With just 2 rounds left, we are still a chance to make the finals, but will likely have to win both games to be any chance, and that would still be relying on Wagga Wagga and Venus Bay losing both their final games. We have a slim chance if we win just 1 game, but we would have to score quite a bit in both games to match the points of the two aforementioned teams that are sitting just above us.

Waikickamoocow will have to drop the last two games to miss out on the top 4, with Charlie's Opening coming up against the ladder leaders this week in a match of the round. Powlett Plains and Darraweit will likely result in one of them being very nervous come the final round if Wagga and Venus Bay get home in winnable games.

So this week, we are playing Foul Bay, who is 2nd, and we finish with Nunawading, who is currently 14th, but with just the second worst points total of all teams. As mentioned above, this week, 8th plays 3rd and 9th play 4th, so it is probably likely that both will lose. If we can pull off an almighty upset this weekend, or at least catch up a bit on the points, it may lead to a very exciting finish to the season.

Knowing what was required to keep our finals hopes alive, we've pulled off an almighty upset in the penultimate round of the season, knocking off the defending champs in a super impressive display.
<p style='color: #000000; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: 0px none;Sylvia was our only disappointment, with all but 2 others scoring highly, for a team total above 1400 - which included 8 centurions and 3 others 90+. The other 2 players that joined Sylvia on the lower end of the spectrum were defenders and they did what they had to supporting Tuohy and Gibson who had it all under control back there, with the former even sneaking forward to kick 3 magnificent goals in a BoG display. <p style='color: #000000; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: 0px none;

First, it was the loss to Wagga Wagga that filtered through and the crowd erupted, as that was the most pertinent result for us. Hearing moments later that Venus Bay had a close victory had a tad of a dampening effect, but quick calculations showed that we had scored enough points more than them to overtake them in total points scored, meaning their win was far from devastating. <p style='color: #000000; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: 0px none;

This is a huge game for the club, the biggest in our short history, as a win could put us into the finals. It is unlikely, though, as we also have to count on other results falling our way, we're extremely pumped for the occasion and will be throwing everything at Nuna. For this reason, we will be rushing back Allen Christensen for the game. When there was news of the rave at Gariwerd when Charlie's Opening visited, Bundy took the game off, cause he couldn't wait to get started. He had an almighty bender and is still not quite right, possibly still a tad too fragile to play ORFFA, but we need to take that risk this week. We have also brought Chris Masten straight back in. Chris seems to have learnt his lesson and seems genuinely remorseful for his poor showing 2 weeks ago. He has generally been in excellent form this season, and we believe dropping him after a score in the 20s will do him good. Both inclusions will start on the bench. Despite Cam Pedersen again being a late withdrawl due to a pre game panick attack and that we had no emergency to cover him, the boys were able to finish off the season with a big win over Nunawading, but it was not enough to secure a finals berth and we have finished 9th for 2013.
Wagga Wagga was able to jump into 8th position with a narrow victory over Lovely Banks, and Venus Bay dropped from 8th to 10th after a big loss. The 3 teams finished on the same record, with just total points scored separating them.

Even though we were not able to make the real finals, the bottom 10 will be fighting it out for the Zac Dawson Who Cares Cup and we play Mt Beauty this week. We have sent Adam Cooney and Nick Dal Santo in for post season surgery to get them right for big years in 2014, and we have dropped a host of other players, giving opportunities to our fringe players. Sam Bleese and Shaun McKernan face fitness tests, but we hope they will be right for the game.

Ok, so we threw a young and inexperienced side into the 1st round of the Who Cares Cup and we have been knocked out, as expected, but what was not expected is that we made a good game of it, putting it right up to the much heralded Mount Beauty side. <div>
<div> <div>Unfortunately, Chris Masten thought the season was over, not realising we had a game on this weekend, and he didnt show up to the game. Luckily Sam Blease was able to pass his fitness test and play, and Sylvia came into the side for Masten. <div>I doubt whether Pedersen will ever play for Gariwerd again, having not been able to get over his pre game anxiety once again, having a panic attack that forced him from the team - Josh Gibson was able to come in and actually did quite well in the ruck; he just pretended he was spoiling an opponent's mark every time he went up for a hitout and he killed it, thumping the ball all over the place. McKernan was also a late withdrawal after failing his fitness test, meaning De Boer was happy to get a run, after bad mouthing the club and selectors for opting to rest him in the leadup.

Deledio smashed it, probably in response to losing the B&F to Cooney who has now gone in for post season minor surgery to get ready for next year. Lids was BoG and we hope he can keep this resentment and enthusiasm up for next season. We were very impressed with young Levi Casboult and look forward to his promising career at Gariwerd. Same goes for Christensen, Tuohy and Wallis.
Thats it now. No more games for us this season. The players and staff are all getting a much deserved break now, although there will be an end of season review going up at some stage soon and there are also the trade periods and delistments and drafts to deal with over the off season too, say stay tuned.

Thank you to both Cam and Mitch for their service. Unfortunately neither were able to get on the park too often, but when they did, they almost always performed admirably. We wish them both good luck at their new homes. And we take great delight in welcoming our two new players, Dan Nicholson and Cam Guthrie.
Dan Nicholson Dan Nicholson is an exciting half back flanker who is just 22 years old. He is quick, with great endurance, and can rack up the possessions seemingly with ease.
Cam Guthrie Cam Guthrie is also a young defender, a year younger than Nicholson at just 21 years of age. Although both defenders, Guthrie is different type of player to Nicholson in that he is more of a stopper, not really getting a lot of the ball himself, but when he does, he uses it extremely well. He is a strong and tough lad and we're looking forward to seeing how he develops over the years to come.
So, there is another trade period coming up, from 17-23 January, and the delistments need to be announced by March 1, 2014. In the meantime, we plan to do a review of our season in 2013, so stay tuned for that.

 

The 2014 season is fast approaching and I don't think we'll have time to make public any of the finer details of our end-of-season review. Basically, after finishing 9th, we had to have a serious assessment of our list carried out to predict which way we were headed on the ladder. It was ultimately decided we may have had the list to make the finals, but we were not consistent enough to match it with the best in the comp. So we made the decision to have a bit of a cleanup around the place. On top of the extra rubbish bins around the ground, we'll be saying goodbye to a significant number of prominent players. Already, we've traded out Mitch Clark in the last trade period, and we've got another trade period in progress now. I'll wait until its concluded before updating the comings and goings of it. Early next week, we'll be announcing any delisted players before the PreSeason Draft. And before then, we've organised a practice match against Charlie's Opening this weekend. the match will be held in Sydney and we hope a lot of Gariwerd supporters will make the trip, as there will be a number of new players practicing our famous Marn Grook style and a number of players who will be hoping to impress before delistment time. I think Eminem will be providing some entertainment at the game. We'll be back in a few days to announce the results of the current trade period, but will announce the teams for the weekends match tomorrow.

We've turned up as planned, but it seems our opponents may have forgotten. Well, Charlies Opening never turned up and we have rescheduled the practice match to play them next weekend, but we were able to arrange a scratch match against theMoore Park Tigers Junior Australian Football Club. It was an excellent game and the after match entertainment by Eminem was ok. Unfortunately Allen Christensen sustained a severe injury and looks to be sidelined for a few months. Blease and McKernan both laid solid claims to be retained on the list for a bit longer.
