I had the old spreadsheet out and had about 30 prospects highlighted across all lines, though I knew I needed a forward and that I'd need to trade something to move up the draft to get a forward. Once Walters was ruled out for the year my hand was forced. McGlynn was top of my forwards list, with Simon nailing the second guy on my forwards list (Cameron). Jackson Merrett and Lloyd from Richmond were the other two on the list - but McGlynn was pretty much who I targeted from 4 or so weeks out. With the trade of McKenzie, and all the other injuries to my defenders (I had 1 fit defender before entering the draft) I knew I had to pick a defender. I had a list of five - one (Dempster) was nabbed early, I grabbed Bews, Pedersen was also on the list (and Chels grabbed him the pick after mine) and the fourth defender on my list was, much to my chagrin, taken a couple of picks back - Ben Sinclair (bloody good pick up - well done!) There is still one more defender out there on my list that hasn't been taken - it'll be interesting to see if he is. As for Mids - I had Matty White the top ranked there. Have taken a big risk moving McKenzie on, and as Ant will attest, I've had second and third thoughts about that since, given injuries to Gibson, Frawley and McPharlin, as well as clouds over Rance. But I needed a forward urgently so I had to take a chance. Hopefully Frawley and McPharlin are fit and ready to go in a couple of weekends, Rance is OK, Bews keeps playing and Walker keeps playing well. Otten and Seedsman getting games post-injury would be handy too! I may be forced to swing a trade for a defender in our brief trade window post draft - I'm considering a couple of prospects maybe.

Not a great deal of research this draft, compared to previous ones. During delistments period, I had a rough list of players I would be willing to have in my squad (ie, who I'd prefer over players I already had) and I was adding names to the list as delistments were announced. That helped me decide how many players to delist. Draft wise, I haven't planned extensively at all. Just in the lead up to my pick I looked at who was available and created a short list of about 6-10 players and then read heaps of news about each one, some more than others. And made a decision. With where my list is at, team positional balance is not high on my list of priorities. I'm mainly just looking for best available, no matter what position, but not as simply as that. This definition of 'best' used here is based on my personal assessment, considering a number of undisclosed criterion - age, scoring potential etc etc. I figure i can fine tune the balance of positions in a couple of years. I sort of need a ruck, cause the only ruck in my squad has a LTI, but I'm not necessarily going to pick a ruck. In saying that, I did have 3 or 4 rucks that I looked closely at for my first pick, and I may pick one with my final pick if I deem them the right pick.
Howdy, sorry for the delay. My fellow Tasmanian took my ideal selection in Golden Balls... but that;s ok. I am going pure backup here... welcome back Heath 'Reg' Grundy to the Spelunkers for pick 34

As is obvious I was looking for defensive cover for 'later in the season' and I hope I got that by trading (Jarryn Geary) and with pick 15 (Cam Pederson). My remaining picks may surprise, they are there to build a younger team and will be guys who I hope will emerge later this year or early next year. If I am right they would probably not be available for me with my place in the draft. BTW, I am interested in what other members set out to achieve and how much research was put in. I know mine was excessive but it has had a payoff already in SC, RDT and FantAfl.

As indicated above we had a final list of players that met our needs that contained 27 names. The list was divided into 3 sections each aimed at one of our three active picks. For pick 4 we obviously only needed 4 names and wanted a good young forward, we secured the #1 listed player for that pick, Shenton. For pick 22 we had identified a need for another young mid and selected best available deliberately avoiding GWS listed talent, despite the first & second players on our list for this pick still being available after considerable angst we took the third listed player in Dumont. The same process has been used for pick 40 and our first choice player for this pick/role is still available as are 15 other very highly rated prospects. I took the entire FA list and put every name under 25 (248 players) through the following checks: Step 1. AFL CD Prospectus - Removed any players not noted ball winners or outstanding an any relevant category, this took 10 - 15 hours Step 2. Read all the reserves summaries and relevant AFL reports on each of the remaining 60 odd players, this took around 75 hours Step 3. Sort the remaining 25 players into a list that reflected their likely availability against my active pick numbers. Step 4. Check the delists, there was only one player added to the list, he is still available and still tempting, he was my 4th option for pick 4. Step 5. Check for any obvious oversights, there was one, we picked him first. I delisted some project players that I felt would either not reach the heights I had hoped for (Ross), were playing terribly in reserves and making themselves almost unselectable (Darley) and wanted to ensure they were replaced by players more likely to succeed. This is probably our last youth focused draft, as the PSD was our last one of those, we will be after players with at least a couple of years in the system going forward (like Yeo and Weller) as our average age is now 22.46, and would be 21.79 if we didn't still have Sewell and Bock, both whom are down to go at the next PSD. Interesting exercise typing this out and revisiting my thoughts, thanks for the prompt chels... Makes me think I am at least borderline OCD though

Sorry about that and then disappearing, I literally had 1 minute to send something off today. At least I know that this guy hasn't been picked (why would he be) PIck 35 - [span style='text-decoration: line-through;]Mark Seaby Andrew Phillips
