Long ago, Ngurunderi's two wives ran away from him, and he was forced to follow them. He pursued them and as he did so he crossed Lake Albert and went along the beach to Cape Jervis. When he arrived there he saw his wives wading half-way across the shallow channel which divided Naroongowie from the mainland. He was determined to punish his wives, and angrily ordered the water to rise up and drown them. With a terrific rush the waters roared and the women were carried back towards the mainland. Although they tried frantically to swim against the tidal wave they were powerless to do so and were drowned. An unofficial community of sealers and others existed on Kangaroo Island from 1802 to the time of South Australia's official settlement in 1836. The sealers were rough men and several kidnapped Aboriginal women from Tasmania and mainland South Australia. The women were kept prisoner as wives and virtual slaves. Three Aboriginal women tried to escape and swim back to the mainland; one is on record as having survived the journey. Thanks TiB for the sterling intro! Firstly, hats off to BigLance for drafting, moulding and flogging this bunch of misfits into what seems on the surface to be a pretty good team. The new coaching and conditioning group are currently assessing the list and have big plans to make the team a force to be reckoned with over the coming seasons. Team relocation began yesterday and although the group was reluctant to leave the cosy climate of the Coomealla sporting ground, they begrudgingly donned their leg shackles and boarded the team bus for the pilgrimage south. Spirits soon lifted when Nic Nat got the group belting out the clubs theme song ("Footy" by Spiderbait) as we endured the rollercoaster ferry ride across Backstairs passage. Although most lost their lunches, you couldn't wipe the smiles off their faces by the time we docked at Kangaroo Island (affectionately termed "The Rock"). The group is settling into our temporary clubrooms at Larrikin Lagoon Sporting Complex, unfortunately the great fires of 2007 all but decimated our previously oppulent empire and we are having to resort to an underground bunker fashioned out of paddock picked limestone rocks and feral pig faeces. It's not much but we call it home. Team origins - many maybe wondering as to the origins of our esteemed club nickname. The "Lefties" moniker has arisen from the necessary evolution of predominant left-foot kicking within playing group over the eons. This has been brought on by the trademark "depressions" within the natural playing surface of the Lagoon sporting ground, whereby seasonal inundation often floods the right-foot goal kicking pockets at each end of the ground. Opposing sides visiting the island should not feel disavantaged by this as studded gumboots are available for hire (one size fits all), snorkelling gear can also be loaned for those in and under type on-ball midfielders. As head coach, I will be analysing the list in detail over the coming days and will look to post my team with players available for trade. As someone fairly new to this game i'm not looking to trade too heavily prior to the draft, especially with delistings and retirements still rolling out. In any case, happy to field any proposals. The machete was wielded through the midfield, and although our current best mids are still nudging the wrong side of 25, a platform is being developed.
