ORRFA Round 8 Review – Muso round

A few close games this round and plenty of happy punters entertained by a variety of music acts. Let’s see how things went. Apologies for what follows but time is absolutely kicking me in the grapes at the moment.

Charlies Opening Spelunkers 1334 def Venus Bay Vultures 1323
So apparently the disco bikkies worked with Toby a late out for Vultures. Thankfully it had no impact in what was a thrilling contest as Shiels knocked out 107 in his place. With quality scores all over the park, the Bont and Andy Brayshaw’s big tons that were the difference for the cave dwellers.

Wagga Wagga Wombats 978 def by Nareewillock Nuffers 1360
Nuffers by name but no longer by nature as Chris’ boys cruised past the Wombats. The Nuffers have already eclipsed last season’s win tally and we’re yet to hit the half-way point of the season. Young Samson Ryan scored possibly his first ever SC ton, while Cumberland absolutely stunk the joint up with -12. Rough week for the Wombats across the board but all is not lost as they still sit 4-4 with plenty of time to move up the ladder.

Waikikamoocow Incorrigibles 1293 def by Mount Beauty Uglies 1305
The Uglies get the Cows in a nailbiter. Some great performances on both sides with Dunkley and O’Brien doing their best to get the Cows over the line but their efforts weren’t quite enough against Gawn, Butters, Petracca and co. This result expanded the mid table log jam as both teams now find themselves at 4-4.

Whitsunday Warriors 1118 def by Marble Bar Misfits 1164
In the third of this week’s close games, I suspect the result was secondary, a friendship was toasted and good times were remembered. Football-wise, the result saw Len’s 14 man Misfits get the chocolates against his old mate’s Warriors. The Misfits are having a sneaky good season at 6-2.

Wineglass Bay Packers 1044 def by Lovely Banks Lilacs 1268
The Lilacs take a comfortable win over the Packers and double their win tally for the year. Four tons to one was probably the story and half a ruck didn’t help the Packers cause. It’s been a bumpy start to the year for both of these teams, and I’m sure Jen was delighted to see the Lilacs post a healthy score.

Birdsville Battlers 1199 def Larrikin Lagoon Lefties 1062
A win’s a win but not too much to celebrate at Birdsville. 4-4 isn’t the worst place to be but still too many issues to be competitive for now. For the Lefties, plenty to like about Anderson’s monster game, but beyond he and Jones, it was just one of those weekends to forget for the ‘Goon supporters. Culley’s knee was a clear lowlight.

Cradle Mountain Devils 1217 def Iron Knob Codpieces 929
A solid but not spectacular effort from the Devils (by their lofty standards at least) sees them tick off another win and move a game clear of the mid-table madness. The dual ruck set up of English and Marshall were among the Devils best. The Codpieces, on the other hand, made sure they did their chances of winning the Harley Reid Stakes no harm with a comfortable loss.

Dunsborough Dung Beetles 1040 def by Gundagai Grasshoppers 1351
No surprises here with the Hoppers just doing Hoppers things really. Cripps, Neale and Grundy were all well below their best, but the Hoppers still knocked out a lazy 1350 score to keep their undefeated start to the season going. Who said life is tough at the top? The Dung Beetles got a strong showing from Green (135) and some support from Sheed (didn’t give us too many tons at the Battlers though, you [content redacted]) but there wasn’t a lot more to write home about after that.

Foul Bay Chickens 1378 def Gariwerd Cockatoos 1157
Possibly looking to rename themselves as the Foul Bay Kangas with five North players taking the park on the weekend. Seven tons led by a massive 179 from Ziebell proved too much for the Cockies. We keep hearing about a rebuild from the folks at Foul Bay but they’re humming along nicely in second on the ladder. The defending champs were ok but found it a bit too hard against the Chooks this week. Big Sammy Draper was their best and the midfield effort was good. Another to find themselves in the mid-table jam.

So that's it for round 8. A few tasty games to look forward to in round 9, including a top of the table clash between the Hoppers and the Chooks. Might be a rough week in the Misfits/Packers household though.

    Excellent stuff @JC. Thanks.

As for the Nuffers, this is all a bit of a surprise. Most successful year win-wise since 2016, and the prudent drafting and recruiting carried out by @TheTassieHawk is starting to bear fruit.

    Great write up @JC

The ladder is certainly interesting, doing early season bolsters and some who will come rattling home once their injury list clears up

content redacted on Dom Sheed made me laugh

@chris88 no doubt the Nuffers had a huge turnover during my “burn it to the ground” tenure but the term prudent is much too kind allowing for a few fortunate successes amongst the many accompanying misses.
