We were pumped for Round 11 against Foul Bay but after the tragic passing of Phil Walsh the entire ORFFA round was called off, and rightly so! Here's a bit of news about the team we had prepared for the clash: anthak wrote: TerryinBangkok wrote: anthak wrote: Gariwerd D: ... M: ... R: ... F: ... (em: C. Wingard) I: ...(em: H. Cunningham) Must have a very impressive forward line for Wingard to be EMG. Let me know if you want to trade him down the track. I went to the VFL last weekend for Collingwood v Box Hill, and I was so looking forward to seeing big Mason Cox play, but he was dropped for the game unfortunately - I think he was rested. So, I was really keen to give him a run in the ORFFA this week, and our captain, Mr Wingard was kind enough to step down to an emergency role to make way for the big man. Shannon Hurn will fill in as Captain this week. And as his VC, it was out of three members of our leadership group who are playing in this game - Masten, Christensen and Mackie - and Masten has been rewarded for his strong form this year with the VC duties. Here is our full team for this round: IN: Sam Fisher, Mason Cox (debut), Brodie Smith. OUT: Zach Tuohy, Chad Wingard, Touk Miller. Def: Andrew Mackie Lynden Dunn Zach TUOHY Sam Fisher Shannon Hurn (C) Mid: Brett Deledio Chris Masten (VC) Nathan Jones Mitch WALLIS Ruc: Tom HICKEY Levi CASBOULT - oop Fwd: Taylor Walker Allan CHRISTENSEN Chad Wingard Jeremy Cameron Mason Cox Int: Brodie SMITH Cameron GUTHRIE Harry Cunningham Unfortunately Mason Cox did not get to make his ORFFA debut, but his inclusion in the team shows how he is tracking at the club and we have hope he will get another opportunity soon. With the seniors being called off, many of our players went down to play for the reserves, with only Brodie Smith, Cam Guthrie, Andrew Mackie, Mason Cox and Tex Walker getting the week off from those named in the team above. Somewhat surprisingly, many of the players struggled in the reserves and it was probably lucky we didnt come up against Foul Bay last week. Best players in the reserves were Chad Wingard, Nathan Jones and Chris Masten. Jeremy Cameron did ok, but everyone else struggled. This week we host Cradle Mountain for Chelsea Roffey round and we are looking forward to getting back into ORFFA action after a months' break. RIP Phil Walsh
Round 12 Vs Cradle Mountain Devils. After picking a team for round 11 before the round was called off, Im not sure which team to use to declare ins & outs. I guess our last game was in Round 10, so I'll go from that one. In: Sam Fisher, Brodie Smith, Tom Bellchambers Out: Andrew Mackie, Touk Miller, Chad wingard There were changes to last week's team, and some might ask why that was when there was no game played. Zach Tuohy was rewarded for his great game in the ressies, coming in for Mackie who was rested last week. And Tom Bellchambers came in for Mason Cox because we wanted to show him off as our big ticket signing at our first home game since we picked him up mid season, purely for promotional purposes. It seems to have brought in the fans through the turnstiles, but we didnt expect him to actually end up playing. Here is our team: Def: Lynden Dunn 91 Sam Fisher 61 0 Zach TUOHY 116 Brodie SMITH 69 0 Mid: Brett Deledio 139 Chris Masten (VC) 104 Touk Miller 0 Nathan Jones 97 Mitch WALLIS 82 0 Ruc: Tom HICKEY 0 Andrew Mackie - oop 45 Fwd: Tom Bellchambers 0 Taylor Walker 78 Chad Wingard 99 Allan CHRISTENSEN 71 Jeremy Cameron 125 0 Int: Shannon Hurn (C) 71 Cameron GUTHRIE 90 Levi CASBOULT 0 As was kind of expected, Bellchambers didnt end up getting up for the game, so Wingard came back in... and Hickey was also a late withdrawal, with Mackie filling in admirably in the ruck! We won a close one, 1338 to 1315. anthak wrote: dmandrews wrote: Anthony, well done on winning a great game in which the Gariwerd Cockatoos got the edge over the Cradle Mountain Devils 1,338 to 1,315. Despite the loss I am happy with how the Devils performed, surpassing their benchmark score of 1,300 points for one of the rare times in 2015, however questions are being asked of the Cradle Mountain coach and match committee, in particular their decision to select Tom Boyd as the ruck emergency, knowing he would have to play unless Toby Nankervis was a late inclusion. The choice of ruck emergency ended up being the deciding factor with the Cockatoos outscoring the Devils by 29 points in a match-up between two out of position players, Mackie (45) versus Boyd (16). Shortly after the game began the Cradle Mountain match committee realised they should have selected Boyd's housemate, Nick Vlastuin as the ruck emergency, Vlastuin, also out of position would have scored 48 points and got the Devils over the line by nine points. Despite being in 13th position and winning only four games Cradle Mountain have a percentage slightly above 100 due to being flat-track bullies and their four wins being by over 100 points, whilst lacking composure in close games and losing all five games decided by less than 100 points, including four games by less than 45 points, 31 points in Round 2, 27 points in Round 3, 44 points in Round 8 and 23 points in Round 12. Cradle Mountain are confident they can perform better in the final five rounds of the 2015 ORFFA season than they have for most of the season and wont be surprised if they finish the season with a flurry, however given that they are three games out of the eight finals aren't even a consideration. Given the way the season is panning out the Devils might fall narrowly short once again and work their way up to ninth which would surely earn them the title of ‘the Richmond of the ORFFA.' Good summary Dean. Very happy to have snuck home with the close win. I had been looking at scores from both of our players through the weekend and thinking it would be a close one. That brings up our 5th win of the season, which is the same as what we achieved for all of last season. Hopefully we can get another win in the next 5 weeks to see that we are improving. Really good consistent batch of scores Ant. Lots of good efforts across the board. And Lids is in fine form right now. High half-forward and is playing really well.

Lids has been playing mainly midfield for Gariwerd. He's really relished his move back onto the ground after coming off the bench for most of last season.
Round 13, @ Larrikin Lagoon We travelled down to the swamp and put on a fairly good performance, but couldnt quite get the job done. Larrikin Lagoon won 1338 - 1310... Hickey was once again a late withdrawal and Mackie didnt do too badly himself as the ruck replacement, but he couldnt stop Goldstein from doing as he pleased. Goldstein just did whatever he wanted and racked up a huge 221 points on his own, which ultimately proved too much to overcome. We need Hickey to come good. We keep giving him every chance to get up for each game, but he just doesnt quite make it each week. There was only 1 change this week, but it was reversed on matchday, so we kinda had an unchanged lineup after our win last week. [span style='background-color: #eeeeee;Round 14 (AFL Rd 17) - Surnames & Nicknames We welcomed bottom of the ladder Whitsunday down to Gariwerd for this week's match. And they did enough to get the win against us, 1258 - 1342. A disappointing loss for the Cockies. After some patchy form, we dropped Brodie Smith for this week, and brought in Tom Hickey again. But as was the case last week as well, the change was reversed on matchday as Hickey once again didnt get up for the game. Brodie Smith came into the team out of position in the ruck and did ok. We have once again tried to bring in Tom Hickey for his first game since Round 10, just prior to the midseason break. Iron Knob Codpieces 1230 lost to Gariwerd Cockatoos 1323 Gariwerd returned to their favorite camping ground in Iron Knob, and the familiar surroundings may have helped as the Cockatoos looked completely at ease on the still makeshift oval in the mine with the granite 50m arcs. Iron Knob unsuccessfully attempted to get Ablett up for the game, but as expected he was a late withdrawal, with youngster De Goey (44) coming in. Gariwerd finally had an actual ruckman to play this game, with Hickey (71) coming in and completely outplaying his opposition in Hale (39) in a completely unexpected win for Gariwerd. I suppose we better update what happened in the who cares cup. All teams not in the finals were drawn to play each other in the first week of the who cares cup, and as the team who finished 9th, we got to play the wooden spooners - the Gundagai Grasshoppers. For some reason all games were on neutral territory, except this one. We had to travel to Gundagai. This from the Commish, Lenh: ' [span style='font-size: 14px; color: #000000;All games will be at neutral venues, except for the Gariwerd vs Gundagai game. Unfortunately for Gariwerd the Gundagai coach is a proclaimed Collingwood supporter, and the AFL equalisation process requires that all Collingwood affiliated teams play their finals at home in their home strip, regardless of whom they are playing, Given the Hoppers are spotting the Cockatoos 200 points the impact is likely to be nil.[span style='font-size: 14px; color: #434343;' We played a heap of kids in this game: anthak wrote: As has been the case in all previous Who Cares Cups for Gariwerd, we have swung the changes... IN: Angus Litherland, Matt Crouch, Touk Miller, Levi Casboult, Ben Newton, Harry Cunningham OUT: Shannon Hurn, Nathan Jones, Chris Masten, Jeremy Cameron, Brett Deledio, Andrew Mackie. We are expecting there may also be a couple of late changes, with all 4 emergencies travelling with the team just in case. Quite remarkably, the kids did better than alright anthak wrote: Man, I waited until the who cares cup to score over 1500 for the first time ever! Damn Even playing the kids too! Players that did NOT play for me, scored: Sam Fisher 107 Brett Deledio 103 Andrew Mackie 93 Nathan Jones 86 And I also noticed that big Mason Cox kicked 5 goals in the VFL this week Here are the players that did play for me: Def: Lynden Dunn 82 Zach TUOHY 125 Shannon Hurn 62 Brodie SMITH 108 Angus LITHERLAND 0 0 Mid: Mitch WALLIS 108 Cameron GUTHRIE 141 Nathan Jones 0 Matt Crouch 98 Touk Miller 72 0 Ruc: Tom HICKEY 121 0 Fwd: Taylor Walker 114 Allan CHRISTENSEN 121 Jeremy Cameron 60 Levi CASBOULT 0 Chad Wingard 122 0 Int: Ben NEWTON 78 Harry Cunningham 111 Brett Deledio 0 Im obviously pretty happy to top 1500 for the first time But who cares, right? haha and we won the game 1523 to 1161. Which saw us progress to week 2. In the semi/prelim, we were drawn to play Charlies Opening at Gariwerd. And we planned for a rave: anthak wrote: Bandit wrote: We having another rave party Ant? It's at your home ground Sounds good mate. Who cares about the game. Lets make it a 2 day event and play the game through the middle as a bit of a sideshow. Jeff Mills and Troy Pierce have both already confirmed they will be able to DJ! More big names expected to follow... But bad news. This report from the blog thread: 'In the who gives a stuff (Zac Dawson) cup, Charlie's Opening accounted for Gariwerd when the setup for the dance party didn't arrive, leaving Timmy Trumpet having to play sans backing tracks.' After bringing all our best players back into the side, we lost that week, 1191 to 1246. So that was it for the who cares cup in 2015 for the Cockatoos ! The players decided to have a quietish mad monday this season, much to the dismay of Mason Cox who had been really looking forward to it all season. and theyre all having a well earned rest now, staying away from the club in the leadup to the trade period. There have not been any players who have requested to be traded which is nice.
just realised that the week I scored over 1500, I averaged more than 100 pts per player from all the 19 Gariwerd players that week. the 19 players scored 1912, which is an average of 100.6 ppg per player. and Mason Cox kicked 5 goals in the VFL that week - his best haul of the season Good week for the Cockies. Must have been the sledging from Snoz
still disappointed this thread hasn't transferred over to the new site very well. Have been a bit tardy in my updates since then. there have been a lot of changes to the gariwerd squad that I should update in here...
2016 has started! Round 1 is complete. We started with an away trip to Nunawading. And we got a win: 1325 to 1161 D: Mackie 54, BSmith 94, Mathieson 0 DNP, Hurn 66 (Tuohy 86) M: Steven 101, Guthrie 72, NJones 90, Polec 60 (Cunningham) R: Hickey 157 F: Wingard 125, Christensen 93, Walker 76, TMiller 76 (JStewart) I: MCrouch 96, Wallis 79 (Casboult) Votes: 5 - Tom Hickey 4 - Jack Steven 3 - Allen Christensen 2 - Chad Wingard 1 - Cam Guthrie
Ive just looked through this mess of a thread (still so sad about this thread) and found what I was looking for. We traded in Tom Bellchambers in the Mid Season Break of the 2015 season, from Marble Bar for a 2nd round PSD draft pick. As mentioned in this comment back in June 2015, Tom then injured himself at the first training session in Gariwerd. It was a serious injury, but he has done well in rehab and we are very pleased to see that he will be able to line up this weekend, Round 6 2017 for his cocky debut! Well done Tom
It has been a long time since we have posted any updates in this thread. After we had 5 players retire at the end of 2020, it looks like we will have another 5 or so players retire this season as well. We thank all players for their service to the club and wish them well for their futures. Despite the changing of the guard, we still managed to qualify for finals in 2021, and we hope to work our way through this period and stay competitive each season.
We have a sentimental trade to announce to our members. After trading out one of our gun players to Iron Knob at the end of the 2014 season, we have now traded him back in as a veteran for what might be his last ORFFA season. We drafted Robbie Gray with the 171st pick in the inaugural ORFFA draft. He played three seasons for the club, winning the club B&F in 2014, before we traded him out at the end of that season to the 2014 Premiers, the Iron Knob Codpieces. We thought Robbie would enjoy premiership success himself at Iron Knob, but despite finishing top-4 the next two seasons, and then making the finals the next three seasons after that, he never did get that premiership at the Knob. Now he returns to Gariwerd where it all began, and we hope he can experience finals footy again in what will likely be his final season before retirement. Welcome back Robbie!
