It’s a massive three weeks in the ORFFA. Not only do all the coaches get the chance to touch up their team lists with the mid season draft, but the ORFFA coaches also get stuck into each other with a state of origin series.

Given the teams are spread far and wide, from Iron Knob to the land of the Long White Cloud… choosing exactly what constituted a players ‘State of Origin’ and what the make up of the teams was going to be was not straight forward. After some debate (well let’s be honest, I just decided it), The ORFFA teams split up into the teams from Vic/Tas, and the Rest!

The Vic/Tas teams consisted of players from the following sides:

    Charlie's Opening Spelunkers
    Cradle Mountain Devils
    Darraweit Guim Dirigibles
    Gariwerd Cockatoos
    Lovely Banks Lilacs
    Mount Beauty Uglies
    Nunawading Nuffers
    Venus Bay Vultures
    Wineglass Bay Packers

The Rest (to be referred to periodically in the rest of this post as ‘The Stench’) were comprised of:

    Birdsville Battlers
    Foul Bay Cheaters Chickens
    Gundagai Grasshoppers
    Iron Knob Codpieces
    Larrikin Lagoon Lefties
    Marble Bar Misfits
    Wagga Wagga Wombats
    Waikikamoocow Incorrigibles
    Whitsunday Warriors

The Stench coaches have been talking up their hopes during the week, and when you look at their lineup it is bloody impressive, however the Big VT is quietly confident that they can knock off the Rest if they perform to their best.

There are some tantalising matchups in the squads, so let’s have a look at the teams line by line :

    Vic Tas Backs:
Sam Docherty (Venus Bay), Kade Simpson (Nunawading), Matthew Boyd (Mt Beauty), Alex Rance (Darraweit Guim), Emergency : Jasper PITTARD (Venus Bay)

    The Stench Forwards:
Josh J. Kennedy (Whitsunday), Daniel Wells (Birdsville), Leigh Montagna (Larrikin Lagoon), Lance Franklin (Wagga Wagga), Emergency : Josh Jenkins (Wagga Wagga)

Vic/Tas go for speed versus size, with Rance the only big guy to be lining up against JJK and Buddy. Docherty, Simpson and Boyd will provide plenty of run out of the back line, but I tell you what, if the Rest get some open ball, it will be hard to stop the marking power of that forward line.

    Midifields:
    Vic/Tas:
Scott Pendlebury (Cradle Mountain), Trent Cotchin (Mt Beauty), Jack Steven (Gariwerd), Stephen Coniglio (Darraweit Guim), Emergency: Josh P. Kennedy (Nunawading)

    The Stench:
Patrick Dangerfield (Foul Bay), Daniel Hannebery (Waikikamoocow), Lachie Neale (Gundagai), Gary Ablett (Iron Knob), Emergency Joel Selwood (Foul Bay)

Wow… just bloody wow. When JPK and Selwood can’t even make it into the midfield you know there is some quality there. Out and out class one both lines and it will be great to watch these two great lines go at it like one armed bricklayers.

    Ruck:
Vic/Tas : Max GAWN (Mt Beauty)
The Stench : Todd Goldstein (Larrikin Lagoon)

The beard versus the best ruckman in the league. The Rest have the edge on this line, and if Goldy shoves it down the throat of Danger, Ablett etc, the the Vic Tas guys might get a bit nervous. Gawn if he goes big will go REAL big… could be the game winner

    Vic/Tas Forwards:
Zac Merrett (Charlie's Opening), Dustin MARTIN (Mt Beauty), Brett Deledio (Venus Bay), Dayne Zorko (Cradle Mountain), Emergency Jack GUNSTON (Charlie's Opening)

    The Stench Backs:
Heath Shaw (Foul Bay), Josh Gibson (Larrikin Lagoon), Jimmy Bartel (Foul Bay), Rory Laird (Marble Bar) Emergency Corey Enright (Birdsville)

Quality ball skills and just outright speed with the Vic/tas lineup. Dusty will be bringing the chopsticks. Similar to Vic/tas, the Rest have gone for one big guy in Gibson, relying on the run and carry of Heater, Jimmy Bartel and Laird to stretch the legs of the Vic/Tas forwards

    Vic/ Tas Bench:
Steele Sidebottom (Mt Beauty), Rory Sloane (Wineglass Bay), Emergency: Luke PARKER (Venus Bay)

    The Stench Bench (lol)
Tom Mitchell (Waikikamoocow), Callan Ward (Marble Bar), Adam Treloar (Birdsville)

Rumour has it Daylight was a chance at getting a call up for the Rest, but Coach Len wouldn’t release him to play as he has been his standout performer this year. Loads of quality coming off the pine for both sides, with Sloane getting the nod over a slightly out of form Parker for the Vic/Tas guys.

It’s going to be a cracking three weeks… with some great banter and hopefully some record ORFFA scores.

Have at it ladies and gentlemen.... GO THE BIG VT!!

Round 2 update (one game short as I am on a plane tomorrow)

Well well well, what do we have here. The Rest thought they had this in the bag, but Vic/Tas have shown enough in round 2 to show that it will indeed come down to next weeks games.

After the first round, Vic/Tas were 536/5 and The Rest were 1266/12. This round saw Vic/Tas roll out a fair few players... and there was a few surprises at the selection table.

Vic/Tas saw Zorko as late withdrawal, and the Stench were without Daniel Wells. In reality it will not have hurt either side too much, with Zorko the Magnificent banking a 108 from Round 1 and Wells an impressive 123.

Round 2 saw 10 of the Vic/Tas boys make their bow for the State of Origin team, and some responded with aplomb, and some were bloody awful. Sloane (145), Dusty (129), Lids (110), Simpson (100) and Docherty (110) can hold their heads high, but Rance (76), Pendlebury (87), Steven (79) and Sidebottom (92) will have to lift in Round 3.

For The Rest, only 3 new players, with Laird (91) serviceable and Joey (115) going large. The little master will be playing tomorrow, but @jimbowan has been pumping his tyres all week so we shall see.

Heater and Bartel were lucky to have banked a decent score in Round 1 as they stunk it up in a big way, but Callan Ward will make @Len happy as he atoned for his first round miss with a much more respectable 122.

As it stands now, Vic/Tas has the jump with 1590/15 with the Rest on 1525/14 with Ablett to come.

The Spin for Vic/Tas: Rance's 76 will be a disappointment against a poor Brisbane unit, will need to fire up next week as will Pendlebury, Cotchin, Steven and Sidebottom. Coniglio's 138 will make @chris88 smile.

The Spin for The Rest: Gibson gets a chance to remedy his poor first round 49 tomorrow, Goldy has banked a ton, which will be less than what they hoped for. There might be the odd bead of sweat on the foreheads tomorrow with GAJ runs out.

The Game is well and truly on Ladies and Gentlemen... one more game tomorrow and then the final round next week gives players one last chance to improve on their scores.

Like your optimism Banditto, but fleeing from the scene of battle may be your best move so far. As Jimbo promised us the little master took it personally and delivered an (almost) vintage performance. Somehow we (i.e., the rest) know that in the unlikely event we need more than 159 from him, GAJ will come through. BTW, did Jimbo have input into our ruck choice?

Well a fair serve of humble pie was dished up to seat 14K on Emirates flight EK77.

I munched down on it too... as Gary (159) went bang and Gibbo (114) did the same.

So where do we stand... well the fat lady is warming up but it ain't over yet.

The rest stand on a whopping 1749... with some room for improvement but not much.
Still to play (score to beat in brackets): Laird (91), Hannebery (89), Neale (149), Ablett (159), JJK (88), Montagna (115), Buddy (99) and Mitchell (79). Realistically 2 players who should improve, and 2 (JJK and Buddy) who are wildcards and can be heroes or zeroes.

The Vic/Tas guys have 1590 with these guys to come: Boyd (93), Rance (76), Pendlebury (87), Cotchin (99), Steven (79), Gawn (116), Merrett (108), Dusty (129), Lids (110), Sidebottom (92) and Sloane (145). Realistically 4 guys who should improve with Gawn a bit of a wildcard.

If we modify the scores of the players who have played below their average to their average we end up with Vic/Tas on 1723 and The Rest on 1825.

It will be interesting to see what the final result is, but I reckon the crooked bookmakers at ChiefBet have The Rest at very short priced favourites.

      JJK vs Bombers.

Result: Weagles win by 90+ with JJK kicking 10 and cracking 200 SC!

Have to think that Hanners (86) & JJK (88) should easily beat their own score to date.

Titch (79) and Buddy (99) better pull their straps up too or we will send them back to that paltry Vic/Tas mob.

Titch and Dan have received txts from GAJ and Danger querying their previous effort. I understand they have made certain undertakings which suggest that rain, hail or shine the gloves will be off at the SCG.

Pendles, Rance and Boyd all improved markedly on their scores. But I don't think most of the others followed suit for Vic/Tas

In a sad footnote Titch walked off the field on Friday night and said "that should put the Rest past 2000." He seemed genuinely surprised to learn that the challenge ended last week. He muttered something along the lines of "well, I have not seen the result, so you know ..... I guess that means we won."

Finally got around to doing this!

In our last installment of state of origin, you may recall that the situation was the The rest stood on a whopping 1749... with some room for improvement but not much. The Vic/Tas guys had 1590 with a few guns to come.

Well what a final round it was! The Vic/ Tas defence told the fat lady to shut up early on, with Boyd (93 to 127), Rance (76-108) and Simpson (100-128) all improving on their first scores to put the good guys back in with a shout. Then Pendles and Lukey Parker went freaking BANG! with a 161 each and the match was looking incredibly close to me, except Parker was named as a bloody emergency. It all started to go south from there. Jack Steven choked on the occasion, failing to improve on his 79, and Zorko the Magnificent just didn't bloody turn up! Bloody Devils players can't be trusted! The pressure got to the bad guys as well, with Mitchell failing to improve on his 79 so the scoring was left to Dan Hannebery, who responded well, improving his first round score of 86 to a 123.

The final result, Vic/Tas go down by 40 points, 1771 to 1811... a closer match than many would have thought after the second round.

I would like to get people's opinion on the format and if we bother doing it again for next year? I didn't mind doing the scoring etc but just got caught up in real life before I could do the final wrote up, apologies for that.

Format etc all worked for me, might be worth a discussion on wther we keep it in the bye rounds with best of 2 scoring or move it to the vacant round, IF we have another one of them which is not at all certain..
Well done on running and the summary, no wonder it took a while :)
