<p style='background-color: #ffffff;]Finally, after a long and arduous pre season campaign the draft is finally here. Remember the rule folks:
<p style='background-color: #ffffff;]<strong style='font-size: 14px;]Coaches have 24 hours to make their pick. If they fail to do so they will be auto drafted the highest averaging player from 2014 still on the board.[/b]
<p style='background-color: #ffffff;][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;]I think that was it, wasn't it. They're weren't any other rules were there?
<p style='background-color: #ffffff;][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;]Of course, coaches are welcome to pick before then once this thread is up…<strong style='font-size: 14px;]BUT[/b]
<p style='background-color: #ffffff;][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;]If I read anting <strong style='font-size: 14px;]BANG[/b][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;]ing or <strong style='font-size: 14px;]TUTT[/b][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;]ing or <strong style='font-size: 14px;]ANY OTHER SMARTARSE HURRY UP[/b][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;] from other coaches before the official start time of<strong style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;]Friday 27th February at 7pm AEDT [/b][span style='font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; font-family: inherit;]walesy has assured me that I'm fully within my rights to respond with a level of vitriol, smut andbothpersonal and professional denigration never before seen on the likes of this website.
<p style='background-color: #ffffff;][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;]After the start time of course, <strong style='font-size: 14px;]BANG[/b][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;]ing and <strong style='font-size: 14px;]TUTT[/b][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;]ing is fully acceptable. Remember though, we all have lives and families away from TS so everyone keep your pants on even if you managed to draft Petracca for a steal at P14 and want to startshirt cocking in celebration.
<p style='background-color: #ffffff;][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;]Speaking of which; talking points.
<p style='background-color: #ffffff;]<strong style='font-size: 14px;]Christian Petracca[/b][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;]. How far will the kid slide? Sure he's done his knee, but this is a keeper league and no coach drafts a rookie for what they'll achieve in their debut year - right? On the other side of the equation here are a few names - <strong style='font-size: 14px;]Menzel[/b][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;], <strong style='font-size: 14px;]Morabito[/b][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;], <strong style='font-size: 14px;]Patton[/b][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;]. Which is not to say that players (or even thoseexplicitly mentioned) don't, won't or can't come back from a serious knee injury(s) - look at <strong style='font-size: 14px;]Goddard[/b][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;] and <strong style='font-size: 14px;]Malceski[/b][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;] for two off the top of my head, just that it creates a measure of doubt in the minds of fantasy list managers.
<p style='background-color: #ffffff;]<strong style='font-size: 14px;]Stef Martin[/b][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;] is another. We've just seen in the ORFFL a 93ppg RUC traded for a 109ppg MID. On that basis what is a 111ppg RUC worth on the open market? A <strong style='font-size: 14px;]Nat Fyfe[/b][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;]? Yes, there are questions over whether or Martin will be Brisbane's first choice RUC this season, but there are similar doubts on Brisbane other choice in <strong style='font-size: 14px;]Leuenberger[/b][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;]. ORFFL-wise I don't see the big man last beyond Jimcumbilly with the opportunity to handcuff him to theafore mentioned Leuenberger (and thenperhaps make some serious bank on trading out <strong style='font-size: 14px;]Nichols[/b][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;]). The complication to this of course is that Coulta have the pick before them and a RUC combo of <strong style='font-size: 14px;]West[/b][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;] and <strong style='font-size: 14px;]Redden[/b][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;]. Hmmm. Let that sink in.
<p style='background-color: #ffffff;][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;]And while not a player as such, the topic of drafting defenders this year will be…interesting. A sizeable majority of ORFFL teams this year have gone into this draft with less than 6 DEF's. And yet when you look at the draft pool for that position - before or after the delistments, it's as shallow as I've ever seen it. Well, actually not true. Their are plenty of names there, it's just that most of them have seen very little if any senior action and have the scores you'd imagine from that amount of game time. It's my prediction there'll be a <em style='font-size: 14px;]second round rush[span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;] on this position and plenty of speculative late round <strong style='font-size: 14px;]Jackson Allen[/b][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;]-types being selected.
<p style='background-color: #ffffff;][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;]But enough from me, it's over to you guys. Who do you like in the draft? Why do you like them? Where are you thinking of picking them?
<p style='background-color: #ffffff;][span style='font-size: 14px; background-color: #ffffff;]Answers below, please.

Hey lads, I have been thinking about a keeper league for a while now. Have been part of the TS for a few years now and as much as the wife doesn't like it.... I do take it all way too serious...

It would be nice to be considered for a spot in your league!

Given there's a bit of a break in play, seems opportune to give a bit of a summary of the first round of picks, Hornsy-stylez (AND BECAUSE NONE OF YOU RESPONDED TO MY CAREFULLY CRAFTED TALKING POINTS):

- The McGoverness was a shock to me at pick one. Not that he doesn't have the pedigree to go at P1, but because Merton are actually pretty flush for DEF's and FWD's, it's the midfield where they lack requisite potency and depth. On the other hand though temporary list manager Chris has made a name for himself in the ORFFA for stocking up on the positional bookends so it's not all THAT surprising if one was to have more than the slightest peruse of his player management record.

- Petracca was actually less of a shock at 2 given POP had cleared the decks of its FWD's over the last 6ish months and Christian is a player who could occupy a Gen FWD spot for years to come and do QUITE well at it. If the ball gets down there. And he's on the park.

- De Goey wasn't a shock at all because a) Because Fez is a mad Collingwood fan and b) when giving Fez a hand drafting he responded to my suggestion of Heeney with a 'who the fuck's Heeney?'.

- Heeney. Probably the best player in the draft. Good, safe pick. 'Nuff said.

- Brayshaw. Could have gone Martin but Jimcumbilly, a flag fancy in their debut year, have finally bit the bullet and come to the realisation that they're not in contention any more. Another good, safe pick in the square headed Angus.

- Lever. Honestly a bit of a surprise, not because TLP don't need DEF's (oh they surely do), but because drafts of ORFFL past have been littered with the likes of Plowman, Thurlow and the 'Berg going in the early rounds. Hope it works out well for both club and player.

- Nakia Cockatoo. Big shock. SBS has one of the best and deepest midfields in the comp and they sprang for another. Clearly a little bit of draft love for the inside midfielder with explosive steps out of the contest. Not a bad pick on talent, just a surprising list management decision.

- Stef Martin. Given what had come before in the draft and what MIL had been through in the past few years in the RUC position (Smith's injuries, Dawson's being a R1 pick and then injuries, Gorringe's dickheadishness) this was an eminently sensible pick. Kudos. Hope he plays R1 for you.

- Paul Ahern. Thought the PBR could go a MID given they're a bit short (and that was before Libba's knee), but I think the PBR have picked a rookie FWD in R1 of every draft they've participated in. So, going to type here.

- Jedi Anderson. Classy, classy pick. Need a MID, get a great one with a couple of years development at the best AFL club in the land. And they made P_L cry smiley tears in the process. I call that a win-win (in that they have won twice).

- Paddy McCartin. Hard to believe he was still on the board. Rookie key FWD's have an interesting currency in the ORFFL, but at P10 he was simply too good to pass up. Particularly with a FWD line like the one WAR are trotting out. Solid, solid pick.

- Darcy Moore. It's true Lucas, the kid wasn't on my shortlist. At least at HDH he'll have a coach that will give him time out of the first XV (see Menzel, Daniel)

- Peter Wright. Quite a slider but a no-brainer for a team that has an injured and soon to be delists Robert Warnock as its sole RUC (I don't count Hampson as a footballer).

- Jack Steele. No surprise here. Had a TMitch type average last year (inb4NEAFL) and I'm always keen to add players with two first names to my list.

- Hugh Goddard. Even though Johnny keeps his cards close to his chest, I was genuinely bemused by this selection. Sure he needs DEF's, but does the coach have the patience to develop a 18yo Key DEF?

- Liam Duggan. Personally I think the kid is a Nick Suban clone, but clearly at least one AFL club and one ORFFL club rate him. So yanno, good luck to the guy.

- Sam Fisher. Did not expect POO to go against their drafting history and pick an ageing DEF with err, hard-hitting off field proclivities. But he should score quite well when he's on the park in a great area to accumulate points.

Hey Stripey, sounds good mate. Send us a PM with your email and I can send you over a spreadsheet with the team currently in receivership's list. Have a look over and see what you think (be warned there is a fair amount of Richmond influence there currently).

Nice rundown Hornsy!

I guess the logic behind my pick of McGovern was the need for another decent defender given my delisting of a couple and Newman's age. The fact he is a forward and can play there, thus releasing Martin to the midfield, was another consideration.

Similar logic behind the Laverde pick - dual position, versatility and not a Richmond player.

Picking players that can allow others to end up playing midfield is one aim. Picking guys who can play in multiple positions is another.

Hopefully there are some midfielders left for my next few picks.

If I had a clear whack at anyone in the draft, Heeney would be my pick - agree with your assessment of him Hornsy. I have pick 3 in the ORFFA draft and he is coming under serious consideration there I have to admit if he is still there.

Quite an interesting take on the first round. I prefer to take the best ready-made talent in the first round compared to what's best for list management. The shortlist for my first pick was Petracca(even with his injury), Heeney and then Cockatoo. Cockatoo may be listed as a MID but he is a classic F/M type player, plus he doesn't mind a good don't argue - he reminds me of a certain gun Tiger.

Had McGovern on my list in the top 3 for pretty much similar reasons Chris, so when you snapped him up and Heeney was still available then the selection was clear cut for me.

But I must say, there'll be limited chance for you to grab Heeney in ORFFA now that you've declared your intentions in here :)

Good take on the selections H, wouldn't mind seeing you continue this as we go on through the draft - 17 done, only need to put he Hornsy spin on another 91 :)

Ah, but I could be just saying this to lead my ORFFA brethren astray as well .....

It'll be interesting though in ORFFA, given my better half (Jen - Lovely Banks Lilacs) has pick 1 for her team and I have pick 3.

At least at pick 3 there's a few plan B's in place as well.

But Heeney is a jet, most certainly.

Endeavouring to reduce that overt Richmond presence a little during the draft period.

But there's still plenty of yellow and black to work with (or get rid of) for future years.

Honest and to the point as always H. I prefer to compare Lever to Jake Stringer. Final year of TAC wrecked by injury, but all the talent in the world. Will take a while to develop, but the TLP list won't be at its best for a couple of years anyway. No love for Jaksch and Docherty? :)

Good assessment H.

Somewhat surprised the top ruck prospect made it to my pick, but agree it was a no-brainer to pick him when he did.

Also, Hampson no longer on the Quolls list
