The 2015 season has begun and it has gone off with a bang for Gariwerd. We travelled to Lovely Banks for round 1 and came away with a smashing victory, finding ourselves on top of the ORFFA ladder after round 1. We were able to field an almost full strength side, with only Tom Hickey really missing from the selected side, and Andrew Mackie missing after he was a late late withdrawal. We won the game 1467 - 1075, with our highest score ever I think. Heres how the team lined up and scored:
Def: Andrew Mackie 0 Sam Fisher 100 Zach TUOHY 49

    Shannon Hurn 86 Brodie SMITH 144 0

Mid: Brett Deledio 66 Nathan Jones 99 Ben NEWTON 0

    Jared POLEC 113 Cameron GUTHRIE 92 0

    Ruc: Daniel GORRINGE 71 0

Fwd: Taylor Walker 177 Allan CHRISTENSEN 91 Harry Cunningham 0

    Chad Wingard 121 Jeremy Cameron 68 0

Int: Chris Masten 93 Mitch WALLIS 97 Lynden Dunn 0

And here are the B&F votes: 3 - Taylor Walker - Magnificent performance 2 - Sam Fisher - after a positive start by his teammates, Sam lifted the game to a new level and broke the floodgates open with the first triple figure score for the round 1 - Daniel Gorringe - We were stoked that he was available to play his first game for the club, and he took the opportunity well with a solid game Now, I dont think we'll post the ladder each and every week, but its worth recording this one I think :) LADDER

Round 2 After sitting top of the ladder after week 1, we headed home for round 2 wanting to put on a show for our home ground fans, and we were able to field a strong team to give a good chance of a similar performance to the 1st round... But it wasnt to be, we were humbled by a spirited Birdsville Battlers team that really took it up to us, and we ended up losing 1148 - 1242.
Out: Brett Deledio, Zach Tuohy (Our two lowest scorers in round 1).
In: Ben Newton, Andrew Mackie (Both debut for the club)

Heres was the team as it was named:
D: Mackie, Fisher, Hurn (VC), Smith (e: Tuohy)
M: Masten, Jones, Polec, Guthrie (e: Miller)
    R: Gorringe (e: Dunn - oop)
F: TWalker, Christensen, Wingard (C), JCameron (e: Casboult)
    I: Newton, Wallis
Daniel Gorringe was a late out, and Dunn came in for him to play his first game for the club. Here are the scores from the game:

Def: Andrew Mackie 72 Sam Fisher 121 Zach TUOHY 0

    Shannon Hurn 53 Brodie SMITH 117 0

Mid: Chris Masten 86 Nathan Jones 41 Touk Miller 0

    Jared POLEC 70 Cameron GUTHRIE 92 0

Ruc: Daniel GORRINGE 0 Lynden Dunn 46

Fwd: Taylor Walker 72 Allan CHRISTENSEN 72 Levi CASBOULT 0

    Chad Wingard 67 Jeremy Cameron 54 0

Int: Ben NEWTON 55 Mitch WALLIS 110 0

And the B&F votes: 3 - Mitch Wallis (stood up and took over an otherwise underperforming midfield) 2 - Sam Fisher (continued his strong start to the season with another solid display) 1 - Brodie Smith (Was concussed late in the game, but performed well before then) And here's the leaderboard (with rounds polled in brackets): 4 - Sam Fisher (1, 2) 3 - Taylor Walker (1); Mitch Wallis (2) 1 - Daniel Gorringe (1); Brodie Smith (2)

Our preparation for Round 3, involved a team meeting where we reviewed video of our opponent Gundagai's previous game and laughed at them for 1 minute on the Tuesday at 11:15am. A slightly unorthodox method, that we are trying out this week due to the ORFFA theme for Round 2.
Round 2 10.04 - 12.04 International Moment of Laughter Day
April 14 is Moment of Laughter Day around the world. Humorologist Izzy Gesell created Moment of Laughter Day to encourage people to laugh. The occasion will be marked by one minutes laughter on April 14 at the expense of the ORFFA team posting the lowest score for the round.

Round 3: Our laughing expense came to Gariwerd for Round 3, but it was Gundagai, perennial wooden spooners, who had the last laugh! With us losing 1013 - 1070, leaving us at 1-2 on the season thus far.
    In: Daniel Gorringe
    Out: Andrew Mackie

There were no late changes, and this is how everyone scored:

Def: Lynden Dunn 55 Sam Fisher 72 Harry Cunningham - oop 0

Shannon Hurn (VC) 64 Brodie SMITH 87 0

Mid: Chris Masten 81 Nathan Jones 101 Touk Miller 0

    Jared POLEC 65 Cameron GUTHRIE 86 0

Ruc: Daniel GORRINGE 32 Zach TUOHY - oop 0

Fwd: Taylor Walker 76 Allan CHRISTENSEN 73 Levi CASBOULT 0

    Chad Wingard (C) 77 Jeremy Cameron 63 0

Int: Ben NEWTON 66 Mitch WALLIS 15 0

Here are the votes: 3 - Nathan Jones (only player to top 100 in a very low scoring game) 2 - Cam Guthrie (whilst not spectacular, this is another solid game from him this year and he deserves the 2 points) 1 - Brodie Smith (far below his best, but this was a solid outing after being concussed the week previous)
And here's the leaderboard (with rounds polled in brackets):
    4 - Sam Fisher (1, 2)
    3 - Taylor Walker (1); Mitch Wallis (2); Nathan Jones (3)
    2 - Cam Guthrie (3); Brodie Smith (2, 3)
    1 - Daniel Gorringe (1)

Now we need to get ready to head to Darraweit for Round 4, who are currently sitting 2nd on the ladder. We will need to see a massive form reversal to be any chance of an upset victory!

Hey Ant - looking forward to welcoming the Cockies around for a game and after match catch-up at the Paddock this coming weekend. Reckon it should be a good game ... I fear for my backline if your forwards get going.

I think it will be a high scoring game mate, with both teams' forward lines very strong!

So, we travelled to Darraweit Guim for Round 4, and came off 2nd best in a fairly close game. We made 2 changes this week: Out: Gorringe and Wallis In: Hickey and Tuohy But then Hickey was a late withdrawal and Cunningham came in to replace him, out of position in the ruck.

    Les W votes - DGD v Gariwerd

    5 - Maric - Guim
    4 - Edwards - Guim
    3 - Armitage - Guim
    2 - N Jones - Gariwerd
    1 - Harvey - Guim

Good to see Maric back in form. Thanks for the game Chris. and good to see everyone is enjoying the after game catch up! Much to our surprise, Tex stopped playing at half time to fire up the bbq. In round 1 he was firing up the team, to a score of almost 1500, but he has dropped right off lately and his enthusiasm for the bbq over the closing stages of the game has raised certain questions. What is it about the Guim tucker that makes it so damn good? For the 2nd week in a row, Nathan Jones was the only player to score in triple figures. The rest of the team has been mostly disappointing for the last 3 weeks, and it is clear that they got way ahead of themselves, after scoring Gariwerd's highest ever score in round 1, which saw them sitting top of the ladder. Turns out that win was against the team now sitting last on the ladder, the Lovely Banks Lilacs who have the 3rd worst defence in the Association so far this season. We have now slipped to 15th on the ladder and we need to do some serious soul searching this week before we welcome Powlett Plains to Gariwerd for Muso round next week. This week's game against Darraweit Guim was a great contest and was in the balance for much of it. In the end, it was probably Tom Hickey's late withdrawal that really cost the Cockies, as it allowed the Guim's Ivan Maric to absolutely monster the late inclusion Harry Cunningham in the ruck. Mullet Maric putting on a dominant BoG display and Cunningham a poultry out-of-position 23. The 101 points difference between them was close enough to the 113 pt final margin in the game. But the best team clearly won. The win moves the Guim to a deserved top place on the ladder as the only undefeated team left in the ORFFA this season. and their reserves are doing well too!

We were wondering how the BBQ ended up getting fired up so quickly - now it is obvious what happened.

Tex does cook up a mean steak though, so I think everyone appreciated his efforts!!

Thanks for the game Ant - I don't think either team was in top form so hopefully both Darraweit and Gariwerd can fire up a touch in the coming matches.

Round 7 After finally getting back on the winners list in Round 6, we travelled back home and, in front of a joyous and jovial home crowd, we were able to make it two wins in a row, with a good win over the visiting Mt Beauty Uglies. Final scores were 1394 - 1144. We made 2 changes to our winning round 7 side, omitting both Zach Tuohy and Matt Crouch, the former should probably count himself lucky that he was kept in the ones for as long as he was, and the latter was prematurely included in the team last week, when it was obvious we should have brought him up through the ressies instead. Coming into the side was Mitch Wallis who returned from his injury, and Touk Miller for his ORFFA debut. It was a really strong performance across every line, with only Mitch Wallis reallydisappointing, but he can be excused due to just coming back from injury. Unfortunately Brodie Smith was knocked out for the 2nd time this season and it looks like we will need to give him a rest from footy for a bit. Here are the votes: 3 - Brett Deledio (Was huge late, when the game was in the balance) 2 - Shannon Hurn (A general down back. A true Vice Captain's game) 1 - Touk Miller (Massive debut game in the ORFFA. Was influential early in the game) And here's the leaderboard (with rounds polled in brackets): 7 - Sam Fisher (1, 2, 5) 6 -Nathan Jones (3, 4) 5 -Jeremy Cameron (4, 6) 3 - Taylor Walker (1); Mitch Wallis (2); Brett Deledio (7); Shannon Hurn (5, 7) 2 - Cam Guthrie (3); Brodie Smith (2, 3); Tom Hickey (5); Allan Christensen (6) 1 - Daniel Gorringe (1); Chad Wingard (4); Chris Masten (6); Touk Miller (7)

We now head into the mid season break. After a strong first game of the season, we've seen a largely inconsistent and underwhelming season from the team thus far. A few players, such as Brodie Smith, Brett Deledio and Andrew Mackie, have found it tough to string games together, let alone good ones, and others, such as Allen Christensen and Jeremy Cameron, have struggled for form for most of the year, but most players have shown their brilliance on occasions. Touk Miller has been impressive on debut and Chad Wingard has handled the captaincy ok. Chris Masten has gone up a notch this year, as has Mitch Wallis as well. Whilst Angus Litherland, Jimmy Toumpas and Levi Casboult have all been great in the reserves. Last year we won 5 games total, and we have already won 4, so we're not doing too badly in that sense, but after some big acquisitions over the off-season, the locals were excited and geared up for a big season, but it has been more difficult than expected to change the culture to a winning one after last season's poor efforts. We got off to a great start in round 1, but clearly got ahead of ourselves, as we struggled from then on, before winning a few games over the last month or so before the break. After the break, we expect to welcome back Brodie Smith, who played a game in the reserves in the last round before the break, and Sam Fisher who was dropped after the round 8 loss and couldnt get back into the side after our round 9 win. Jared Polec has missed several games already with a broken foot and is hoping to return for the last game of the season against Charlies Opening.

Mid season list management: This year, the trade period is running before, during and after the draft. Pre draft: We traded our 2016 PSD round 2 pick to Marble Bar, for Tom Bellchambers. We traded Sam Kerridge and our MSD pick 25 to Poweltt Plains, for MSD pick 15. Prior to the draft, we delisted Daniel Gorringe. And went into the draft with 1 live pick: pick 15.
Then during the draft, Tom Bellchambers injured himself at his first training session with the club and is expected to miss the remainder of 2015! We then traded Mark Hutchings to Powlett Plains, for MSD pick 76. We used two picks in the draft: picks 15 and 76. We drafted: Pick 15: James Stewart, FWD (Greater Western Sydney) Pick 76: Tom Derickx, RUCK (Sydney) The trade period is still running, so we'll post the net result and welcomes for the newbies at the conclusion of the trade period.

Last weekend we all got together for a celebration for the Winter Solstice. It was a great night. We have continued the theme at training all through the week, and will continue to do so right up to the round 11 match against Foul Bay for the ORFFA's Solstice Round. Here are some pics of the week so far: [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

With the mid-season trade period now coming to a close, we would like to announce the net player movement for this mid season break. This is the first year that the players have stayed on and continued training through the mid-season break, but we said goodbye to a few players. OUT: Sam Kerridge, Mark Hutchings, Daniel Gorringe, 2016 PSD round 2 pick, 2015 MSD pick 25. IN: Tom Bellchambers, James Stewart, Tom Derickx, 2015 MSD pick 15 (used to select Stewart), 2015 MSD pick 76 (used to select Derickx). We are sad to see the 3 players leave us, because we believe they all have bright futures in the game, but we feel that these changes will strengthen our side, and we would now like to welcome the new players. Remarkably, the shortest of the three new additions is a massive 6'6'! Tom Bellchambers [IMG]

GWS have very high expectations for 'Lord' Stewart ant, had he not worn orange socks I would have picked him myself, unfortunately with 9 jaffas already I have to look elsewhere..

I have watched quite a few GWS games this year, and I actually thought a number of times 'gee, whoever owns Stewart in ORFFA is lucky'... i had not known he was not owned. Very pleased to have been able to draft him.
