Thanks to TiB, I learned how to fix it up Now for our 4th and final delisting... Stevie Milne. On draft eve, we've got some HUGE news to announce... But firstly, we want to take this opportunity to have a closer look at our delisted players. And it is linked to our news too... So, the 4 players we've let go are James Sellar, Matt Thomas, Alwyn Davey and Stevie Milne. Milne was probably the hardest choice to make, as he's certainly got a good year or two left in him - and our reserves team will definitely miss him ... He was our reserves B&F last season, seemingly playing his best games when not in our senior side; he just couldn't back up those good performances whenever we gave him a run in the seniors, and it cost him in the end. Alwyn Davey was also a very tough decision, as he was promoted to our leadership group midway through the year and was great to have around the club. He even scored our goal of the year too. Thanks for all the good times Alwyn and all the best in the future. The much maligned James Sellar was actually a good bloke to have around the club and his DPP came in handy more than once. He was a bit of a favorite of the coaches, but not really up to ORFFA standard and was the first cut when we had to choose 4 players to let go. Last, but certainly not least, was matt Thomas. What a rollercoaster year he had. Started out as our VC, but got scared on our trip down the Pit and had to withdraw from the team, couldnt get over the trauma in time for our next match and subsequently went on a sole searching mission back to Melbourne, even playing a game for his old junior club. He eventually came back to Gariwerd and trained for a few weeks, and despite being dumped from the leadership group altogether, he did win back some respect from his clubmates, before coming back into the seniors late in the season. Lots of dramas though, and we couldn't take the risk with him for another year, so we have to say goodbye. TiB tried to draft him midseason last year, obviously not realising he was still contracted to us, even while on leave of absence from the team; so TiB, if you're game, you can have him now. Now for our big news story! So, we kept this pretty quiet, but Kurt Tippett asked us many weeks ago to be traded or delisted. After a lot of negotiations with Kurt and his management, we have been unable to convince Kurt to remain a Cockatoo, but against his wishes, we also chose not to trade or delist him. Kurt is still standing by his decision, and the club and Kurt have decided that he will sit out the first 10 rounds of the upcoming season, where we may trade or delist him midseason. During this time, we plan to let Kurt head back home to QLD, or NSW, or wherever he's from, and have a good hard think about if he can commit to the club into the future. We will be inviting him back at some stage, to open up communication again, and we have absolute faith that we can come to some sort of an agreement for Kurt to play out the second half of the season with Gariwerd. Tomorrow, the preseason draft starts and we plan to override this bad news with some much needed hype for our fans by talking up our draftees much more than deserved. We have picks 9, 20, 26 and 63.
Ok, so the draft is well and truly underway and we have made our first 3 (of 4) selections.... <p style='font: inherit; We've got a fairly long wait until our next pick, so we want to take this opportunity to introduce our players we've acquired so far. <p style='font: inherit; We have picks 9, 20, 26 and 63. <p style='font: inherit; <p style='font: inherit; <p style='font: inherit; At pick 9, we chose the youngster,[span style='font: inherit;Jimmy Toumpas. <p style='font: inherit; <p style='font: inherit; He's a 19 year old midfielder from South Australia, who averaged a whopping 22 disposals per match in just 54% game time for SA at last years U18 champs, and he had the best disposal efficiency of the 22 best ball winners at the championships. Toumpas has also had a taste of senior football, playing 10 senior SANFL games across the last two seasons, even kicking an important goal in the closing stages of his clubs 2011 grand final win. <p style='font: inherit; Our recruiters had him ranked in the top 5 players available in the draft and were absolutely stoked that he was still available at our first pick. <p style='font: inherit; <p style='font: inherit; <p style='font: inherit; At pick 20, we shored up our forward line after the shock of knowing we're without Tippett for at least the first 10 games this year, and picked[span style='font: inherit;Sam Blease. <p style='font: inherit; <p style='font: inherit;Blease is a 22 year old former 1st round AFL draft pick who has been dogged by injuries, having only played 21 AFL games in his 4 seasons. He has an interesting achievement of having been nominated for the Rising Star award in each of the last two seasons and is definitely a star on the rise! He is a DPP Mid/Fwd and is an elite goal scorer for a midfielder, scoring at least 1 goal in 14 of 16 games last year, including a high of 5 in one game. <p style='font: inherit; After recruiting one of the best youngsters available in the draft with our first pick, we were happy to recruit Blease, who is slightly older and someone we see as on the verge of a break-out season. and after delisting 2 forwards and the issues we are experiencing with Tippett, it was really important to grab a forward who is ready to play when called upon. <p style='font: inherit; <p style='font: inherit; <p style='font: inherit; Our 3rd pick in the draft came just 6 picks later where we selected 27 year old<strong style='font: inherit;Tom Murphy[/b]at pick 26. <p style='font: inherit; <p style='font: inherit; As a Hawk, Tom Murphy rated above average for intercept possessions, intercept marks and spoils - all able to influence a Supercoach score quite well - and we anticipate that he will have more opportunities to gather these types of stats this year now that he has moved on from the Hawks. <p style='font: inherit; With the impression our recruiters had about the pool of decent defenders being small and our need for a defender, we had to swoop on Murphy now as it was too much of a risk to wait until our last pick at 63. <p style='font: inherit; <p style='font: inherit; <p style='font: inherit; <p style='font: inherit; <p style='font: inherit; So we're taking a break from the draft for a while now and look forward to seeing what is still available when we next walk onto the podium.
We've made our final selection in the 2013 Pre-season Draft. <div>At 63 we chose Sydneysider Setanta O'hAilpin. <div> <div> <div> anthak wrote: Lenh191 wrote: With Pick 63 Gariwerd select Setanta O'hAilpin of the GWS Thanks for posting this on my behalf Len. Gariwerd are happy to get this Syndeysider, come Irishman, come Sydneysider. I'd been thinking about him ever since I read an article last year about how Sheedy expected him to take over where Falou left off - presumably he meant the player whose teammates would only ever reluctantly pass the ball to. I have been a bit concerned about his injury, but I noticed today that he's been picked to play this weekend, so that's a good sign. A big reason why we grabbed Setanta is for his DPP R/F. We now have 3 rucks and enough forwards. That's it for us in this draft. We're happy with the 4 players we've managed to pick up, and look forward now to working out who to delist midseason. Thanks for your awesome work with this draft Len. I really appreciate the time you've put in to this. The thread with the pool of available players was a godsend, and fwiw, as I mentioned somewhere else, I was particularly impressed with how quickly you had the OP updated throughout. Well done mate and thank you. Once again, we've gone for positional depth with this one. We only had 2 ruckmen, and have a few concerns in our forward line, so Setanta's DPP of R/F suits us well, and he should be in line for regular games this season after overcoming his injured knee he sustained last season. As you can see from the pic, he's quitefiery, so we'll be aiming to harness that and channel it into something productive for the footy club.

Key players: Brett Deledio will be chained to the midfield this year, though he is looking forward to escaping defence. Chris Masten and Adam Cooney join him in the middle. Burgoyne, Hurn and rising star Brodie Smith lead the defence, while Bundy Christensen, Mitch Clark and Brown Paper Bag Tippett are the keys up forward. Youngsters Zac Smith and Nathan Vardy hold down the ruck positions, with help from the newly acquired Irishman O'Hailpin. Potential X-Factors: Nick Lower and Koby Stevens both moved east over summer in a bid to continue their careers. Their fortunes at the Bulldogs' kennel could play a key role in the Cockatoos' 2013 success. Jimmy Toumpas could make an immediate impact as well. Question Marks: More question marks at Gariwerd than the Riddler's outfit. Robbie Gray, Blease, and Clark are battling injury. Tippett won't play until halfway through the year and Adam Cooney's fitness has long been a sore point. What impacts will these players have in 2013? And how will Lower, Stevens, Tippett and Thomas Murphy go at Gariwerd after shifting AFL teams in the off-season? Summary:The Cockies are just about impossible to get a read on in the pre-season, with injuries, absences and players at new clubs all potentially having a massive impact. If coach Anthak can muster a fit team on the park consistently, the Cockatoos might shock a few teams. If not, Setenta O'Hailpin could be dealing out quite a few more bum kickings to teammates.

We didnt keep score, but the seniors were considered the winners during our aftermatch discussion as the consensus was that they provided more highlights and longer kicking. Brett Deledio was declared Man of the Match and looks in fine form leading into the season proper, while Koby Stevens and Jaspar Pittard both impressed for the Magoos and Kurt Tippett played brilliantly in his last game for a while and possibly his last game for the club, as he has headed home now as previously discussed that he would after this game.
We've just had an awesome training session after todays decision by the ORFFA Commision to test a rolling lockout style team selection process for the Harold Holt round. We were able to rest many players, knowing that we don't have to make a decision on their availability until the second week of the round, and Kobe Stevens particularly is hopeful that the extended rest will give him a better chance of selection. Shannon Hurn, Chris Masten and Matt De Boer were all in fine form today as they pressed for initial selection for our first game of the season proper.
