. Meanwhile Nic Nat is on a plane coming back home after mistakenly thinking the game was going to be held in the Whitsundays rather than at home. Rumours abound that he simply wanted a holiday somewhere warm but they are unconfirmed. The good news is that of those players who turned up, 9 of them scored more than 97 to help eke out a win. Co-captain Ivan Maric played his best game for the year, top-scoring with 126 points. Eddie Betts led a dynamic forward efforts with 115, while Andrew Walker bounced back to form with 113 in defence. Late call-up David Armitage enjoyed his best game as a Blimp, scoring 110, while Brent Harvey's even 100 round out the top 5 in the Hindy. The leaderboard is as follows: Leaderboard: Harvey 31. Goddard 26. Cornes 22. Westhoff 16. Coniglio 12. Gibson, Walker 10. Hill 9. McGlynn 8. Tyson, Rance, Maric, Betts 7. Frawley 6. Newnes 3. Cooney, Armitage, Vickery 2. McKenzie 1. Another special mention to Ty Vickery, who would've received a call-up in place of one of our missing players if we'd realised in time. His 109 earns a coach's discretionary vote in the Hindy.
Brent Harvey has all but wrapped up his third straight Hindy Medal as Darraweit Guim's best and fairest with another stunning effort on the weekend. Harvey scored 150 to help propel a depleted side to a win over Powlett Plains. Joining Harvey in scoring over 100 were David Armitage (144 in his best game for the club) and Kane Cornes. Andrew Walker received two votes for his solid game up back; regrettably it has emerged that he will be out for the rest of the year injured, leaving a giant whole in the Guim's defence. Coach Chris88 is hopeful Josh Gibson will return from his own injury to take Walker's spot, while Congilio, Goddard, Cooney and Hill may also all be in the frame for returns. Meanwhile, Lachie Hunter's continued good form in the reserves has him close to senior selection. Round 14 Hindy Votes: 5 - Harvey 4 - Armitage 3 - Cornes 2 - Walker 2 - McGlynn Coaches discretionary vote to Lachie Hunter, whose score would have been better than almost all playing forward this week. Leaderboard: Harvey 36. Goddard 26. Cornes 25. Westhoff 16. Coniglio, Walker 12. Gibson, McGlynn 10. Hill 9. Tyson, Rance, Maric, Betts 7. Frawley, Armitage 6. Newnes 3. Cooney, Vickery 2. McKenzie, Hunter 1.
Darraweit's co-captain Brent Harvey has won another best and fairest for the Dirigibles, despite not having polled any votes over the past fortnight. A stellar run of form throughout the early and middle parts of the season has propelled the veteran to another Hindy. Harvey leads the Hindy voting by 10 with only one further home and away game to play. The stalwart has previously shared the Hindy with Andrew Walker (2013), with the award not given out due to an utter neglect of voting in the ORFFA's inaugural 2012 season. Harvey will be presented with the award in the lead-up to the Guim's first round finals match in a fortnight. Meanwhile youngster Dom Tyson has stormed into the top 5 of Hindy voting after garnering the maximum 10 votes over the past two weeks. Tyson, who had been quiet after a brilliant start to the season, has hit form at the right time. Teammates Justin Westhoff and mid-season pick-up Ben McGlynn have also been among the votes during the last two round in the ORFFA. McGlynn in particular is staking a claim as one of the more inspired mid-season recruits in league history, polling 16 votes in less than half a season. Votes Round 18 (Round 15 of the ORFFA) Tyson 5 Westhoff 4 McGlynn 3 Armitage 2 Maric 1 Votes Round 19 (Round 16 of the ORFFA): Tyson 5 Nic Nat 4 McGlynn 3 Rance 2 Westhoff 1 Leaderboard: Harvey 36. Len wrote: Tyson's a jet Chris, next years winner there, unless you trade him to me He he he! I got pretty lucky with some young mids. Traded for Brad Hill and Dom Tyson on the cheap a couple of years back, got Coniglio last year (though had to give up Cunnington) and picked Newnes in a second round and persisted with him. At various times, all four have played this year which has been nice - and they're only 21 or so as well. Newnes is really the only one I drafted though, which probably suggests I need to pay more attention to my drafting to pick up another good get.
Darraweit has concluded its most successful home and away season ever, winning game number 14 in the last round of ORFFA action over Lovely Banks. The win however has come at a big cost, with a series of injuries smashing the Blimps' defenders. With Walker already ruled out for the year, the Blimps have now lost Seedsman, McPharlin and Otten to injury - leaving the team unlikely to be able to field a full quota of defenders for the first week of the finals. Both Seedsman and McPharlin are very faint chances of playing in Week 1 of the finals; but for Andy Otten the season may be over with a suspected ACL knee injury - which is awful news. The team has had an awful run with injuries during 2014, with notable injuries to Walters, Seedsman, Otten, Gibson, Maric, Armitage, Rance and Cooney disrupting any continuity of team selection and preventing the Blimp from fielding their best 15 at any stage during the year. And while Walters might make a return in the coming weeks, a number of those injured players - Walker, Coniglio, Otten and perhaps McPharlin - lare unlikely to play again this year. Coach Chris8875 will look towards midifielders Brad Hill and Adam Cooney to perhaps fill the breach in defence and play OOP if required. Cooney bounced back to form in a big way after two forgettable performances returning from injury - his score would've earned 5 votes in the Hindy if he was on the field. Instead he gets 2 coach's discretionary votes. After two 1400+ scores, the Blimps almost reached 1300 despite 4 players scoring in the 60s or less. McPharlin was subbed out of the game with injury, while Westhoff played with injury to score around 55. Rance and Gibson both had down games in defence, with hopes of improved form in coming weeks given the crisis up back. Ben McGlynn rounded out an extraordinary half-season with the Blimps, producing another best afield performance to garner 5 Hindy votes and elevate himself into the top 5 in the B&F voting. This is a stunning effort given McGlynn was only drafted to the side in the mid-season draft. Eddie Betts' renaissance continues, 4 votes in the Hindy lifting him into double figures and seeing him continue his great form since the bye. Goddard and Harvey also polled votes in handy efforts, while big Ivan Maric broke through again for a vote. Congratulations again to Brent Harvey - not only for his Hindy win, but for being the highest vote-getter amongst all forwards in the prestigious Les W Medal. The club will honour these achievements at a funcion after the season has concluded. Meanwhile, the Blimps will await other teams' choices of opponents in the first round of finals before finding out who our opponent will be. The Blimps have announced their team for the first round of the finals against Wagga Wagga on the weekend. Hit by a series of injuries, Darraweit will be without late season revelation Ben McGlynn due to injury, while we have virtually run out of defenders and have been extremely fortunate that our friends down in Geelong have seen fit to select Jed Bews for a game. Up forward we are also out of reserves, with only good fortune seeing the return of Michael Walters who is going to be thrown straight into the fray after 18 weeks out with injury. Yes, we are in that much trouble. Best of luck to the players, and to Wagga Wagga too. 8 out of our 15 players, including our entire midfield, will be playing in their first final for Darraweit. D: Frawley, Rance, Gibson, Bews M: Goddard, Armitage, Tyson, Cornes R: Nic Nat F: Harvey, Westhoff, Betts, Walters I/C: Cooney, Maric. Depending on selection decisions, Hill, Newnes and Hunter all stand ready for a last minute call up.
