The third episode of the Uglies vs Devils finals rivalry is far closer than the first two episodes. To the end of Saturday night the eighth placed Devils had averaged 88.5 points each, an advantage of 5.4 points per player over their Uglies counterparts. Six of the eight Mount Beauty players in action today have averaged 90+ in 2023 compared to just one of the three Cradle Mountain players still to take the field. Unofficial preliminary final score: Mount Beauty Uglies 1,398 defeated Cradle Mountain Devils 1,359 In a high quality preliminary final @bama ’s Mount Beauty Uglies in front of a passionate home crowd including number one ticket holder @HeavyMen have overcome a 17 point half-time deficit to overrun the Cradle Mountain Devils and record a 39 point victory to make the ORFFA Grand Final for the first time in the club’s history. Proven big game performer, Uglies midfielder/forward Dustin Martin scored 158 SuperCoach points in a best afield performance after starting in the forward line. Each team had seven players from their 15 player team reach triple figures including three of their starting midfielders. Mount Beauty were the more consistent team, winning all three of the four player position lines and recorded no sub 50 scores in their 15 player team. The Uglies four highest players were spread across four lines with starting forward Dusty Martin joined in this category by defender Hayden Young (113), midfielder Zac Butters (129) and defender/midfielder Will Day (118) from the Int 1 position. Across the 4 player lines midfielder Scott Pendlebury (114) was Cradle Mountain’s best player. Cradle Mountain had struggled for consistency in the first two thirds of the ORFFA season and only scored 1,250 points twice in the first 12 rounds. To finish the season by scoring 1,250 in five of the club’s last seven games of the season including 1,300+ in both finals was encouraging. We are hoping this will enhance CMD's chances of getting some experienced players that are uncontracted for 2024 including forward Dayne Zorko to sign with the club for next season. CMD’s 1,359 in the preliminary final was their second highest score of the season, yet it wasn’t quite enough against a very impressive Mount Beauty outfit. Entering the weekend Mounty Beauty had played six finals comprised of two finals each against three teams, Cradle Mountain Devils, Gariwerd Cockatoos and Venus Bay Vultures for a record of 1 win and 1 loss against each of these three teams. The Uglies now have a winning finals record overall of 4 wins and 3 losses and are ahead in the ledger against the Devils with 2 wins and 1 loss. In next weekend's 2023 ORFFA Grand Final Mount Beauty will face a club in an ORFFA final for the first time, either the Gundagai Grasshoppers of the Nareewillock Nuffers. ORFFA Grand Final history Minor premiers Gundagai Grasshoppers host the Mount Beauty Uglies in the 2023 ORFFA Grand Final this weekend. It is the second season in a row that @Snoz’s Hoppers have finished on top of the ladder and hosted the Grand Final. @Bama’s Uglies have been on a steady climb over the past three seasons, making the first week of the finals in 2021, followed by a preliminary final berth in 2022 and will now be contesting their first ORFFA Grand Final in 2023. If the Mount Beauty Uglies win the 2023 ORFFA Grand Final it will be the seventh season in a row that a team has won their first ORFFA Premiership. The Gundagai Grasshoppers are one of the teams in this category, having won their first premiership in the COVID-19 impacted 2020 season when finals weren’t played. If the Hoppers triumph this weekend they will become the third ORFFA club to win two premierships, joining Foul Bay Chickens and Larrikin Lagoon Lefties in this category. The Chickens went back-to-back in the first two ORFFA seasons in 2012 and 2013 and the Lefties won consecutive flags in 2015 and 2016. A Hoppers Grand Final victory would result in them becoming the first club to win multiple ORFFA premierships without doing so back-to-back. In each season from 2021 to 2023 two top four teams have played in the Grand Final. This was the exception from 2013 to 2019 with only one of the seven Grand Finals involving two teams that both finished in the top four at the end of the home and away season. In each final the team that finished highest on the ladder at the end of the home and away season hosted the final at their home ground. At least one of the top two teams have made seven of the first 10 Grand Finals. Bizarrely, in two of the three seasons that 1st and 2nd have both missed the Grand Final the bottom two teams from the top eight have played off for the premiership with the seventh placed team hosting and being defeated by the eighth placed team. The home team won four of the first five ORFFA Grand Finals from 2013 to 2017. Foul Bay have been the most dominant ORFFA team in home and away seasons, winning five minor premierships, however when they won the first ORFFA Grand Final in 2013 they finished outside the top two in third place with 13 wins. In the 2013 Grand Final at home the Chickens played phenomenal football to score 1,471 points and defeat the seventh seeded Darraweit Guim Dirigibles by 135 points. Foul Bay’s score still stands today as the record for highest score in an ORFFA Grand Final. After Iron Knob won the minor premiership in 2013 and then missed out on a grand berth the Codpieces were on a mission in 2014 and maintained season long dominance. Iron Knob won all 17 home and away games in 2014, followed by three finals victories to have a perfect 20-0 ORFFA season to win the premiership. One twist in Iron Knob’s record breaking 2014 season is the fact that they didn’t lead the league for points for during the home and away season. The Codpieces ranked second with 23,862 points, being pipped by the Chickens tally of 24,068 points, highlighting that using your energy efficiently pays dividends. The events of the 2015 finals series came completely from left field. With upsets galore the two teams that qualified in 7th and 8th respectively – the Birdsville Battlers and Larrikin Lagoon Lefties each won two finals on the road to set up an unexpected Grand Final match against each other. A year earlier the Lefties only won three games for the entire 2014 season and finished in 17th position. In an absolute thriller the trend of the 2015 finals series continued with the away side emerging triumphant, the Lefties defeated the Battlers by six points 1,294 to 1,288 in the closest Grand Final in ORFFA history. The Lefties finished second at the end of the 2016 home and away season with 15 wins and two losses and went back-to-back, this time winning the Grand Final at home in a low scoring contest against the Venus Bay Vultures by 54 points, 1,192 to 1,138. The Waikikamoocow Incorrigibles missed the 2016 finals, finishing 10th. The Cows started the 2017 season in dismal fashion amassing a tally of just 883 points in Round 1, ranked 17th for the round in a 378 point loss to the Marble Bar Misfits. Maybe the Cows thought it was still pre-season because they only field a team of 11 players including one OOP. The Cows turned things around in dramatic fashion to go on a rampage and won their remaining 16 games of the 2017 ORFFA home and away season to finish on top of the ladder with 16 wins. The Cows advanced to the grand final where they faced their early season nemesis, the Misfits who had finished third. In a classic highly entertaining Grand Final the Cows defeated the Misfits by 20 points, 1,357 points to 1,337 to win the 2017 ORFFA flag. After the second placed Lefties and the first placed Cows won the ORFFA premiership in 2016 and 2017 respectively the script writers decided that things were becoming a bit too predictable and changed tack, reprising the 2015 finals series with a bit of Steven Bradbury thrown in. Marble Bar Misfits and Cradle Mountain finished third and fifth respectively in 2017. The Misfits defeated the Devils in the first week of the 2017 finals on their way to making the Grand Final. The only time during the 2018 season that the Devils and Misfits were both in the top eight was after the final round. The previous time before Round 17 that either side was in the eight was Round 2 for the Devils and Round 6 for the Misfits. From Round 13 to Round 16 the Devils and Misfits were in 9th and 10th position respectively, both teams won in their final round, had some results go their way and snuck into seventh and eighth respectively. The Devils and Misfits in Steve Bradbury fashion rode their luck all the way and both teams won two away finals to set up an unexpected Grand Final. The 2018 Grand Final was the Devils fifth final overall and the first time they played a final at home. With their experience from playing in the previous season’s Grand Final as the away team the Marble Bar Misfits remained more composed and defeated the Devils by 112 points 1,370 to 1,258 to in the 2018 ORFFA title. Venus Bay Vultures were unexpected Grand Finalists in 2016 after finishing the home and away season in eighth place. After their 2016 GF loss to the Lefties the Vultures developed into a powerhouse of the competition. Finishing second on the ladder in 2017 with 15 wins and went undefeated in the 2018 home & away season, winning all 17 games. The top seeded Vultures had a down day in the first week of the 2018 finals, scoring 1,219 points to suffer a 205 point loss to the seventh seeded Cradle Mountain Devils. Venus Bay weren’t as dominant during the 2019 h & a season and finished fifth with 12 wins and also ranked fifth for points for. In the 2019 preliminary final the Vultures had a rematch with CMD, this time on the second seeded Devils home deck. Spurred on by the pain of the previous season’s finals loss the Vultures were unstoppable, inflicting a 361 point defeat on Cradle Mountain, 1,510 to 1,149. Playing their third final of 2019 on the road the Vultures defeated the Foul Bay Chickens by 148 points in the Grand Final, 1,382 to 1,234 to win the 2019 ORFFA premiership. After the Gundagai Grasshoppers spent four years deep in the ORFFA wilderness with three consecutive wooden spoons from 2013 to 2015 followed by a 14th placed finish in 2016 the club returned to the finals in 2017, finishing fourth at the end of the home and away season. The Grasshoppers followed this up with two consecutive third placed finishes in 2018 and 2019 to be the only side to finish in the top four in all three seasons. Due to COVID-19 finals weren’t played in 2020 and the team that finished first at the end of the home and away season won the premiership. The Grasshoppers hit the ground running to score a round-high 1,560 points in Round 1 of the 2020 season and dominated to lead from wire to wire to win the 2020 ORFFA premiership. The Hoppers had a club record 15 wins in 2020 to finish on top of the ladder, one win and points for ahead of the second placed Foul Bay Chickens. The Hoppers average of 1,371.7 points per game in 2020 was an advantage of 84.1 points per game over their nearest rival, the Chickens which highlights how dominant Gundagai were. For the first time in club history Cradle Mountain Devils made back-to-back finals appearances in 2017 and 2018. Following up a fifth place finish in 2017 with a surprise Grand Final berth in 2018 after finishing the h & a season in 7th place. The Devils broke through for their first top four finish in 2019 with a second placed finish and made it three top four finishes in a row, finishing third in 2020 and fourth in 2021. Cradle Mountain peaked at the right time of the 2021 season to average 1,499.5 points per game in winning their first two finals of 2021 to play arch-rival Venus Bay Vultures in a third consecutive finals series. Honours were split across the first two encounters with the seventh seeded Devils on the road upsetting the top of the ladder Vultures in the first week of the 2018 finals. The roles were reversed the following year with the fifth placed Vultures upsetting the Devils at home in the 2019 preliminary final by 361 points. From 2019 to the end of the 2021 ORFFA home and away season the Venus Bay Vultures proved to be a nightmare opponent for Cradle Mountain, winning all four encounters between the two clubs to be the only club the Devils didn’t have a victory against during this period. This trend looked set to continue when the Vultures dominated the early stages of the 2021 Grand Final to lead by 140 points, 377 to 237 at quarter-time. The tide turned early in the second quarter and the Devils began reducing the deficit for the next two quarters before hitting the lead early in the fourth quarter. Cradle Mountain went on to defeat Venus Bay by 72 points 1,466 to 1,394. The Gariwerd Cockatoos finished in the 9th to 14th bracket in each of the ORFAA’s first four seasons from 2012 to 2015. The Cockatoos finished fifth at the end of the 2016 home and away season to break through and make their first finals appearance. From 2016 to 2021 the Cockatoos made the finals five times in six seasons with a best placed finish of fourth in 2018. The Cockatoos had their best home and away season in club history in 2022 to record 14 wins and finished second, points for behind minor premiers the Gundagai Grasshoppers. In a preliminary final the Cockatoos defeated Mount Beauty Uglies by 129 points, 1,455 to 1,326 to set up a Grand Final against the Grasshoppers. The Cockatoos entered the Grand Final in great form, having recorded higher scores than the Hoppers in the first two weeks of the 2022 finals. This finals form carried over into the Grand Final with Gariwerd Cockatoos defeating the Hoppers by 134 points, 1,354 to 1,220 to win the 2022 ORFFA premiership. From 2018 onwards the away team has reigned supreme on ORFFA Grand Final day to win the past four Grand Finals. In each of the past three Grand Finals a team that finished between second and fifth and made the finals for at least three consecutive seasons won the GF as the away side. Uglies head coach @bama and number one ticket holder @HeavyMen will be hoping this trend continues for another season for Mounty Beauty in their fourth consecutive finals appearance. In three consecutive Grand Finals from 2018 to 2021 a team that lost their first ORFFA Grand Final but were good enough to make it back to another Grand Final within a few seasons won the Grand Final at their second attempt. These three teams were the Misfits (premiers in 2018 after losing 2017 GF), Vultures (premiers in 2019 after losing 2016 GF) and Devils (premiers in 2021 after losing 2018 GF). @snoz and the Hoppers will be hoping another pattern continues, if it does it will mean that after losing the 2022 Grand Final the Hoppers will win the 2023 Grand Final and become the third club to win two ORFFA Premierships.
Gundagai Grasshoppers history The Hoppers have been a dominant force in recent seasons and are the only team that has finished in the top four in each of the past seven home and away seasons from 2017 to 2023. Whist Gundagai have been entrenched on one of the upper rungs of the ladder in recent times it hasn’t always been this way. Hoppers Head Coach @snoz is the first one to point out that the Hoppers have three wooden spoons. In the inaugural ORFFA season in 2012 Gundagai finished fourth on the ladder and ranked fifth for points for. The Hoppers changed strategy for their second season and started a rebuild. In a three season period from 2013 to 2015 the Hoopers won three consecutive wooden spoons and had two wins in each season. Gundagai made two giant hops to go from cellar dwellers in 2015 to rise to a top four finish in 2017. In 2016 the Grasshoppers tripled their wins tally from two games to six games and rose four spots on the ladder to finish 14th. Gundagai continued their exponential climb in 2017 to double their wins from six in 2016 to 12in 2017 to finish fourth on the ladder. The Grasshoppers have remained entrenched in the top four ever since. In three seasons from 2017 to 2019 the Grasshoppers were unable to replicate their impressive home and away form in the finals and had a finals record of one win and three losses. With finals unable to be played in 2020 due to COVID-19 the Hoppers were the dominant team, finishing on top of the ladder for the first time and winning their first ORFFA premiership. From 2021 to 2023 Gundagai have been the most consistent team in the finals, making it to at least the Preliminary final in all three seasons. Gundagai’s record during this time is five wins and two losses, with the defeats being to the Devils in a 2021 preliminary final and to the Cockatoos in the 2022 Grand Final. Sandwiched in between these two top eight finishes were three seasons where the Uglies missed the finals and finished between 11th and 13th. After their second top four finish in 2016 Mount Beauty went into freefall, dropping to ninth in 2017 and plummeting to the wooden spoon in 2018. The Uglies then followed the same trajectory the Hoppers did three years earlier to make two giant hops to go from 18th in 2018 to 14th in 2019 and then fourth in 2020. Mount Beauty have been extremely consistent over the past four seasons and after finishing sixth in 2021 have had back-to- back fourth placed finishes in 2022 and 2023. Up until 2022 each time that Mount Beauty made the finals they played to their seeding. After finishing fourth at the end of the 2023 ORFFA home and away season the Uglies have surpassed their seeding by progressing to the Grand Final. Mount Beauty have played seven finals and have a record if four wins and three finals. In the 2023 Grand Final the Grasshoppers will become just the fourth team that the Uglies have played a final against. Wonderful stuff @dmandrews - a beautiful walk down memory lane. So that it is recorded somewhere prominent, I believe that currently the cows hold the record for the longest winning streak in ORFFA history. As noted by Dean, in the flag winning 2017 season the cows lost the opening game of the season (v The Misfits) but then won the remaining 16 H&A matches and the three finals. In 2018 we won the first 8 games in the H&A to take the streak to 27 (see posts #248 and 249 in the Waikikamoocow Incorrigibles thread). The team that ended the streak was sNoZ's 'hoppers who have gone on to become a fixture in ORFFA finals campaigns. PS - from my weekly comments on the cows (when I had enough time to do this) and I find that in round 13: "Another subdued Sunday evening n the Bulls Hit Tav after the Cows ground out a squeeky win at Mt Beauty. Too be fair bama's boys would have won had they not had two (2) donuts. The uglies have turned a corner. Does that make them the Mt Beauty Beauties?"

No rucking way! Hoppers got rolled. Great contest coaches, I need to take some advice from both these guys on how to bottom out and get to the pinnacle, and stay there. Grats to @bama
