With just 2 rounds left, we are still a chance to make the finals, but will likely have to win both games to be any chance, and that would still be relying on Wagga Wagga and Venus Bay losing both their final games. We have a slim chance if we win just 1 game, but we would have to score quite a bit in both games to match the points of the two aforementioned teams that are sitting just above us. Here is the ladder: <p style='margin-bottom: 10px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; line-height: 18px; background-color: #fbfbfb; color: #444444;<strong style='font-size: 14px;The Ladder[/b] <p style='margin-bottom: 10px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; line-height: 18px; background-color: #fbfbfb; color: #444444;The Final 8 is starting to take shape however there are some big games in the coming week that will go a long way to sorting it out. Waikickamoocow will have to drop the last two games to miss out on the top 4, with Charlie's Opening coming up against the ladder leaders this week in a match of the round. Powlett Plains and Darraweit will likely result in one of them being very nervous come the final round if Wagga and Venus Bay get home in winnable games. That preview is from the blog section. So this week, we are playing Foul Bay, who is 2nd, and we finish with Nunawading, who is currently 14th, but with just the second worst points total of all teams. As mentioned above, this week, 8th plays 3rd and 9th play 4th, so it is probably likely that both will lose. If we can pull off an almighty upset this weekend, or at least catch up a bit on the points, it may lead to a very exciting finish to the season. Go Cockatoos
Knowing what was required to keep our finals hopes alive, we've pulled off an almighty upset in the penultimate round of the season, knocking off the defending champs in a super impressive display. <p style='color: #000000; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: 0px none;Sylvia was our only disappointment, with all but 2 others scoring highly, for a team total above 1400 - which included 8 centurions and 3 others 90+. The other 2 players that joined Sylvia on the lower end of the spectrum were defenders and they did what they had to supporting Tuohy and Gibson who had it all under control back there, with the former even sneaking forward to kick 3 magnificent goals in a BoG display. <p style='color: #000000; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: 0px none; <p style='color: #000000; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: 0px none; The pro Cockatoo home crowd were ecstatic with the win and hung around after the game awaiting the results of the games involving the teams directly above us on the ladder. First, it was the loss to Wagga Wagga that filtered through and the crowd erupted, as that was the most pertinent result for us. Hearing moments later that Venus Bay had a close victory had a tad of a dampening effect, but quick calculations showed that we had scored enough points more than them to overtake them in total points scored, meaning their win was far from devastating. <p style='color: #000000; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: 0px none; <p style='color: #000000; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: 0px none; <p style='color: #000000; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: 0px none; <p style='color: #000000; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: 0px none; <p style='color: #000000; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: 0px none; <p style='color: #000000; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: 0px none; <p style='color: #000000; margin-bottom: 10px; outline: 0px none;To make the finals now, we need to win our last game and both of Wagga Wagga and Venus Bay need to lose. Thanks Chels. Looks like we've got a better team in this week too:anthak wrote:GARIWERD DROPS THEIR CAPTAIN Early in the season, it was announced in-house at Gariwerd that a left footer would get the chance to captain the side in this themed round; but during the week, the lefties in the team got together with our Leadership Group and decided that we could not remove Koby Stevens from the role after the team's unprecedented run of success since he was made Cap several weeks ago. BUT, at Gariwerd, we pick the team first and captain second, and in solidarity with the left footers and to avoid having to go back on our word from earlier in the season, we have dropped Koby Stevens in a move bound to shock the fans. Josh Gibson and Nick Dal Santo will be joint captains for this week. Burgoyne will remain vice captain. The only lefties in the team this week are Nick Dal Santo and Josh Gibson. Both of Jared Polec and Jasper Pittard are unlucky to miss out, the former, after being named an emergency for the last 2 weeks, but not even being retained as an emergency for this round of significance for him, and the latter, being dropped this round. If Pittard happens to end up being called up late, he will receive the admirable title of Acting Deputy Vice Captain for this week only. This is a huge game for the club, the biggest in our short history, as a win could put us into the finals. It is unlikely, though, as we also have to count on other results falling our way, we're extremely pumped for the occasion and will be throwing everything at Nuna. For this reason, we will be rushing back Allen Christensen for the game. When there was news of the rave at Gariwerd when Charlie's Opening visited, Bundy took the game off, cause he couldn't wait to get started. He had an almighty bender and is still not quite right, possibly still a tad too fragile to play ORFFA, but we need to take that risk this week. We have also brought Chris Masten straight back in. Chris seems to have learnt his lesson and seems genuinely remorseful for his poor showing 2 weeks ago. He has generally been in excellent form this season, and we believe dropping him after a score in the 20s will do him good. Both inclusions will start on the bench. Here's the Gariwerd Cockatoos team for the final round away against Nunawading. Despite Cam Pedersen again being a late withdrawl due to a pre game panick attack and that we had no emergency to cover him, the boys were able to finish off the season with a big win over Nunawading, but it was not enough to secure a finals berth and we have finished 9th for 2013. Wagga Wagga was able to jump into 8th position with a narrow victory over Lovely Banks, and Venus Bay dropped from 8th to 10th after a big loss. The 3 teams finished on the same record, with just total points scored separating them. But that didn't faze them at all, with all sorts of other contributors racking up points. Tippett (130), Christensen, Deledio and Burgoyne were all among the points. <p style='margin-bottom: 10px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; line-height: 18px; outline: 0px; background-color: #fbfbfb; For Nunawading, no century scorers and a shortage of players around the ground didn't help its efforts. Rookie sensation Jaeger O'Meara rounded off his fine first year by top scoring with 94 points. melbandy wrote: Nunawading (967) were trounced by Gariwerd (1329) In an insipid effort where not a single Nuffer was able to raise the bat (maybe they were getting ready for cricket season) Gariwerd really showed no mercy with 5 tons and 4 90's. As mentioned above, we have made a lot of changes for our team for the Zac Dawson Who Cares Cup:anthak wrote:After missing the top 8, Gariwerd have decided to rest a few players and give some game time to some fringe players for the Zac Dawson Who Cares Cup. Koby Stevens comes back in and will take on the captaincy again, and we are giving Jasper Pittard a chance as VC, given he missed his opportunity last week in Lefty round. Sam Bleese and Shaun McKernan still need to pass fitness tests and may be late withdawals and there is always a chance that Cam Pedersen will have too much anxiety to front up, so we are still not sure if any of them 3 will actually pull the boots on, but all are covered by emergencies. Our 2012 b&f, Brett Deledio, will start this game from the bench after leading our 2013 b&f all season before being leapfrogged in the final game's votes, and we have dropped a host of stars, although 4 of them are emergencies and may be called upon. Matt De Boer was extremely vocal during the week about his anger at being rested, so he is an emergency; Josh Gibson will fill in as our ruck if required as he is the tallest player not in the 1st 15; Burgoyne is an emergency as the only other available defender and Sylvia could do with another run if Bleese doesnt get up for it. Dal Santo and Cooney have both gone in for minor surgery to get them fit and raring to go for 2014. Despite our Best and Fairest winner, Cooney, looking the best he has for years[/b][/url in the last game of the season. We are really excited to see the likes of Casboult and Stratton given a chance again and both will be trying to stake their claim for a spot on the 2014 list. Ok, so we threw a young and inexperienced side into the 1st round of the Who Cares Cup and we have been knocked out, as expected, but what was not expected is that we made a good game of it, putting it right up to the much heralded Mount Beauty side. <div> <div> <div>Unfortunately, Chris Masten thought the season was over, not realising we had a game on this weekend, and he didnt show up to the game. Luckily Sam Blease was able to pass his fitness test and play, and Sylvia came into the side for Masten. <div>I doubt whether Pedersen will ever play for Gariwerd again, having not been able to get over his pre game anxiety once again, having a panic attack that forced him from the team - Josh Gibson was able to come in and actually did quite well in the ruck; he just pretended he was spoiling an opponent's mark every time he went up for a hitout and he killed it, thumping the ball all over the place. McKernan was also a late withdrawal after failing his fitness test, meaning De Boer was happy to get a run, after bad mouthing the club and selectors for opting to rest him in the leadup. <div> <div> Here's the scores: anthak wrote: Mount Beauty 1229 defeated Gariwerd 1166 Blease made it through his fitness test, but was clearly not alright as he struggled to a score of 13. McKernan did not pass his fitness test and De Boer took his place in the first 15. Pedersen was once again too anxious on game day and Josh Gibson took his spot, out of position in the ruck. And Masten was also a late withdrawal for us, with Sylvia coming in for him. Lids responded well to getting beat in the B&F by 1 vote in the last game, with a BOG 143, but it was not enough to get this young Gariwerd side over the line against a very strong (on paper) Mount Beauty. Same goes for Christensen, Tuohy and Wallis. Thats it now. No more games for us this season. The players and staff are all getting a much deserved break now, although there will be an end of season review going up at some stage soon and there are also the trade periods and delistments and drafts to deal with over the off season too, say stay tuned. We've all been hiding out in the long grass, but we thought it about time to announce the comings and goings that occurred during the Trade Period held from 10 - 29 September 2013. We were involved in 2 trades and the details are as follows: Gariwerd sends Cam Pedersen to Larrikin Lagoon in exchange for Dan Nicholson Mounty Beauty trades Pick 8, Guthrie and Pick 62 to Gariwerd,Gariwerd trades Pick 10, Mitch Clarke and Pick 45 to Mount Beauty That is a net result of: <p style='margin-bottom: 10px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, San-Serif; font-size: 12px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; line-height: 16px; outline: 0px; color: #000000;In: <p style='margin-bottom: 10px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, San-Serif; font-size: 12px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; line-height: 16px; outline: 0px; color: #000000;Dan Nicholson; Cam Guthrie; Pick 8; Pick 62 <p style='margin-bottom: 10px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, San-Serif; font-size: 12px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; line-height: 16px; outline: 0px; color: #000000; <p style='margin-bottom: 10px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, San-Serif; font-size: 12px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; line-height: 16px; outline: 0px; color: #000000;Out: <p style='margin-bottom: 10px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, San-Serif; font-size: 12px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; line-height: 16px; outline: 0px; color: #000000;Cam Pederson; Mitch Clark; Pick 10; Pick 45 Thank you to both Cam and Mitch for their service. Unfortunately neither were able to get on the park too often, but when they did, they almost always performed admirably. We wish them both good luck at their new homes. And we take great delight in welcoming our two new players, Dan Nicholson and Cam Guthrie. Dan Nicholson Dan Nicholson is an exciting half back flanker who is just 22 years old. He is quick, with great endurance, and can rack up the possessions seemingly with ease. Cam Guthrie Cam Guthrie is also a young defender, a year younger than Nicholson at just 21 years of age. Although both defenders, Guthrie is different type of player to Nicholson in that he is more of a stopper, not really getting a lot of the ball himself, but when he does, he uses it extremely well. He is a strong and tough lad and we're looking forward to seeing how he develops over the years to come. So, there is another trade period coming up, from 17-23 January, and the delistments need to be announced by March 1, 2014. In the meantime, we plan to do a review of our season in 2013, so stay tuned for that.
The 2014 season is fast approaching and I don't think we'll have time to make public any of the finer details of our end-of-season review. Basically, after finishing 9th, we had to have a serious assessment of our list carried out to predict which way we were headed on the ladder. It was ultimately decided we may have had the list to make the finals, but we were not consistent enough to match it with the best in the comp. So we made the decision to have a bit of a cleanup around the place. On top of the extra rubbish bins around the ground, we'll be saying goodbye to a significant number of prominent players. Already, we've traded out Mitch Clark in the last trade period, and we've got another trade period in progress now. I'll wait until its concluded before updating the comings and goings of it. Early next week, we'll be announcing any delisted players before the PreSeason Draft. And before then, we've organised a practice match against Charlie's Opening this weekend. the match will be held in Sydney and we hope a lot of Gariwerd supporters will make the trip, as there will be a number of new players practicing our famous Marn Grook style and a number of players who will be hoping to impress before delistment time. I think Eminem will be providing some entertainment at the game. We'll be back in a few days to announce the results of the current trade period, but will announce the teams for the weekends match tomorrow.

Def: Nicholson; Guthrie; Stratton; Hurn (VC) Mid: Hutchings; Stevens (C); Hunt; Toumpas Ruck: Hickey Fwd: Blease; McKernan; Christensen; Sylvia Int: Deledio; Casboult notes: * A couple of new names in Hutchings and Hickey * Deledio is on the bench after his BoG performance from this position late last season * Cooney is being rested after his end of season minor surgery last year * The ommission of Captain Shaun Burgoyne is sure to raise eyebrows * New recruits Dan Nicholson and Cam Guthrie both play their first games for Gariwerd * A number of fringe players get their chance to stake their claim on a list spot in the leadup to the delistment period. We've turned up as planned, but it seems our opponents may have forgotten. Well, Charlies Opening never turned up and we have rescheduled the practice match to play them next weekend, but we were able to arrange a scratch match against theMoore Park Tigers Junior Australian Football Club. It was an excellent game and the after match entertainment by Eminem was ok. Unfortunately Allen Christensen sustained a severe injury and looks to be sidelined for a few months. Here are the scores of the match: Def: Nicholson 77; Guthrie 111; Stratton 92; Hurn (VC) 70 Mid: Hutchings 122; Stevens (C) 137; Hunt 21; Toumpas 13 Ruck: Hickey 5 Fwd: Blease 166; McKernan 123; Christensen 8; Sylvia (DNP - was not replaced as no emergencies travelled) Int: Deledio 45; Casboult 76 Total: 1066 - not a bad score considering it was the first hitout and that it was against juniors, aged 5-13. <p >
That age range is particularly troublesome opposition for many. My kids, whilst in that age range, lived on the edge of being sold to arabs

Blease and McKernan both laid solid claims to be retained on the list for a bit longer.

Welcome to the new players: Mark Hutchings 22 year old midfielder, coming from Daraweit Guim. Excellent potential. Despite his limited experience at the highest level, is already elite at winning contested footy and applying tackles. Michael Evans 21 year old midfielder, coming from Larrikin Lagoon. struggled with injury last season, but when he did play, demonstrated he has a knack for finding the footy. <img alt='' width='240' height='270' id='irc_mi' src='http://www.footytragic.com/sized/9354c125/3236/main//3236-main-0-240x-1.jpg' class='irc_mut' style='margin-top: 145px;[/img] Tom Hickey 23 year old ruckman, Poor ruckman, with limited potential. We do not have high hopes for Hickey, but we have our fingers crossed
