New to this site. Been searching around the net seeing if there exist any aussie rules fantasy footy league that is new and exciting. Must say this post caught my eye as a great idea. How did you go with this concept ? <blockquote> "I think the concept of fantasy could take an even better turn if the draft was combined with positions into which anyone could be placed with no restrictions, however each position has a different scoring system. In other words, sure you can put Travis Cloke as a small defender, but unless he gets some rebound 50s, some running bounces, and clean possessions (all unlikely for big Trav) then he'd score zero. However, if we are looking for a key position forward role, which involves marks inside 50, contested marks and goals, then he gets the 100 points you seek. And for a goal sneak he might get 35, or a ruckman 40, depending on the points allocated for each position. It's my "moneyball" (for want of a better word) concept that I'm tinkering on with Walesy behind the scenes. Moneyball in that you can just assess the team as a whole bunch of players "doing their roles", so let's assess the best players per role. In short, we will try to get from CD as many stats as we can afford, and then apply them to different positions/roles on the ground. I guess what I get annoyed about in the CD way of ranking players is that true champions of the game like Scarlett will almost never get 100 where in most games he probably should. So why not develop a scoring system for positions on the ground? This gives a coach flexibility in where he will deploy players. It might be that his tagger got injured last week, and he needs to fill in with another player - possibly one of your better ball winners etc - that's part of the game. How it works, well the proof of any pudding is the eating so I'll get to trialling something hopefully when we confirm the stats we can use. I'm particularly hoping I can get the player v opponent differential stats. In other words I can tell how many goals were kicked on defenders, how many goal assists their opponent let through that sort of thing. Would make the rankings more meaningful. Positions at the moment: Rebound small defender (2) Lock down defender (2) Tall defender (2) Tagger/Shut down midfielder (2) Contested ball midfielder (3) Outside midfielder (3) Ruckman (2) Tall forward (2) Small pressure forward (2) Goal sneak (2) I like 10 position types being available. 3 in each area of the ground, and a ruckman."</blockquote>
Probably have to ask Lucas, ORFF. Karl and I and others disagree on player vs opp. differentials as an accurate indicator of player performance.
Yeah, I agree.. differentials stats not sure how accurate they are as a tool. Getting to see the Champion Data full plethora of stats is the problem but I like his general idea of defining new type of categories. Rather than having the basic defender, forward, ruck or midfielder categories if broke them up into more specialist roles. Something similar to what he suggested above would be good basis for a different version of fantasy footy Lets say 18 field spots line-up like this: Backfield Area Lock down defender, Key defender, Loose/Third Man up defender Rebounding defender, Key defender, Lock down defenders Midfield Area Outside midfielder, Inside midfielder, Outside midfielder 1st Ruck, Stoppage specialist, Run with midfielder Forward Area Goal sneak forward, Key Forward, Pressure Acts/Assist Forward Tall Forward/2nd ruck, Key Forward, Goal sneak forward Bench 4 interchange spots for Outside midfielders, Run with midfielder and 2 others of choice for roles they can interchange with of the 18 field spots
Certainly something to explore, but yeah the full plethora of stats from CD cost a full plethora of cash.
Well really, it was Carlton CEO Greg Swann's question to the media yesterday. Call him names if you must.
Would someone be so kind as to detail lockout details please? I assume week one is a partial (time?) and then at some time on Friday there is full lockout?
Usually we do a full lockout on Friday night once the game starts. I think that's the case for all weeks yeah?
Yeah, no rolling lockout but weeks that start with mid-week game have a rolling lockout, so you can loophole but you must have a player, not a blank spot if you want to take advantage of emergency's score.
