Three donuts down at Mount Beauty from Riewoldt, Boyd and Leuenberger and two first 10 minute injuries and a total of nine points between Bartel and Ziebell, plus another injury halfway through the second and 20 points for Stokes down at Chookland and it was a last man standing battle from there. Good thing that Roughead and Selwood outnumbered Cotchin two to one, because that was essentially the match in a nutshell. The other 20 players needn't have bothered showing up. Hope your players get back soon and I hope that I actually have some depth in my squad to call upon because I think I am going to need it.

Eight tons (incl 4 in the middle) versus five was probably the difference on the day. The Tom Lynch face off was a torrid affair with the Powlett version taking the honours with a 3 goal haul. Coupled with D Pearce and Garlett, the fantasy world are sitting up and taking notice of this under-the-radar forward line. A solid effort all round by the home team with nothing under 70 but underwhelming starts to Priddis and Cunnington has us concerned as we head into a tough couple of games. Whitsunday can consider themselves a touch unlucky with Wines injured late and Crozier sub. The late, almost unexpected, inclusion of Nathan Hrovat however gave the Warriors an extra 61 points and was almost enough to sneak home with a win. We also had four teams who had averaged 1300 points per game or more. This year: all teams averaging 1000+ a game. And only two teams averaging 1300+ so far (one of them only a few points over the threshold). This league is evening up, talent is being spread around a little more evenly, and arguably team depth is becoming as important (or more important) than outright talent, given the injuries that have occurred thus far. The improvement in the teams at the foot of the ladder - Gundagai, the Lefties, the Lilacs - is becoming apparent. The Hoppers and Lilacs are beginning to see the benefits of savvy high draft picks and the investment in youth (often at the expense of trading away still functional older players). The Lilacs' list was hugely unbalanced even 12 months ago, with retiring veterans impacting on the team's depth and performances in the second half of last year - forcing it to pursue youth. The Hoppers chose a similar path throughout the previous trade period after time near the foot of the ladder. Marble Bar's youth are starting to come through as well. The Lefties have improved their talent through some trading for good veterans as well as some kids. Change is coming.

We also had four teams who had averaged 1300 points per game or more. This year: all teams averaging 1000+ a game. And only two teams averaging 1300+ so far (one of them only a few points over the threshold). This league is evening up, talent is being spread around a little more evenly, and arguably team depth is becoming as important (or more important) than outright talent, given the injuries that have occurred thus far. The improvement in the teams at the foot of the ladder - Gundagai, the Lefties, the Lilacs - is becoming apparent. The Hoppers and Lilacs are beginning to see the benefits of savvy high draft picks and the investment in youth (often at the expense of trading away still functional older players). The Lilacs' list was hugely unbalanced even 12 months ago, with retiring veterans impacting on the team's depth and performances in the second half of last year - forcing it to pursue youth. The Hoppers chose a similar path throughout the previous trade period after time near the foot of the ladder. Marble Bar's youth are starting to come through as well. The Lefties have improved their talent through some trading for good veterans as well as some kids. Change is coming. yeah, thats interesting to look at. 3 games is still a small sample tho, but still worthwhile. ive also found that theres been a lot less consistency from some individual teams this season too, but yeah, its still early days. itll be interesting to see how the teams settle down into the mid season break.
